A Stupid Bet

    Chapter One

Posted on Friday, 18 January 2002

This story was inspired in part by She's All That and by Magdalen's story, Never Let You Go, where she calls a band Will Darcy and the Pemberleys. Here goes with the first two chapters. Tell me what you think!

"Elizabeth! The phone is for you. It's Juliet Berrier," I heard my roommate, Charles Bingley yell from downstairs. I gave up my search for a moment and ran to my night stand for the phone.

    "Hello?" I asked annoyed.

"Bad time?" Came the reply. I sighed.

"No Julie...I just can't find my new leather tube top I want to wear to work. Its my first day...and I wanted to look good." I said looking around in my closet for it.

"I'm sure you'll find it...speaking of work...I have to finish getting ready...I'm still picking you up right?"

"Yeah...Thank you...see you in a few." I said and hung up. "Now where is it. . ."

I looked on my chair by my desk and discovered it under a pile of clothes I didn't hang up after washing them. I took the tube top and the matching leather pants from my bed and put them on. I then took the towel from my head so I could comb out my long black hair. I decided to let it hang down and went to my mirror to put on some powder and mascara. I slipped on my shoes and looked myself over in the mirror. My lavender eyes were bright and not a pimple in sight. I smiled showing my pearly whites then headed downstairs with my purse to wait for Juliet.

"Elizabeth! You look very nice!" Charles said once he saw me.

"Too bad I can't say the same for you." I said and smiled sweetly.

"I'm wounded..." He pretended to fall to the floor putting his hands over his heart.

"You're crazy." I said and laughed. I heard the doorbell ring but Charles beat me to it.

"Well hello there, Juliet. You're looking fine today." He said when he opened the door.

Juliet was wearing a blue halter top that matched her eyes and black pants. She had her long blonde hair up in a pony tail and little make-up on.

"Thank you Charles. Come on Liz. We have to go or we'll be late!" She said pulling me out the door.

"Bye ladies...be good!" Charles yelled from the doorway as we got in the car. I laughed and waved back.

"I can't believe you're working at Tabu now...and a bartender no less!" Juliet said and laughed.

    "And why not?"

"I don't know...you just seem like such a good girl...always doing what your parents say...well at least in high school you did..."

"People change." I stated. She laughed.

"Well, I'm glad we are gonna be working together...you'll love it there...good tips too!"

"I hope your right...I need a car!" We both laughed at that.

"There it is...your new place of work...Tabu!" She said as she parked on the side of the club. It was in the middle of Downtown Orlando. It was only 5:00 right now so it wasn't busy. I walked with Julie to the front door and the continued on through the club.

"Come on...you have to meet the owner...he is so cool!" Juliet said and grabbed my hand while leading me to the bar where a man with a pony tail of dark, curly hair was sitting with his back to us.

"Mr. DeBourgh this is your new bartender Elizabeth...Elizabeth...this is Mr. DeBourgh your new boss!" Juliet said in a chipper voice.

"Hello Mr. DeBourgh...nice to meet you." I said shaking his hand.

"Call me Rich, Elizabeth and what did I tell you Juliet?"

"Sorry Rich." She answered with a laugh. He smiled and said he would see us later. I let Juliet show me around the club before we went on our shift. The last stop she led me to the back room where some of the girls changed. There were some lockers, a couch and a table with chairs. I picked out a locker and put my purse in it then she introduced me to some of the girls.

"This is Mary and Lisa...they sit on those swings I showed you. Debra, Zoe and Megan are waitresses." I smiled at everybody and said Hello. I went back out with Julie because we had to start work. It was slow for the first few hours then by 8, people started to come. It was mostly older people who wanted to get here before the crowds but I didn't complain because they gave good tips.

By 11 it was full of people my age so I was busy with mixing drinks and trying to get the guys to lay off the flirting. When it was past 2 it started to die down.

"Oh thank god!" I said as I collapsed on a stool behind the bar. There were only a couple of people left who were headed for the door.

"How was your first night?" Julie asked me after she stopped laughing.

"It was great! I got a lot of tips...but I need sleep...how can you do this every night?"

"You get used to it...and your not off till 3...so don't get too comfortable." I groaned and stood back up. Just then 4 guys walked in with Rich from his office.

"Elizabeth...I'd like you to meet Will, George, Jack and Alec." He said pointing to each one.

"Hi." I said then smiled. "Would you guys like some drinks?"

"Yeah...can I get a screwdriver?" The one who was Jack asked.

    "No problem...anyone else?"

    "Umm...just a coke." Alec said.

"Sidecar, baby!" George said. I laughed and gave them their drinks. They thanked me and walked away.

"I'd like a Killer." I heard a deep, raspy voice ask. I looked at him and saw it was Will. I grinned and turned around to get his drink.

"Nice tattoo." He told me. He was referring to my rose on my right shoulder.

"Thank you." I said smiling, setting down his drink. He took a sip.

    "This is good..."

Will looked at me with a grin on his face. When I laughed he got up and went back to Rich's office with his drink.

"Rich...the new bartender is hot!" Will said as he dropped into a chair.

"Yeah...I agree with Will...whoa!" George said then took a sip of his Sidecar.

"Yeah...she is cute...but she is my bartender...she works for me!" Rich said with a laugh.

"I bet I can get her to go out with me..." Will thought aloud.

"Yeah right! I bet I can get her before you can!" George stated.

"You're on man!" Will said and gulped the rest of his drink.

"This isn't such a good idea..." Jack said softly.

"Yeah...you guys...someone is just going to get hurt." Alec chipped in, but by now Will and George were discussing the terms of the bet and didn't hear the warnings.

"Are you ready to go Liz?" Juliet asked as she closed up the register.

"Yeah...the sooner the better...I'm about ready to drop!" I exclaimed. She just laughed and went to go get her purse.

I got up to follow but a voice stopped me. "Leaving so soon?" I turned around and saw the tall, blonde one at the bar.

"Did you want another drink?" I asked him.

"Nah...I'm good." He said and then smiled.

"Well...George right?" At his nod I continued. "It was nice meeting you. I'm dead tired, I need to go home and sleep. I'll see you around."

"Do you need a ride?" He asked me.

"Nope...My friend is gonna drop me off. Thank you anyway." I said with a smile and turned to go.

"Bye Elizabeth." He said softly. I turned around one last time and said "Bye".

"Well...two of the owners friends in one night...I'm impressed!" Juliet said after I told her what happened. We were driving to my house and were at a red light.

"We were just talking..." I replied.

"Uh huh..." Was all she said. We pulled into my driveway and I thanked her for the ride.

"No problem...I'll see you later!" She said then drove off. I unlocked the door and stepped inside. I saw that Charles was in the living room and said goodnight to him and headed up to my room.

    Chapter Two

"You need some new clothes girl!" It was Sunday and Juliet was begging me to go the mall with her.

"Fine...but when I am dead broke, its you who I come after for money!" I said finishing up with my hair and walked downs so we could leave.

"Where are you going?" Charles asked as we headed for the door.

"The mall." I said getting my purse.

"That's nice...I'll just stay here all by myself...watching boring weekend TV." He said and plopped on the couch.

I looked at Juliet and she frowned. "All right...You can come...But you can't wear that...Go change! We'll be in the car." She said with a sigh.

He saluted her and ran up to his room. We walked to her car and got in.

"Air...give me air!" I said turning up the air conditioning.

"Well give me some music!" Julie replied laughing. She turned up the music and changed the station until she found one of her favorite songs. "I love this song!" She said referring to "Sometimes it be that way" by Jewel. I laughed at her loud singing.

"It's nice of you to join us. " I told Charles as he got into the back seat. All I got from him was him sticking out is tongue at me. I was relieved when we finally got to the mall. With Juliet's singing and Charles thinking he was a drummer on the back of my seat, I was ready to kill them.

"Where are we going?" I asked as we walked into the food court.

    "Umm...Body Shop first...then on to 5 7 9." Juliet said.

"Oh yippee..." Charles said under his breath.

"You're the one who wanted to come." I said putting my arm around his waist.

"It's not everyday I get to hang with two beautiful girls like you." He said grinning.

"Well aren't you being nice..." Juliet said.

"It's the truth." He stated putting his arms around us both heading to Body Shop.

"How about this?" Julie asked me holding up a light pink tube top like dress.

I squealed. "Gimme!" I said running to her. She just laughed and gave it to me. We looked around some more and I ended up getting 5 shirts, 2 dresses, 3 skirts and 4 pairs of pants.

"I'm gonna be broke if I keep spending money like this!" I said as we headed back to the food court. I gave some of my bags to Charles and he just laughed saying That's what he was good for.

"Me need food!" He said as we went by McDonald's. We sat down with our food and ate.

"Well...Looks like its my lucky day bumping into you here!" I heard the familiar, raspy voice say which I heard often during the past week. I looked up and saw that I was right. I smiled.

    Hey Will." I said.

"Hey Liz." He said pulling a chair to our table.

"Oh...Will...this is Charles, my roommate and you know Juliet."

    "Hey." He said then smiled.

"Seems like you've been shopping a while." I said looking at his bags.

"Nope...not that long...I'm gonna head back to the stores...you wanna come with?" He asked me.

"Umm...sure...as long as you give me a ride back home."

    "No problem!" He stated grinning.

"OK...Julie...Thank you for bringing me...I'll call you later!" I said as I got up with all of my bags.

I went around and kissed Charles on the cheek then turned to leave. I heard a faint "You go girly!" as I walked with Will who slipped his arm around my shoulders.

"Did you go out with Charles before?" Will asked me as I was looking for some shirts for him.

    "No, why?"

"When I asked you to come with me he just seemed a little jealous...that's all." He said looking at me.

"Oh...he's just very protective of me...I've known him since middle school!" I replied laughing.

"Oh Ok..." He said trying to hide a smile. I noticed and grinned.

"What if I was going out with him?" Will stopped smiling and looked very serious.

"Then I would have to steal you from him." He told me.

"And what makes you think you could do that?" I said putting my hands on my hips.

"Because I'm Will Darcy...didn't you know?" He said laughing, coming closer to me.

"Someone has their head up their ---." I said and he roared with laughter.

"You're a trip." He said leading me to the cash register then out the door.

"Thank you for coming with me, I had a great time...I should take you with me all the time!" Will said as he parked in front of my house.

I laughed. "I had fun...I wouldn't mind doing it again..." I said staring into his eyes.

There was a moment when all we did was look into each other's eyes. I snapped out of it and kissed him on the cheek then opened the door and got out.

"Are you coming to the club tomorrow night?" I asked him as I leaned down by his window.

He nodded and I grinned. "Good." I said then left him there smiling and went inside.

"Don't you guys ever go home?" Will asked as he went into his house to find the rest of the guys sitting in the family room eating and watching TV.

"Yeah...sometimes..." Alec replied. Will got a soda in the kitchen then came back out and sat by George on the couch.

"Where have you been?" Rich asked him noticing he was smiling while staring into space.

"I just got back from the mall with Elizabeth."

"What!?" George yelped looking at him. Will grinned.

"Chill...I didn't kiss her...yet...get that money ready though!" Will said and laughed at George's face.

"I don't think so man. No one can resist the Wickham charm." George replied smiling.

That got everyone laughing. "Oh Yeah...I'm so sure Geode Boy." Alec said still laughing.

    "They can't!" George said whining.

"She found out we are in the group...Some girls came up to me in the mall." Will said when everybody calmed down.

"What was her reaction?" Jack asked.

"She was cool with it." Will replied.

"Good." Rich said. He didn't want their to be a problem at the club.

"She finally returns." Charles said when Elizabeth went into the living room.

"Miss me?" She said putting her bags on the couch then sitting in a chair.

"You know it! Juliet called an hour ago." He replied looking at her.

"OK...Thank you...I got to go put my clothes away...Night!" She told him then blew him a kiss and left the room heading for the stairs to go to her room to call Juliet and tell her about Will.

"Are you thirsty or did you come to keep me company?" Elizabeth asked George as he sat down on a stool.

It was Monday night and very slow. "Both?" He replied with a smile.

Elizabeth laughed. "What do you want to drink?" She asked.

    "Pepsi." He told her.

"Since it's a slow night Rich said he is gonna close up early...what are you gonna do when you get off?"

"Probably just go home and read...boring huh?" She replied.

"Why don't you come over my house and we'll rent videos or something?"

"Sure...is the group coming or just us?" She asked him.

George blushed a light shade. "Just us."

"OK...count me in." She said then went over to get a customer another beer.

While George was waiting for Elizabeth to get off work he went back into the office to talk to Rich. "What you doing?" He asked as he plopped into a chair.

"Nothing really...what do you want?" Rich said.

"I just wanted to let you know that Elizabeth is coming over to my house tonight...Looks like I might win that bet after all!" He replied with a grin.

"I don't know why you guys are set on winning this bet...its wrong man."

"I am doing this to prove to Will that not all girls want him."

"But to make a bet to see who kisses her first? Ok...whatever...I'm not in this." Rich stated.

"Yeah...I know." Elizabeth closed the register and got her purse then went in search of George. She walked back to the office just as George was coming out.

"Ready?" George asked holding out his arm.

"You bet." She replied hooking her arm with his.

    Chapter Three

Posted on Sunday, 20 January 2002

"What movie do you wanna get?" George asked as they were looking at all the shelves of movies.

Elizabeth bent down to look at the movies. "Umm...How about Candy Man?" She asked looking up at him.

"In a mood for scary movies are we?"

"You know it!" She said and picked out Halloween H2O.

"Oh my goodness! Look at all those bees!" Elizabeth yelped as the Candy Man was covered with them. Just then the doorbell rang.

"I'll be right back." George said and headed to the door to open it.

"George my man! Hey!" Will said as he stepped inside.

"I'm watching some movies...why are you here?" George said as he closed the door.

"Bored...nothin better to do." Will said as he headed for the kitchen to get a soda.

"Well...can't you think of something?" George said as he grabbed Will and pulled him back to the door.

He heard a scream and Will looked at him. "My my...Do we have company? Of the female persuasion?" Will said as he headed to where he heard the scream. He found a girl hiding her head behind a pillow.

He cleared his throat. "Hey Will." She said when she saw who it was.

"Oh...Hey Liz...I didn't know you were here...I guess I should go." He said and stood up from the chair.

"Are you sure? We have Halloween..." She said lifting her eyebrows up and down.

He laughed. "If its cool with George." He said then looked at George who had a slight scowl on his face.

"Yeah sure." He said then went into the kitchen. Will took this opportunity to sit by Elizabeth. George saw this when he came back and plopped on the chair and sulked throughout the movie.

"Hey Liz...wake up." Will said as he gently shook her. She had her head on Will's shoulder.

"Umm...oops...guess I missed the movie?" She said as she sat up.

"Yup...Looks that way. Do you need a ride home?" He asked as he looked at his watch. It read 4:00. She looked at George who was asleep on the chair and said yes.

She got up and wrote him a quick note telling him Will gave her a ride home and to thank him for inviting her over. She got her purse and followed Will out of the house to his car.

"I don't really wanna go home...do you think we could go somewhere else?" She asked.

    "Sure...I know just the place."

"Close your eyes." Will said as he turned a corner.

Elizabeth did as he said and closed her eyes. After a few more turns Will stopped and turned off the car.

"Can I look now?" She asked.

"Nope." He went around and got her out of the car and took her hand. He walked for a few moments then said she could look.

"Oh...I love it!" Elizabeth said referring to the beach under moonlight. She jumped on Will and gave him a hug. He laughed and pulled her hand to walk with him. "So...Tell me about yourself."

"What would you like to know?" He asked in a teasing tone.

She just stopped and smiled at him. She then looked out at the ocean. Will sat down in the sand and she sat down in front of him, leaning back into his chest.

    "You cold?" He asked.

"No..." She said but shivered. He wrapped his arms around hers and put his head near her shoulder. They sat like that for a while in silence.

"What are your parents like?" She asked him.

"My mom is great...She's been with me through everything...I love her to death. Her and my dad divorced when I was a kid...I haven't really talked to him all that much since then." He ended softly.

"Really? I'm sorry...I know what its like..." She replied. "My dad died when I was 5...I still remember the way he looked that day...He was going to the store to buy some medicine for me because I had a cold and he couldn't stand it when I was sick. I remember he told me he would be right back..." Liz stopped and was quiet.

"Hey...it's OK...it's good to cry." Will told me and held me tighter while she cried.

"Look up." Will told me a while later. Liz looked up and saw the sun begin to rise. They sat in silence watching.

She turned around and looked into his eyes. She went in to kiss him and he gently pushed her away and stood up. She looked up at him with questioning eyes but he avoided looking at her. She stood up too and followed him to the car.

Will turned on the radio and drove in silence. "Thanks for the ride...and the beach." Liz said when he pulled up in her drive.

"No prob. I'll see ya later." He said and smiled. She smiled back.

"Bye." she said and shut to the car door and walked to my door.

"Hey...what's wrong with you tonight?" Rich asked Will later that night.

"Nothing..." He said and spotted George talking to Elizabeth at the bar. "I'll be back."

"Hey George...I gotta talk to you." He said when he got to the bar.

"Ok..." George said then Will dragged him away. Elizabeth looked at them with a strange look on her face.

"What?" George said looking at Elizabeth and smiled.

"I think we should call off this bet." Will stated quietly.

"What? Why?" George said now paying full attention to him.

"It's wrong. I don't wanna do that to her." He said and glanced in her direction.

"Afraid I might win?" George said with a sneer.

"Yeah...that's it..." Will said with a scowl.

"No way man...the bet is still on." George said and walked away before Will could respond.

"Damnit." He said under his breath and watched George flirting with her while she was pouring drinks. "Ughh! George is so...so..." Will said as he slammed down on Rich's chair in his office.

"What did he do this time?" He asked looking down at the paper on his desk.

"He won't call off the bet."

"Why do you wanna call it off?"

"Because..." Will said looking at the floor.

    "Because...?"

"I like her...a lot...and I don't want this to ruin anything, and it will if she finds out."

    "Oh." Rich stated.

"Just "oh."? You're my best friend...you need to help me! What am I supposed to do?"

"Why don't you just tell her? She'll be mad...but she won't hate you."

"No...I can't take that chance." Will said. "Last night she was gonna kiss me...But I didn't let her." He stood up.

"Where are you going?" Rich asked. "I'm gonna go see what she is doin after work..." Will replied then left.

"Hey Liz...What are you doing tonight?" Will asked her as he sat next to George on a stool.

"She's coming with me to the movies." George told him with a grin.

"You wanna hang out tomorrow Will? We could play a lil one on one." Elizabeth said looking at Will. "But if you're scared I'll beat you...we don't have to..."

"You're on woman!" He said and laughed because her smile got bigger.

George cleared his throat. "Elizabeth...I'll be in Rich's office if you need me." He said and got up.

"Is there something wrong with George? He's been acting weird lately." Elizabeth said when he was out of hearing range.

"George is always strange...don't mind him." He told her. A customer came up to the bar so Elizabeth smiled and went over to him. Will sat there drinking his beer for a while in silence.

"Hey Will." Alec said as he sat down.

    "Sup." Will answered.

"What can I get for you Alec?"

"Tonight I think I'm gonna be daring...so...Sprite!" He said in a deep country accent. Elizabeth got his drink and went on to other customers.

"So...what is with the George thing? I thought you liked Will." Juliet asked.

She was giving Elizabeth a ride home so she could get ready for her date with George.

"Will isn't interested." Elizabeth told her bluntly.

"Whoever told you that was lying girl...look at the way he looks at you!"

"I went to kiss him and he turned and walked away! He isn't interested but is too nice to come out and say it." She said sadly.

"I'll get to the bottom of this...and you really shouldn't go out with George if it isn't him you want to be with, Liz." Juliet replied.

"Yeah yeah...I know...I'll tell him tonight."

"Good." Juliet turned into Elizabeth's driveway.

"Charlie...I'm home!" Elizabeth yelled as she shut the front door.

"Why so early?" He asked from the living room.

"Got a date." She said then went up the stairs to get ready.
