Play Ball!

Another of my very short stories. BTW, a Little League game is 6 innings.

Will Darcy had always loved baseball. His late father had instilled it in him and his late mother tolerated it.

And now here he was, in the international championship game of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with tens of thousands in attendance, Head Coach Darcy.

First base coach Richard Fitzwilliam stood at his post, as well as third base coach Stewart Hurst. Michael Fitzwilliam was on second base after Ian Hurst's strategic bunt towards first moved Michael to second. There were two outs.

The score was 3-3, bottom of the sixth, and if the score stayed that way it would go into extra innings.

Alexander Darcy was at the plate, 12 years old, sporting his father's looks and his mother's temperament.

In the stands were Elizabeth and his two daughters, surrounded by Louisa Hurst and her other son, Richard's wife Clara (to this day too good for him), Uncle Robert Fitzwilliam the social butterfly, Aunt Marianne Fitzwilliam, an even worse social butterfly, Aunt Catherine DeBourgh who should have been an intelligence agent, Georgiana the softball superstar, and a ridiculous number of Bennets. He was amazed the head umpire hadn't ejected Mrs. Bennet by now. Cousin Anne and various other Fitzwilliams were watching at home.

At 2 balls and 2 strikes a low-hanging fastball came over the plate.

    *CRACK*

    No doubt.

    Victory.

While racing to embrace his son, Will was astounded that his mother-in-law could be that loud.

    The End
