Her Ladyship

Caroline's maid Marie sent her mistress another furtive glance. What was wrong with Miss Bingley she wondered. She had ordered her to come to her room to start preparing her for tonight's ball at Lady Hart-Hamilton's three hours before she was to be there. Marie knew how important this invitation was, Lady Hart-Hamilton's parties were the most important of the season and to be asked would give her a raise in the eyes of all the best of society. She had heard her and Mrs Hurst speaking of their good fortune in receiving this invitation. Mrs Hurst said that they would never have been invited if not for their new connection to the Bennetts through the marriage of their brother to Jane Bennett. Miss Bingley had angrily answered that she refused to acknowledge the truth of this. Miss Bingley hated the Bennetts beyond reason, in Marie's opinion. Marie liked Mrs Bingley very much, she was always so kind even when Miss Bingley wasn't.

Mrs Hurst liked her too and the sisters had many arguments about it. Miss Bingley seemed to resent the time her sister spent with her brother's wife. She seemed to be jealous of their ever growing friendship and their enjoyment of their baby sons. She accused Mrs Hurst of abandoning her in favor of Mrs Bingley all because of their children. Miss Bingley couldn't see why her sister couldn't leave her son to the nurse and go calling and shopping with her as they had always done. It was an ongoing disagreement between them. She especially resented the closeness which had taken place between the Hurst's since the birth of young Robert.

There had been a very large and very loud and angry argument between Miss Bingley and her brother when he found out that she had ordered three dresses and all the trimmings for this ball. He had shouted at her that she was getting out of hand and had informed her that she would be disallowed to get anymore clothes for the rest of the season and gone to all the shops that she went to and informed them that she was cut off for three month's and he would pay them for nothing she might order in that time. Miss Bingley was furious and screamed at him all the way out the door using words that were not to be used by a lady.

Marie looked again at her mistress. Miss Bingley was acting very strangely for her. She usually was shouting and throwing things about at a time like this. Nothing was ever right and she changed her mind about everything over and over again. She would change clothes at least three times, her hairstyle was wrong and had to be changed as often as the dress. Her makeup Marie never did until everything else was settled upon. she usually went through that and threw most of it about before she made up her mind.

She threw things about but never threw anything at Marie. Sher had lost her best maid Annette to Mr Darcy when she hit her and threw a heavy silver mirror at her in a tantrum. When Annette ran from the room to escape her rage she had run into Mr Darcy in the hallway. He was so angry when he saw the blood on her face that he hired her on the spot for his new wife and taken her to her home immediatly.

Miss Bingley was left without a maid on her brothers wedding day and Mr Bingley had made her use one of the maids at Netherfield Hall, who was just learning the trade. Miss Bingley was most upset but there was nothing she could do until she got to town. She had gone through four maids in four months until Marie was sent to her. Marie was Annette's sister and had been trained by her. When her brother brought her to his sister he told her all and also told her that if she ever laid a hand on her or threw anything at her she would at once come to him and he would find her another place. Miss Bingley agreed because she knew that if she had been trained by Annette she would be very good.

Marie decided that she must do something because her mistress had been just sitting there for almost an hour just staring ahead saying nothing instead if her usual snapping orders and changing them a minute later. "Has madam made up her mind on her dress, she asked, will it be the orange with the gold lace , or the puce or perhaps the olive green?

Caroline looked at her blankly for a moment before saying, "I did not sleep well last night Marie, perhaps I shall rest, come back in an hour."

Caroline got up and moved to the window, tonight would be the first time she would see the Darcy's since their marriage, she was not looking forward to it but she must go tonight or she would be shunned by society forever. She couldn't have that. She was determined to marry a title, nothing less than a Viscount. She had to find someone high enough . She must be her ladyship so that they would all be below her. She hated all of them, especially the Darcys. How she would enjoy that. She was so tired of hearing how wonderful Miss Eliza was, what a great hostess she was and how proud he was of her and how much they were in love.

They had been married a year and she had managed to avoid any contact with them, going to Bath, Sandition, Kent, Stratford and other places just to avoid meeting up with them even though it seemed they spent most of their time at Pemberley. Pemberley, she sighed, Pemberley, it should be me entertaing there not that witch Eliza Bennett.

They have been married a year, she thought. Jane and Charles have been married the same and are so happy to have a son.

She whirled from the window and went to ring for her maid with a smile on her face.

Jane and Charles have a son, even Louisa and Hurst heave a son, but the Darcy's have no child after a year and there is no sign that there is one on the way. Could it be possible that Lady Catherine was right, that the marriage was cursed and Miss Eliza was barren.

She clapped her hands and did a little dance. "What a great joke that will be on Mr Darcy ,she laughed, no children, I must get ready for this ball, she chortled. I think I shall have a good time after all I just have to pick the time to remind him that everyone seems to be parents but them."

"Marie, she laughed as her maid entered, it is time to prepare me for the ball, come, come Marie I must look the best I have ever looked in my life, we will wear the orange with the gold lace.

    The End
