Chapter 39
Jane was just what Georgie expected, sweet, motherly, and endearing. Georgie was immediately considered a part of the family and welcomed warmly by Jane. There was no doubt that Jane was the sweetest creature, confirming the accounts she heard of her from everyone at Pemberley. Georgie was completely satisfied with Jane.
But nothing could prepare Georgie for the lasting impression she received when she met Jane and Lizzy's parents. At first she would laugh when she heard different accounts of their parents. She thought Lizzy and Jane were over-exaggerating their parents, but a few weeks into her vacation a dinner was planned for Georgie to meet Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Lizzy promised that she would meet her younger sisters, but it would be later on.
First she had to meet the parents.
Lizzy was not terribly concerned with her father meeting Georgie, it was her mother that held all of her concern.
She was nervous at having to cease her mother's comments and actions while trying to hold a civil dinner at home.
Will was more than agreeable in making dinner, calming Lizzy's nerves a little. Georgie thought Lizzy was being quite silly and would laugh at her in turn as Lizzy tried to reassure her that Mrs. Bennet was a good woman, just a bit eccentric.
'I'm sure your mother is wonderful. How could she not be, having raised two wonderful and easygoing daughters such as you and Jane? I'm inclined to like her.'
Lizzy groaned.
'Just keep that in mind should she make any remarks to you that I can't catch.'
By the time seven o'clock came, Lizzy's parents arrived. Cursing under her breath to a non-present Jane, who had plans to have dinner with Louisa and Caroline, she opened the door, but not before letting out a deep breath.
'Lizzy!!'
'Mom. Come in-'
'Why look at what you've done with the place!' Mrs. Bennet cried when she barged past her daughter and into the house.
'And make yourself at home.' Lizzy finished to herself.
Looking away from her mother, she felt comfort in seeing her dad standing on the porch with a small smile on his face.
'Dad.' Lizzy said with relief.
'Hello, my dear. How are you?'
'I'm a box of nerves, but I'm much better with you here.'
Mr. Bennet graciously hugged his daughter, then moved into the house where both of them could hear Mrs. Bennet rattle on about how grand the house was.
Georgie was helping Will with the wine, and as soon as she had heard a the shrill voice of Mrs. Bennet, her eyes went wide along with the smile on her face.
Looking up at Will, he only rolled his eyes and leaned down to her ear.
'It only gets better from here.'
'Will! Oh there you are! Come here and give me a hug.' Mrs. Bennet cried when she saw him.
'Mrs. Bennet. It's been awhile. How are you?'
After tightly hugging him, Mrs. Bennet answered his question.
'Oh I'm quite fine. The ride up here was dreadful though. I must say that you have beautiful home here, but why not find one closer so that it's not to tiresome to visit. I would come more often if you lived closer.'
Georgie could only stifle a laugh when she saw Will's eyes grow big and heard him starting to stutter.
'Uh well, actually, as great an idea as that would be, I'm afraid I could never think about leaving this house. It's been in the family... quite some time.'
Georgie had to turn around to smile, knowing that Will was only making it up to get out of any idea Mrs. Bennet had of visiting more often.
'Oh well, I can understand that. It is a shame, but we will make do. Although it is much easier for you two to come and visit us. I'm sure you could come more often than not to-'
'Mrs. Bennet,' Will quickly began so not to hear her ramble on,' May I introduce my sister Georgiana to you.'
Georgie quickly turned around to look at Mrs. Bennet and smiled.
'Your sister? Oh, she is very pretty.'
'It's a pleasure to meet you ma'am.' Georgie said as she held out her hand.
'Oh the pleasure is all mine I assure you!'
'Georgie this is Mr. Bennet.'
Mr. Bennet smiled and took her hand to greet her.
'How are you enjoying your summer so far, Georgiana?'
'Oh please, call me Georgie. I'm enjoying it very well. Each day I am happier in what I see and do.'
Mr. Bennet smiled, understanding her underlying meaning and thankfully took the glass of wine Will handed him.
'Good... good. Well Will, how are things for you?'
Mr. Bennet and Will remained in the safety of the kitchen while Lizzy dragged her mother into the living room along with Georgie in tow.
'Well Lizzy, you did wonders with this place.'
'Mom, I didn't do anything. This is all Will. It was like this when I moved in.'
Mrs. Bennet sat down on the sofa with her glass of wine and looked sharply at her daughter.
'Oh! Well, now that I think of it, it's no surprise. You would let him make all the decisions wouldn't you? Just like with Eliot.'
Lizzy's eyes shot back to her mother's and she glared at her. A sharp comment was on the tip of her tongue when Georgie intercepted before her.
'Will enjoys decorating, and he can be quite particular. I know that Lizzy didn't change a thing with the place, because she has told me herself, that she is quite fond of it the way it is.'
'Really?' Mrs. Bennet wondered.
'I think Will did a wonderful job, Mom. I really can't picture the place in any other way.'
'Well, I wouldn't imagine so. But being that you are the woman of the house now, I'm sure you would add your own touch to things.'
'I can't imagine that I would. Only my chair has been added to the calm and cozy atmosphere Will has created.'
Mrs. Bennet looked at the recliner and then pursed her lips.
'Hmm...'
Georgie looked at Lizzy in wonder and then took a sip of her wine.
'Tell me Georgie, how old are you?'
'I'm 21.'
'Oh, I thought you a bit younger. My youngest daughters are quite mature for their ages of 17 and 15. I thought perhaps you would like to spend some of your summer with them.'
Lizzy's eyes went wide at the ridiculous comment of her younger sisters being mature.
'Mom, Georgie has many plans this summer and I-'
'Yes, of course you do, but I'm sure you could spend a week or two with them. They start school late in August and right now they are working at the local pool as lifeguards. They even have boyfriends. My second youngest has a nice boy, Carter, who spends his time at our house with Catherine, she's 17 you see, and they plan on going to college together this fall. Oh but my youngest, oh Lydia! She has met the nicest boy I've ever seen her with. Denny. They've known each other quite some time, but they are such a sweet couple; not as sweet as Jane and Charles, mind you, but just delightful. He takes her everywhere. It pains me not to see her as often as I like, but she's so happy and so-'
'Mom! Please...I think we understand what you're saying.'
'Do you? Do you Lizzy? I wonder, since you never see your younger sisters anymore. You would much prefer to work and be with Will, who don't get me wrong Georgie, is very handsome and very ri-'
'Mom! Please! Georgie, tell us about the rest of your plans this summer.' Lizzy said calmly.
Georgie shook her head. She couldn't believe how silly this woman sitting next to her was. She was torn between laughing or screaming. Smiling, Georgie looked at Mrs. Bennet and began with her plans. Lizzy shook her head and debated on whether or not she could get more wine before having to intercept another remark from her mother.
She decided to take the chance.
Meeting Will and her father in the kitchen, she poured herself another glass and cursed Jane to herself again for the millionth time that night.
'That bad, eh?' her father said with his hand on her shoulder.
'I love my mother, I really do; but I can't do this alone. Is dinner ready yet? Or can you just leave it for a while and rescue us out there?'
Will smiled and took her hand.
'We can eat now if you'd like.'
Lizzy smiled and nodded her head.
'I'll rescue Georgie.'
'No, let me.' Mr. Bennet said and walked over to the sofa.
'Come help me get the food on the table.' Will said as he handed her the plate of turkey he had finished carving.
Dinner was quite surprising to Lizzy. Her mother was so hungry and so in love with the food that she hardly spoke a few sentences during the whole meal.
This gave everyone a chance to relax and enjoy their dinner. Conversation was mild and calm between the other members.
Once dinner was done, Mrs. Bennet began again.
'Oh Will! That was simply heavenly! I'm so sorry Lizzy can't cook, but she never did want to learn, no matter how hard I pressed. She always wanted to be doing something with her father. Either reading, or helping around the house along with her brother Nick.'
'Mrs. Bennet, I have no qualms about Lizzy's cooking. She has made several meals for me that I quite enjoy.'
'Oh yes! She made the best French toast the other morning.' Georgie said in Lizzy's defence.
The smirk on Mr. Bennet's lips was evident to all but Mrs. Bennet.
Lizzy was used to the abuse her mother fixed upon her, and was so numb to it that she didn't even flinch when her mother had something to say against her.
'Well, I think she picked it up from Jane while they were living together. Jane is an excellent cook and will be a dutiful and stupendous wife to our dear Charles. I must say I adore that man; so attentive and so friendly.'
'My dear... I think we should go into the living room.' Mr. Bennet pushed back his chair while Will stood up and started to clean up.
'Let me. Please.' Lizzy said when she put her hand over his. Looking at her lovingly and understanding her feelings, Will nodded and kissed her on the forehead while he followed Mr. and Mrs. Bennet into the living room. Georgie stayed behind to help.
'Oh you don't need to help me. I'm fine on my own.'
'But I'd like to. I don't want you to feel upset because of tonight. I think your mother is a very...uh...vivid woman; but certainly she means well... Even though she might not show it as she should.'
Lizzy laughed bitterly.
'Yeah well, my mom shows her affection for people in very different manners and moods. I'm not as fortunate as Jane, yet I can consider myself fortunate at times.'
Georgie looked a bit confused and received a smile from Lizzy.
'I don't get as much attention and pressure from my mom as Jane and Lydia do. She pretty much ignores me or berates me. I'm so used to it, I don't even care what she says.'
'But, you were all jitters before.' Georgie stated as she wiped down the table.
'Oh well, I still am, but more so for what she will say to you or Will. Whatever she says to me or about me, I'm completely used to; so long as she doesn't disrespect you or your brother I'm okay.'
'Well let's join them. I'm curious to find out more about your dad.'
Lizzy's lips formed into a warm smile.
'Now he's someone to listen to; I think you'll like him quite a bit. Go on and join him. I'll be there in a minute.'
Georgie left Lizzy to her thoughts in the kitchen, but it wasn't for long since her mother saw her all alone and came over.
'Lizzy dear, why don't you show me the rest of the house.'
Lizzy didn't speak for a minute and looked behind her mom to see Georgie and Will in an animated conversation with her dad.
'They are talking about Kenya and I don't know much about it, and I'd much rather look at the rest of the house.'
Lizzy, thinking it would be a great opportunity for Will to get to know her dad and Georgie to actually enjoy the evening, conceded and took the duty of watching her mother while they chatted.
'Okay, come on. How about we start with the library?'
It was nearly two hours later when Lizzy returned to the living room with her mother in close tow, rambling on about the house and how wonderful Will's tastes were compared to Lizzy's.
Hearing Mrs. Bennet's voice from the hallway, Will turned to see Lizzy walk calmly into the room with her mother close behind.
'Would you like dessert? We were just about to go looking for you two.'
Lizzy smiled and nodded.
'I'll go get it.'
'I'll help.' Will said and followed Lizzy to the kitchen.
At this point, Lizzy wished the kitchen was enclosed and not open to the living room.
'Everything okay?' Will whispered close to Lizzy's ear as he reached for the coffee cups.
Lizzy nodded as she carefully cut the French silk pie Will had made earlier.
'You sure?'
Lizzy nodded again and started to smile.
'What's so funny?' Will asked as he tried to concentrate on the coffee. He was finding himself interested in what was making Lizzy smile so.
'My mother.'
Will said nothing and continued to fill the cups with coffee.
'She just can't get enough of your house.'
'Our house.'
Lizzy looked at Will.
'Well, she seems inclined to think it's yours and that I'm not to consider it my house until we're married. And with that said, she thinks we should be married straight away.' Lizzy said doing her best impression of her mother.
Will smiled and warmed at the idea, but it soon faded, knowing it was her mother saying that and not Lizzy.
'Well, all in good time, my love.' Will said and turned around with the tray of coffee, leaving Lizzy stopped from cutting the pie and watching him walk away.
The rest of the evening went better than expected for Lizzy. She was on the rocks the rest of the night, praying that her mom wouldn't bring up marriage to Will with Georgie there. She could handle it with just Will there, but anyone else around, and especially his sister, she didn't want that risk.
It was nearly eleven when her parents took off, leaving an open invitation for Georgie to come visit Kitty and Lydia, as well as have dinner with them anytime.
As the front door shut, Georgie skipped back to the living room behind Will, who went to the kitchen for a strong drink, and Lizzy who collapsed on the sofa.
'So, what did you think of Mrs. Bennet, Georgie?' Will asked as he poured brandy into a glass.
Georgie looked up at her brother and grinned.
'She's a treat! I never thought I'd ever meet a woman like that in my life.'
Lizzy groaned.
'I'm sorry, Lizzy; I know she's your mom-'
Lizzy put her hand up and smiled.
'I'm not offended, Sweetie. I'm glad you enjoyed her. She can be quite a show depending on the company.'
'Well she is a very... animated sort of person.'
Will sat down on an empty chair and smiled.
'I have to say that I really like your dad, Lizzy.'
Lizzy looked over and smiled.
'He is the one who has kept me sane my whole life. My mother means well, but I fear what will come out of her mouth next.'
Will started to chuckle, making Lizzy give him a look of surrender.
'Your mother reminds me of my aunt in a way.'
'Aunt Catherine??' Georgie asked with disbelief.
Will only took a sip of his brandy.
'I don't want to know.' Lizzy said as she stood up.
'I'm heading off to bed.' she said as she walked towards the stairs.
'I'll be along in a minute.' Will said and took another sip.
'I like her father.'
'Yes, he's a good man; reminds me a bit of Dad.'
Georgie pondered the thought and then shrugged.
'I just don't think I could handle her mother for my own. She made me nervous at times.'
'She's... I don't think I have a word to describe her; but I will say that you have to meet her to understand what Lizzy and Jane mean by an experience. That's the best word to describe her.'
Will stood up and patted his sister's head.
'Good night, Sweetheart.'
'Night Will.'
The next morning, Jane came over early to have breakfast with Lizzy and Georgie while Charles and Will went to play basketball.
Jane was quite curious as to the evening and Georgie's opinion. As soon as she arrived, she carried the bags of breakfast she had picked up on her way, and went to the door.
Georgie answered it brightly, happy to see Jane again.
'Good morning, Jane!'
Jane smiled and made her way inside.
'Morning, Georgie. So tell me. How did dinner go?'
Lizzy called from the kitchen when she heard Jane's voice.
'Peachy!'
Jane rolled her eyes and smiled as Georgie took a bag and went into the kitchen.
'I wasn't asking you. I want to hear it from Georgie.'
Georgie set down the bag and grinned.
'It was definitely an experience like both of you said it would be. I can't say you two were exaggerating about her, that's for sure!'
Jane and Lizzy shared a knowing look and started to unpack the bags.
'Was she always so...'
'High-strung?'
'Concerned? For lack of a word.' Lizzy and Jane said.
Georgie paused and then replied.
'Yeah...'
'Always. We learned quickly as we got older, that if we went along with her tirades, as we called them, then it would be easier to understand and deal with her.' Jane said as she took a hearty bite of her bagel sandwich.
'We've always respected her and did as she asked of us, so long as it wasn't anything too out of our norm, but she's just very... passionate about her family and her life.' Lizzy answered carefully.
'Hmm.' Georgie thought a little more on the events of last night.
'That's a bit understated there Lizzy. But how did the rest of the night go?'
'Oh I love your dad! We had a great conversation.'
Jane looked at Lizzy, amused, and then her face was full of confusion.
'Where was mom?'
Lizzy rolled her eyes.
'With me on a tour of the house; along with a lecture.'
Jane rolled her eyes as Lizzy took a bite of her breakfast.
'She gave you a lecture?' Georgie asked with wide eyes before taking a bite of her food.
Lizzy only nodded.
'What did she say?' Georgie asked surprised.
Lizzy finished her bite and then, after a drink of her milk, she smiled.
'She thinks the house is great and that Will has impeccable taste, but she won't consider this place mine until Will and I get married; and with that said, she thinks we need to get married right away.'
Jane's eyes went wide as Georgie's mouth dropped open.
Silence took over the open kitchen. Neither Jane nor Georgie could say anything or eat, while Lizzy continued to eat her breakfast.
Jane was the first to speak after the bombshell, looking at Georgie. 'Please don't think that our mom is greedy. She just wants the best for us, but she goes about it the wrong way.' She then turned to Lizzy.
'However,' she started looking pointedly at her sister,' It wouldn't surprise me if it were to happen in the future, if not the near future when you two are ready.'
Lizzy shrugged.
Georgie took a sip of her orange juice and then cleared her throat.
'I don't think your mom is like that. I mean, I have an aunt who is just awful at times with her opinions, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want the best for us. So I can understand. What did you say though?'
'I told her that we just moved in together and that at this point in time, we haven't really discussed marriage.'
'She didn't listen, did she?' Jane answered knowingly.
'She didn't listen.' Lizzy confirmed, 'But I was able to convince her that we would talk about it soon and hopefully come to some understanding.'
'Do you want to marry Will?' Georgie asked, with a little hesitation.
Lizzy knew that when she told the story of her mother's insistence on her marrying Will that Georgie would look for her brother's best interest, however, she knew how she felt with Will and how things would eventually work out.
She blushed as she smiled seeing both Jane and Georgie's faces light up.
'I do. I really do.'
Shrieks of giddy happiness elated from both of the girls along with Lizzy and they soon calmed down.
'I think you two are wonderful together.' Georgie said with a huge smile.
'When would you want to get married?' Jane asked as she cleaned up from her breakfast.
'Well I haven't really thought about that. We haven't even really talked about it to be honest. We just have this understanding that we will get married. I don't want it to be around everyone else's weddings.'
'Oh Lizzy!' Jane dismissed her sister's comment, receiving defense from her sister.
'I mean it! You're getting married soon; as well as Marianne. We have time. I'm not even engaged yet! We just moved in and we have things we need to clear up and find out about each other first. Once we've accomplished that, when the time is right, I'm sure Will will ask me and that will be it.'
Lizzy shrugged as she put her wrappers in the trash and washed her hands.
'Well, I'm satisfied with what I heard about last night. Georgie?' Jane turned around from the fridge and opened a bottle of water.
'Oh, I am, yes. I like your parents.'
Jane looked at Lizzy and lifted her eyebrows.
'Well, wait until you meet the rest of the crew; which reminds me Lizzy, Mom wants to have me set up a barbeque for them and invite Nick and the family.'
'Well that's a wonderful idea and all, but do we even know if Nick and Rachel are together still? I heard they were trying to work things out, but I haven't heard anything since.'
'I'll call Rachel over the weekend and see how things are. I don't want to press the issue, but I would like to give them an invite.'
Lizzy rolled her eyes are her sister's subjecting herself to their mother's idea.
Jane stayed the remainder of the morning and started to make lunch for everyone, as the guys would be returning shortly.
Lizzy and Georgie weren't allowed to help as they were making a mess with the cheese Jane had instructed them to grate and laughed the whole time they were trying to get it done.
Banned from the kitchen, the two women decided to take Jack outside and enjoy the outdoors. It was warm with a cool breeze that the two of them enjoyed.
'I love Jack. He's a great dog.'
'Thank you Georgie. He is the best dog I've ever had.'
'Will had a dog once.'
'Really?'
Georgie nodded and kneeled down to pet Jack.
'Will named him Wellington.'
'Hmm after the British General from Waterloo.'
'Actually no. From chewing up his wellies that he absolutely loved. He had to buy so many pairs just for the dog and himself that he named him Wellington. He loved that dog. But he died right after Will moved to America.'
Lizzy thought the story bittersweet.
'What type of breed was Wellington?' Lizzy asked.
'He was a Great Dane. Will loves Great Danes.'
'I can see him liking them. He hasn't had one since?'
Georgie shook her head.
'He's told me before how amusing he finds Jack and that he does like him a great deal. Made him miss Wellington a bit, but he told me that after you two settle in, maybe he could ask you about getting one.'
A sly smile played on Georgie's lips while she watched Lizzy break into a hearty laughter.
'So long as Jack does not mind being shared, I'm sure a Great Dane would be fun to have. I love big dogs, but I am in love with Jack.'
Hearing his name, Jack moved to Lizzy and wagged his tail.
Petting him lovingly she nodded. 'Yes Jack I love you very much. Very much indeed!'
'Lizzy! Georgie!'
Both the girls turned their heads at the sounds of their names being called from the deck.
'Come inside for lunch.'
'All right, Jane.' Lizzy called back and they got up to return to the house.
'I wonder if the guys are back from their game.' Georgie said as she skipped up the steps.
'Probably; and with a hungry appetite. ' Lizzy answered with a smile.
As soon as they entered the house, they heard Will and Charles debate against the game's score.
Rolling their eyes at each other, Lizzy walked into the kitchen while Georgie went to the bathroom.
'Need any help?' Lizzy asked when she met her sister at the counter piling grilled chicken breasts onto a plate.
'Just bring everything on the island there onto the table outside.'
Lizzy nodded and looked at the plates and bowls ready to be served. Meanwhile, Will and Charles were still debating.
'I think you traveled on that last round Charles. You know you are subject to doing it.'
'I did not travel! You don't know what you're talking about. If you hadn't hit me on my block---'
'Oh stop Charles. You can't be serious about that tap!' Will cried back before he gave a tender kiss to Lizzy on the cheek as she was getting ready to move the food outside.
'Hello my love.' He whispered and then went back to Charles.
'I didn't hit you at all!' Will said and grabbed himself a bottle of water.
'I'm guessing you two can't figure out who won?' Lizzy said with a smile.
'I won!' Both Charles and Will cried out.
Charles looked at Will and huffed.
Will only smiled and took a drink while standing against the counter watching Lizzy and Jane get lunch prepared.
'At least you two had fun right?' Jane asked as she finished with the chicken.
Charles took a drink from his water bottle and then spoke.
'Well I did until he-'
'No! No more about the game. It's time for lunch. You two wash up while the rest of us get it ready.' Jane ordered as she gave Charles a direct look.
Heeding Jane's orders, Will and Charles left. Georgie came in, passing her brother and Charles, and helped Lizzy set the table.
'Must have been a tie.' She said as she grabbed the corn on the cob.
'Men.' Jane breathed and went outside.
'This was absolutely delicious, Jane. Thank you for lunch.' Will said as he pushed his empty plate forward and reached for his lemonade.
'Yes, my love. I'm quite lucky to have you.' Charles said with a smile and kissed her on the cheek.
'Well you two sure ate enough. Lizzy? Georgie? Any more for you two?' Jane asked as she lifted up the plate with grilled asparagus.
Lizzy took the plate while Georgie shook her head.
'What are the plans for the rest of the day?' Lizzy asked, looking at Will.
'Are you two inclined for a drive to join us for a stroll around the park in a couple hours? I have to run a few errands, but you are more than welcome to stay.'
Jane and Charles looked at each other.
Charles turned his head to look at Will.
'Sure, we'd love to; however, we have some errands to run too. We can meet you back here say... around 4?'
Will nodded.
'What do you have to do?' Lizzy asked as she took her last bite of chicken.
'I have to pick up a few things for a project I'll be starting on next week.'
Lizzy almost dropped her fork.
'A project? Like what?' She asked.
Will smiled inwardly and stood up with his plate in hand.
'For me to work on, and you to enjoy. Be back in a couple hours.'
Will left everyone, especially a confused Lizzy, who looked at everyone.
'Do you guys know what he's up to?'
Everyone shook their head.
'He gets creative once in a while.' Georgie said as she stood up with her plate and glass in hand.
'Jane... do you know?' Lizzy asked and only received a surpressed grin and saw Jane get up as well.
Then her eyes darted to Charles who sat there with his hand over his mouth.
'You must know. You have to.'
It took a minute for Charles to answer, but his clue helped.
'Isn't it time you thought about what you want for your birthday?'
Seeing a huge smile plastered on her face, Charles took his dishes into the kitchen.
Lizzy and Georgie relaxed on the deck, waiting for everyone to return. It was starting to cool down from such a warm day, so Georgie put on a light jacket and Lizzy grabbed the throw blanket from the living room.
'I wonder what Richard's doing tonight.' Georgie pondered aloud while watching Jack sniff the lawn in the backyard.
Lizzy chose not to answer.
'Maybe he wants to come over. I know that he's in town.'
'Why wouldn't he be in town?' Lizzy asked.
Georgie looked at Lizzy and grinned.
'I think he's seeing someone. He's been going out of town different times of the week for a few nights. I know he's been really busy with work and all, but he also takes time to go out of town too.'
'How do you know all of this?'
Georgie smiled.
'He thinks he can keep secrets from me, but I have my eye on him. I always keep a good eye on Will and Richard. They think they need to protect me and keep a steady eye on me, but really they are the ones that need the eye.'
Lizzy started to laugh and asked for more information. Georgie smiled and turned her body on the lawn chair to face Lizzy directly.
'Well, for instance Richard, he's usually never here since he works all over the world, but recently he took a permanent assignment to stay here. That's not like him; granted Will loves for him to stay longer than overnight in Virginia, and Richard is also getting older. He's nearly 35 and I think it's time he settled down a wife, or at least a steady girl.'
'Georgie are you setting your cousin up?'
Georgie looked down and then slowly faced Lizzy.
'I have tried in the past, but it was in vain. I haven't set him up with someone in a long time. There was this one time, about a year ago, that I had him correspond with one of my older girl friends at Cambridge. She actually moved to D.C. for a political job of some sort. Anyways, I told her to contact Richard and see if he was around to show her the local spots and whatnot.'
'Did anything happen from it?'
Georgie shook her head.
'No. He didn't seem that interested in her.' Georgie paused in consideration. 'She liked him. I know that for certain. She was crushed when they stopped talking. They only went out once and that's only because I pushed him into it. Since then, he's been throwing himself into his work.'
'So how do you know he's seeing someone?'
'By his behavior. It's not like him. requesting to be here...it's just too strange. No matter what, I'd expect him to be at Pemberley doing his own thing during the summer, regardless of where Will and I are. Now he's here? I just find it all out of sorts for him.'
'So you think he's seeing someone around here?'
Georgie nodded.
'Anyone you know?'
'I'm wondering who it would be, but I don't have a clue yet. He meets so many people through his work.'
At that point, Lizzy's phone rang and she quickly went to answer.
'Hello?'
'Lizzy! It's Charlotte. What are you up to tonight?'
Lizzy bit her lip.
'Well I'm waiting for Will to get back so we can go on a walk around the park. Why?'
'Oh well, I was wondering if you guys would like to come out to the pub. It's been such a long time since we've been together for drinking and singing. How bout it?'
Lizzy hesitated. She didn't want to be around if Collins was going to be there, but the thought of going to the pub was nice.
'Umm...well who all is going?'
'Well, so far only Marianne and Robert. Elinor and Edward are busy tonight. Can you come? Please?'
'What about Bill?'
'Oh, he's not coming. He doesn't like going to the pub so much.'
Lizzy lit up at the idea.
'Really? Are you okay with that?'
'Sure! I have no problem with it. In fact, I really like going to the pub. I try to come out here whenever I can.'
'Well, why didn't you call me before?'
'Because I knew if Bill was there you wouldn't come, and after a few times of us going out, he told me he'd rather not come out anymore. He told me that it's not good for his reputation.'
'Really? Well I'm surprised he even lets you go out there then.'
'Oh Lizzy, really! It's not like that. I don't go out every night; but he understands that the pub and my singing is important to me.'
Lizzy sighed.
'Well what time will you be there?'
'About 8. You coming?'
'Let me talk to Will and the others. Jane and Charles and Will's sister are here, so...'
'Great! Tell them to come on out. The more the merrier!'
'Ok Charlotte, I'm sure we'll see you soon.'
'Bye!'
'Bye Char.'
Lizzy hung up and joined Georgie back on the deck.
'Was that Will?'
'No... it was Charlotte.'
Georgie gave her a strange look.
'Oh, a friend of mine from work and all that. Anyways, she wants to know if we would like to come out to the pub in Meryton.'
'That sounds like fun! Let's go!'
Lizzy giggled.
'You really want to go, huh?'
'Of course! I have yet to go to a pub here. You mentioned one of them, but I have yet to see it.'
'Ok let me call Will and Jane.'
Around 8, Lizzy opened the door to the pub and scanned the crowded area for any signs of Charlotte, Marianne, or Robert. Feeling Georgie's hand on her arm she looked at her and smiled.
'This is so exciting!! Is this the place where you sing?'
'Hmm mmm.' Lizzy said, and then saw Marianne sitting at a table towards the small stage.
'Come on.' Lizzy said to Georgie.
'Marianne! It's so good to see you. Hi Robert...how are you?' Lizzy said as she was welcomed with warm embraces.
'Oh Lizzy, I'm so glad you came. You will sing tonight, won't you? Please?' Marianne pleaded with her hands clasped.
Lizzy laughed and nodded.
'Sure I will. I can't come here and not sing at least one song.'
Marianne laughed and then smiled when she saw Georgie.
'Georgie!! Oh it's wonderful to see you, Sweetie. Come sit down and have a beer with us.'
Georgie sat down next to Robert who offered her a glass of beer from the pitcher they were sharing.
'Is Will coming?' Marianne asked when she noticed only Georgie and Lizzy were there.
'Yeah, he's trying to find a parking spot. Jane and Charles are on their way. They had to stop by to see Caroline, I guess.'
'What for?' Marianne asked almost disgusted.
'I don't know. Something about the apartment doesn't fit her needs. Who knows?'
Marianne rolled her eyes and directed Lizzy to sit.
Lizzy sat down, and while pouring herself a beer she looked around the table.
'Where's Charlotte?'
'She's getting set up for the queue for tonight.'
'Are you singing tonight too, Marianne?' Georgie asked.
Robert gave her a bemused look as he took a sip of his beer while Marianne felt all eyes on her.
'I guess so. I'm not sure what Charlotte has planned. We haven't been out like this in a long time.'
'You can say that again.' Lizzy remarked, before sipping her beer.
'Well if you weren't so busy with Will, maybe we could come out here more often.' Marianne teased.
'Oh don't even start, soon-to-be-Mrs. Brandon! I don't want to hear any of that. You know Will is more than happy to come out here and watch us perform.'
Marianne lightly slapped Lizzy with a joyful laugh.
'Teasing you is so much fun! How have you enjoyed the summer so far, Georgie?'
Georgie lit up.
'Oh, I'm having a lot of fun. I like being with my family and taking it easy. I even met Lizzy's parents.'
Marianne's jaw dropped and her eyes went wide and then looked at Lizzy.
'Yeah. She met them and as you can see, survived my mother.'
'I thought she was quite amusing.' Georgie said.
'Well now, I love her parents, and Lizzy knows this; but Fanny can be a bit much at times. I can only take her in small amounts, but she is a sweetie at times.'
Lizzy groaned.
'Oh come on Lizzy, you know it's true!' Marianne cried.
Before Lizzy could respond, she felt a warm hand on her shoulder and a tender kiss on her cheek.
'What's true?' Will asked as he sat down next to Lizzy and Georgie.
'That my mother can be a sweetie at times.' Lizzy said before finishing her beer and pouring another one.
Will didn't respond verbally, but everyone could tell he didn't want to respond in the wrong when he tried to give a genuine smile.
'You two are incorrigible. She's not that bad. I will admit that she can be ridiculous at times, but if you take her in small amounts-'
Lizzy put her hand up.
'Please let's not talk about my mom anymore. I love her. She can be great, and she is a good person with good intentions; but the way she goes about it can be intense. There, it's all said and done.'
Marianne huffed, but then saw Lizzy smile.
'Oh you know what---' Marianne started before Lizzy challenged her.
'What? What do I know?' Lizzy smiled.
Marianne only shook her head and smiled.
'Right...that's what I thought. Now drink some beer.' Lizzy said before turning to Will.
'Find a parking spot ok?'
'Yes I did. Not too far, but far enough. It's busy in here. Georgie are you okay and everything?' Will asked as he looked at Georgie quietly talking to Robert.
Georgie rolled her eyes and grinned.
'Yes Will, I'm fine. Are you okay over there?'
Will nodded and took a drink.
'Hi guys!' Charles said brightly as they joined the table.
'Charles! Glad to see you came along. Hi Jane how are you?' Robert said as he greeted them.
'Wouldn't miss this for the world.' Charles said happily and sat down.
'Where's Charlotte?' Jane asked as she sat down after saying hello to Robert.
'She's setting the queue.' Lizzy said, then poured Jane and Charles a beer.
'We need another pitcher. I'll go get one.' Marianne said and headed to the bar with the empty pitcher.
'Are you singing tonight?' Will asked Lizzy.
'Yeah, but I'm not sure what. Charlotte hasn't been by yet.'
'Why don't you go find out?'
'Find out what?'
Lizzy and Will turned at the sound of Charlotte's voice behind them.
'We were wondering where you were.' Lizzy said as she embraced her.
'I would've been done sooner, but I got caught up with everything. Here's the playlist. You're up three times tonight.'
'And Marianne?' Lizzy asked looking at the list.
'Well you two are doing a duet, and she'll go up two more times so it's an even 3 for you both.'
'Charlotte you're not on here.'
'I'm not singing tonight.'
'Charlotte! Why not?'
'I was going to, believe me, but with the playlist they have going on tonight, I thought I might as well skip my two songs. It's not a big deal, Lizzy. You need to get up there though. People have been asking about you.'
Lizzy groaned softly and turned towards the table.
'Don't you want to sing?' Will whispered.
Lizzy nodded.
'I do, but I don't like disappointing the regulars. We all have fun doing this, and since I haven't done it for a while, it's just a disappointment to myself that I've been neglecting something I like doing so much.'
Will studied her for a moment and then looked down at his glass.
'I'm sorry, Lizzy.'
Lizzy looked at him with alarm.
'Why should you be? It's not your fault. It's my own. But forget it. We're here now and I'm going to sing.'
'Well Lizzy...it is partly my fault. I mean with all the time we spend together, I just-'
Lizzy put her forefinger to his lips.
'Stop. Please. I wouldn't trade our time together for anything. Now, if you all will excuse me, I need to find Marianne, get you guys your pitcher of beer and head off for the show.'
Lizzy left the group to find Marianne waiting at the bar for the pitcher.
'Hey. You still up here?' Lizzy asked standing behind her.
'Yeah.' Marianne sighed. 'They're hooking up another keg in the back. Did you get the playlist?'
'Got it right here. You and I are doing a duet five songs in.'
Marianne took the list and looked it over then groaned when she saw her last number.
'She's got me singing a request.'
Lizzy smiled.
'I noticed.'
'Oh hush. Let's go.' Marianne said and dropped the pitcher off at the table before joining Lizzy by the stage.
'Seems that Charlotte really has this structured. Usually we get sheets and then go whenever.'
Lizzy nodded.
'I think it gives her something to do that doesn't include her husband.'
Marianne slyly smiled and then went up for the first number.
The time came when Lizzy and Marianne were doing their duet. Neither had practiced in a while, but were quite familiar with the song Charlotte selected for them. After the man in front of them finished, the two of them went on stage and sang 'Dancing Queen' flawlessly. Many in the crowd were singing along with them and getting into the groove of things. It was hard for both of them to continue during certain verses being that everyone at their table were cheering them on and singing along.
By the time Lizzy finished with Marianne, she was done for the evening and back at the table.
'What's all of this?' Pointing to the plates of half eaten food.
'That's some good stuff right there. Those are spicy chicken wings. Here try some.' Charles said with his mouth half full of one.
Lizzy laughed and shook her head.
'No thanks. I don't need anything spicy. Jane? Are those what I think they are?' Lizzy asked her sister pointing to the pile of cheese fries near Jane.
'Yes they are. Want some?'
Lizzy eagerly nodded and poured herself a beer.
'I see you guys had fun listening to us up there by having a sing a long down here huh?'
Everyone agreed while Lizzy was amused with some of compliments she heard from the group.
She eventually leaned into Georgie, asking her how she liked the pub and the atmosphere.
'I love this. I can't believe you haven't brought me here sooner! We should come here more often. You guys sing wonderfully by the way.'
'Oh thanks. I haven't been out here in a long while, but it's nice to come back. Marianne, Charlotte, and I always have fun here. You know Will came here once before to meet up with all of us. That was the night he told me he broke up with Caroline.'
Georgie's eyes went wide.
'Seriously?' Her head then darted to see Will listening to Robert.
'He really is happy with you Lizzy. I can see why too.'
Before Lizzy could get anything further, Georgie was asked a question by Charles.
Lizzy didn't get the chance to ask her throughout the rest of the night, but didn't press it either.
After Marianne sang a request from the crowd, everyone finished a few more beers and headed home.
Charlotte caught up with Marianne and Lizzy before they left.
'I was wondering if you guys would like to do this more often. You know, with a more structured playlist and maybe we could go through some new songs. We could even do this once a week.'
Marianne was the first to recover from the slightly shocking interest Charlotte was revealing.
'Well I'd love to come back more often, but I can't promise anything.'
'How about you Lizzy?'
Lizzy stood before them biting her lip.
'I'd like to Charlotte, but I won't do it as often as I used to. I'd rather do once every two or three weeks.'
'Well that could work, right?' Charlotte asked searching her friend's eyes for a yes.
Marianne shrugged.
'It could. I'm up for it. Just call me with the details when you have them and I'll put my foot down now on any more requests.'
'But the crowd loves it.'
'Charlotte, I'm not doing the requests. They are either overdone or not known by me.'
Lizzy laughed.
'I'll take the requests. Leave it to Marianne to only do the songs she's most passionate about.'
Marianne scoffed playfully, wishing everyone a good night and went along with Robert.
'Lizzy, I'm sorry if I'm pushing you guys into something. I just really like doing all of this.'
Lizzy looked at her friend closely.
'And why is that?'
Thinking she knew the exact reason why, Lizzy waited for her friend to respond.
'I don't know how to explain it. I guess I-'
As determined as Lizzy was in finding out the truth, she was pretty sure of the reason, but wanted to actually hear Charlotte say it for herself. Before she could though, Charlotte was interrupted by Will.
'Sorry Charlotte, Lizzy I'm going to pull the car around. Can Georgie wait with you?'
Lizzy nodded patiently and turned back to Charlotte.
'Well, what do you think it is?'
'I'm not sure. Maybe it's home life, maybe it's work. Who knows? I just feel happy doing things like tonight.'
'And Dr. Collins doesn't want to join you in doing something that makes you happy? Charlotte I can't believe you-'
Charlotte's hand went up and covered Lizzy's mouth gently.
'Lizzy I am perfectly aware of your feelings for my husband. I just... I don't know how to explain this.'
'Hiya guys!' Georgie's voice clearly chimed in.
Lizzy sighed inwardly and smiled at seeing Georgie stand next to her.
'Well, I'm going to get going. It was great meeting you, Georgie, and I hope to see you some more before you head back to England.' Charlotte said with a sweet smile and then turned to Lizzy,' I'll call you later this week.'
Lizzy nodded and watched Charlotte walk down the street.
'Everything okay?'
Lizzy shook her head slightly at the sound of Georgie's voice.
'Yeah, everything's fine. So! I think that you and I should go home and have some ice cream. What do you say?'
Georgie's eyes lit up and she quickly nodded her head to agree.
Will pulled up and parked the car to help Lizzy and Georgie get in.
'Everyone set?' He inquired as he buckled in and switched the gear into drive.
'Did you have fun, Georgie?' Will asked as he drove down the street.
'Oh yes! I can't wait to do this again. We should invite Richard to come out. Do they have karaoke nights, Lizzy?'
'Yeah they do. We should come out to that sometime. Charlotte and I were talking about doing this more on a regular basis, like we had done before. Only more structured.'
'Would you like to do that?' Will asked interested.
'Hmm yes and no. I mean I love singing at the pub, but I don't know what type of commitment Charlotte would want from me.'
'Well if it's something you want to do I encourage you to go for it, Sweetie.' Will said lovingly.
Lizzy looked at him and smiled.
'Thank you, Will.'
Georgie enjoyed the time she had to relax at the house during the weekdays when Will and Lizzy were working. Mostly throughout the week, Will would work from his home office, but for certain meetings, he would need to go to the office in the city. However, one morning while Georgie was using her brother's office to go over her email on her laptop, she needed to get a number from his address book.
Unable to find it, Georgie placed a call to Will at the office.
'Hiya Will. Real quick-where's your address book?'
'My actual book?'
'Yeah. I'm sure you have one.'
'Always.'
'Well, where is it?'
'Check in the left drawer on the top in my desk. It should be there.'
Georgie opened the desk drawer and found the address book in seconds.
'Got it. Thanks Will.'
'You're welcome. Everything else going okay?'
'Yeah I just need-'
Georgie thumbed through the pages and stopped when she saw a date coming close with a special note on it.
'Will?'
'Hmm?'
'I don't mean to pry, but I see in your address book, well...I found Lizzy's old address and her birthday is in here. That's coming up.'
'Yes it is. Don't you remember our conversation about this a while ago?'
Georgie smiled.
'Of course, but I didn't know it was that soon. I want to get her something.'
'I think that's a wonderful idea. Do you have any ideas?'
'No. What are you doing for her?'
Will chuckled before replying.
'Now that's a secret.'
'Will.' Georgie said sternly.
'No, I'm not telling you.'
As Georgie listened to her brother, she caught a glimpse of a brochure that was underneath the address book.
'Oh really? Well I'm sure it has nothing to do with this brochure here huh?'
A silent pause came from Will before he said anything.
'I don't know what you mean.'
'Liar. How about I take a guess.'
'Go ahead.'
Georgie scanned the brochure and smiled.
'No. I won't, but I will say that if this is what you're planning on doing, I want to be the first to have a copy. I won't ruin your surprise, but this idea has given me one of my own.'
'Well you must have a fancy imagination, because I don't know what your talking about.' Will chimed.
'Again, you're a liar and I love you. I'll see you tonight.'
'Love you too, Sweetie. I'll be home around 7.'
Georgie hung up and smiled to herself.
'Will, you have got one great mind.' She said to the room and then quickly pulled up the internet to search for Lizzy's gift.
Georgie found herself quite successful finding a birthday gift for Lizzy. She was so excited, that when she couldn't get through to her brother, she called Richard.
'Richard! Guess what I got Lizzy for her birthday!'
'Hello to you too, Georgie. No customary pleasantries?'
'Huh?'
'You know 'How are you?' 'Are you busy?' You sound excited though.'
'I am excited.'
'So why are you calling me?'
'Will is in a meeting and couldn't be bothered, and I want to share my news with someone. You should feel honored I'm calling you. I could have called Mrs. Reynolds, you know. '
'Okay okay. Well what did you get her?'
'Oh I'm too excited now to tell. You have to come over. Wait! Better yet I'll come and show you. You're not busy are you?'
Georgie could hear Richard sigh before he let a small laugh escape.
'Come on over, Georgie.'
It only took Georgie fifteen minutes to get to Richard's. She was so excited that she didn't notice a blue Jeep Liberty parked outside.
Up the front porch steps she ran and into the house she let herself in.
'Richard! Richard! Where are you?'
Georgie called out into the hallway and walked towards the kitchen. Her bellows were silenced when she found a tall red headed woman standing against the countertop with her arms folded.
'Oh! Umm... Hi! Is Richard around?'
The woman looked at Georgie with curiosity, then turned her head towards the den.
'He's in there. He should be just a minute.'
Georgie smiled and tried to be as polite as she could. For some reason though, she didn't like how Richard had a woman in his kitchen and hadn't let his own cousin know.
'You must be Georgie.'
Georgie half smiled and nodded.
The woman gracefully reached out her hand and held it in front of Georgie. Slowly Georgie held out her hand and felt the limp shake of this woman. Retracting her hand from her, Georgie softly cleared her throat.
'I'm sorry. I didn't catch your name.'
'Evelyn Crawford. I work with Richard.'
'Meh... is that right? Where?'
Evelyn shrugged.
'I'm really not at liberty to say. Government work and all. But I have heard about you. Richard talks about you and your brother William quite often. Close family, I must say.'
Georgie tried to smile and after a moment of silence, excused herself to go to the den. Without knocking on the door, she went right in.
'Georgie! You made it. Now what's this you have to show me?'
'Richard, who's the girl in the kitchen?'
Sifting through papers, Richard didn't look up but firmly stated,
'Don't start, Georgie. I work with her.'
'Really. Seems to me if you two were working, she would be in here helping you through your paperwork.'
Looking oddly at her, Richard laughed.
'Well the type of work we do together, we don't need paperwork. She's a field agent. She does reports, but not as much paperwork as I do. I was just finishing up.'
'I think it's odd how she's here at your house when she's just a mere field agent. Shouldn't she be in the city working or something?'
'What have you got to show me about Lizzy's gift?'
'Don't change the subject, Richard.'
'And don't put your nose in my business. It's strictly work related. Now what do you have to show me?'
Georgie sighed and flopped into a nearby chair.
'My fun is all moot at this point.'
Richard stopped and looked at her.
'Now sweetie, you know that-'
'Just tell me one thing. Are you seeing someone?'
Richard stood in front of Georgie and didn't speak for a few moments. Only taking in her question and the look on her face, Richard sighed. A moment later, he shook his head.
'Yes I am. But it's not Evelyn, if that's what you're thinking.'
Georgie's eyes glowed.
'Who is it?! Anyone I know?'
'No. No one you know. No one knows her unless this really is a super small world. She lives in Connecticut, but works in New York. I met her at a conference a short while back. In all reality, it was right after... um... well... it was soon after I returned home.'
'Oh! I knew it! I knew you were seeing someone. Now I can be angry at you.'
'At me? What did I do?'
'You neglected to tell me... everyone in fact! Why keep it a secret?'
Richard felt invaded. He didn't say anything because of the fiasco that happened between Lizzy, Will, and himself.
'Bad timing, I suppose.' Seeing the confusion on her face, Richard changed the subject again.
'Show me the gift you bought Lizzy, please. I need ideas too, and seeing what you got should help me out.'
Georgie smiled and went to Richard's computer. Quickly keying in the website address and selecting her choice, she proudly showed the display on the screen to Richard.
'That's what you're getting her?'
Almost frowning, she replied, 'Is there something wrong with this?'
'I-ah-no. I just thought... well, doesn't she have one?'
'What? No. I already checked. But that's not all. I got her this too.'
After a moment, the screen appeared with her second gift choice.
'Oh Georgie... she'll love that. She'll love it all.' Kissing her on top her head, Richard patted her shoulder.
'You think so? I know what Will is doing, and I thought that this could help add to it.'
'Anything you get her will be perfect. Now, I have to get going. Evelyn and I are going to be late for our meeting in the city.'
Georgie's face scowled at Richard's sudden need to leave.
'Cheer up, beautiful. I'll call you tonight when I get home.' Richard kissed Georgie's temple and turned to leave the room.
Somberly, Georgie slowly followed behind and found Richard and Evelyn gathering their things and moving towards the front door.
'It was very nice to meet you, Georgie. Have a good day.' Evelyn said calmly.
All Georgie could do was smile and nod.
'Bye Georgie. Talk to you tonight!' Richard called before climbing into Evelyn's truck.
Georgie didn't head straight home after Richard's. She was too worked up knowing that Richard was seeing someone and didn't tell anyone. It must have been over a month now since he met this girl at the convention he went to right when Georgie arrived. She decided to mull this through her head over an iced coffee and a quick trip to the local mall.
By the time she finished two iced coffees and had a couple bags in hand, Georgie felt better and made her way home.
Surprised to see Will's car in the driveway, she bounded into the house and went to search for her brother.
'Will? Will, are you home?' she called out as she set her bags down on the hallway floor along with her purse and tracked him down in his office.
'Hey I called out to you. Something the matter?'
Will popped his head up from a packet of paper he was reading and smiled.
'Sorry sweetie. I'm caught up in these notes, and I didn't hear you call.'
'You're home early. Meeting end sooner than you thought?'
Will stretched his arms out and then nodded.
'Yes it did. I didn't need to be in the other meetings I had planned, so I thought I'd come home and see what you were up to. However, when I got here, I found you weren't home. Did you go out for lunch or something?'
Georgie sat in an empty chair facing Will's desk and sighed.
'Well I went to Richard's to show him my gift idea for Lizzy.'
'Oh? Did he like it?' Will asked as he went back to his notes.
'Oh yeah, he did.' Georgie paused before venturing the water.
'Hmm Will? Did you happen to know that Richard has been seeing someone?'
If Will was at all surprised, he hid it very well as he flipped through the pages of his notes before looking quizzically at his sister.
'I didn't know that. Did Richard tell you this while you were there?'
'Well... there was a woman there in his kitchen. Someone he says he works with, but when I asked him if he was seeing her or anyone for that matter, he said he was, but not her.'
Will stopped what he was doing and looked intensely at his sister as she was relaying this information to him.
'Well how do you know he's seeing anyone?'
'He told me.'
'Do we know her?'
'No, not according to him. He met her right after he came to live here for a while. He said at some convention in New York. Apparently she lives in Connecticut but works in New York.'
Will didn't respond, but let out a soft sigh.
'You really shouldn't meddle into his business.'
'Meddle?! You think I was meddling? I was only asking him who the girl was.'
'Who was she?'
'Evelyn Crawford.' Georgie answered evenly.
'Doesn't ring a bell.'
'Will! You are so-'
Before Georgie had any chance to respond, the front door opened and Jack's barking could be heard as he ripped down the hallway to greet Lizzy.
'Hello? I'm home!'
'In the office!' Will called out as he sat comfortably waiting for her to walk in.
'Hi guys! How was everyone's day?' Lizzy asked as she kissed Will hello and sat on his lap.
'My day was pretty good, but its better now that you're here.' Will said as he gave Lizzy another kiss.
His arms wrapped around her waist before he grinned and looked at Georgie.
'Georgie was just informing me of some interesting news.'
'Oh? What?'
Georgie watched her brother carefully as he smirked in her direction and then looked at Lizzy.
'Yes. It's in regards to Richard. Apparently he's been seeing someone since shortly after his return here.'
The shimmering glow in Lizzy's eyes faded when she heard Richard's name. Will watched her with a playful regard, knowing she would feel uneasy, but was quick to comfort her within his tight embrace.
Georgie missed the look in Lizzy's eyes, but could tell from her hesitation that something was amiss.
'Oh really... I-how did you?'
Lizzy looked at Georgie with a faint smile.
'I went over to his place today to show him something, and uh, a woman was there. Someone he works with, but he told me, after I asked him, that he is seeing someone.'
'Anyone we know?' Lizzy asked.
Georgie shook her head.
Afraid of asking too many questions and concerning Will in her intrigue in finding out more, Lizzy simply nodded.
'They met in New York at a convention; so Georgie was telling me.' Will said, answering Lizzy's unasked question.
'Oh, I see. Well that's great for him! I just hope that things work out. That's a bit of a distance though, for a relationship.'
Georgie shrugged and Will pecked Lizzy's cheek.
'Nothing Richard can't handle, I'm sure. Well! I think we should think about dinner. I'm starving!' Will said as he let go of Lizzy and began to stand up.
'What are you hungry for?' Lizzy asked as she smoothed out her capris.
'Hmm... how about we go out tonight. Perhaps Olive Garden?' he replied as he walked out the door.
'Lizzy?'
'Hmm?'
'I'm not sure how to approach this, but how do you feel about Richard seeing someone?'
Lizzy let out a faint laugh as she looked at Georgie and then back at the t.v.
Since Will was away for the night on business, Lizzy and Georgie made it a girls' night for the two of them and rented a few movies that weren't in Will's collection just yet and watched them after a relaxing dinner out to a local steakhouse.
'It doesn't bother me at all. I'm merely surprised at him seeing someone so soon after - well after his return home. Why do you ask?'
'Well, it just seemed that when Will brought it up last week, you were uneasy about it.'
Lizzy grinned when she replayed her reaction.
'Let me tell you something about Richard. I don't really know how to tell you this, but ok here goes.'
Lizzy pressed the pause button as Georgie readied herself to give Lizzy her full attention.
'Now what I'm about to tell you, isn't known to too many people, and as far as your brother is concerned, as well as your cousin, I don't think they would appreciate you knowing this, but I'm going to tell you because I trust you.'
'You don't think they would trust me?'
'Oh no, that's not what I meant, I just, well you tell me what you think when I'm done. Okay?'
Georgie nodded and gave open ears to Lizzy.
Lizzy relayed the whole story from start to finish regarding Richard and her in the past, and with what happened when he returned for good. After Lizzy took a deep breath and finished her story, Georgie's eyes were wide with awe.
'So that's the whole tale.'
'That is... Wow, I can't believe this happened. I mean I believe you, but wow. My bloody brother and cousin... stupid.'
'Georgie?'
Georgie smiled at Lizzy.
'Lizzy let me tell you something. I'm sure you already know this, but Richard has always been a big flirt and slightly jealous of Will's stability with his job and life. Not that he isn't stable himself, but he's in a different line of work where he travels and isn't as settled in one spot as William is. I'm sure he got caught up in his emotions and in seeing a good friendly face. I can understand why you hesitate to tell me all of this, but trust me, those two just acted silly. And Will shouldn't have told you the way he did last week.'
Lizzy smiled and shook her head.
'Tell me about it. I had a conversation with him later that night, and all he says is that he simply was having a bit of fun and teased me, knowing my reaction. I didn't know what to think. I mean Richard and I hardly talked after the last time we saw each other, and then for him to come back and state he loves me? It was too much. I felt awful though, because it wasn't easy to get into the swing of things feeling that Richard would be heartbroken.'
'I think he jumped the gun, if you know what I mean. He's always been that way. But you're right. If you two didn't talk and you moved on with your life and he comes back thinking things were as he left, well he was in for a surprise and rightly so. But he seems over it. I think he's more embarrassed than anything. I know I would be!'
'Any embarrassment he felt or even feels, he's not alone. I want to be able to talk with him and enjoy his company along with everyone else. It's been a while since I've seen him too.'
'You know what? I think we should have a summer bash, right before I leave, and we could invite his date in advance so she can plan, hopefully she can come and that should make him feel better.'
'That's an idea definitely. We'll talk to Will and see what he says. How does that sound?'
Georgie nodded in agreement.
'Come here, Lizzy; give me a hug. You look like you could use one after telling me so much.'
'Thank you, Georgie. I feel better telling you about it. I mean, Jane knows, and so does Charles, but you know Will and Richard more than I do now, so telling you actually gives me relief.'
'Well I have lived with Will pretty much my entire life and Richard was always around. They're men, and men act this way.'
Lizzy and Georgie couldn't help but laugh at the fact.
Resuming the movie with light hearts, both the girls contemplated the misunderstanding no more. Georgie would keep her word, but would have another word with Will and Richard by themselves to keep them in line.
'Oooh It's coming up so quickly!! I can't wait! Only a little over a month and I'll be Mrs. Brandon. How wonderful does that sound?'
Lizzy smiled wickedly at Georgie and Jane as Marianne spouted out her excitement for her wedding soon to come.
'It sounds lovely.' Georgie encouraged before taking a bite of her pasta.
The four of them decided to have a leisurely lunch on a lazy Thursday afternoon. Lizzy had taken some time off to spend with Georgie, and gathered the girls out for lunch and a pedicure.
'I can't believe it's coming up closer and closer. Will is still planning things.'
'Oh I know,' Marianne started again,' Robert told me that Will wants to meet with him and me to go over some final details and try to tie up some loose ends.'
'When do you plan on that?' Lizzy asked.
'Hmm... I'm not sure yet. Probably in a couple weeks.'
'That seems pretty far, don't you think?' Jane asked as she looked at Lizzy.
'I don't think so. But it's up to the guys. They just need to let me know so I can schedule it in.'
Jane, worrying for Marianne's health before her wedding, expressed this to her as gently as possible.
'Oh sweetie, I'm fine. In fact, Georgie! I have something to talk to you about.'
Georgie's eyes lit up as Marianne turned her full attention on her and began talking about her summer project.
'I've been tutoring some students of mine this summer with their music, and I was wondering if you would like to help me out. I have so many students interested that I'm actually quite surprised, and with your love for music I thought you might enjoy it.'
Georgie squealed at the idea and started to clap her hands.
'Oh that's brilliant! I'd love to help you out. When do you tutor?'
'Well I give lessons to some private students on Mondays and Tuesdays, but the rest of the week, and for the better part of Saturday mornings, I tutor. I have about 15 children that I help.'
'How many do you teach lessons to Marianne?' Lizzy asked before ordering another iced tea.
Marianne smiled.
'4. They come by my place and I teach them for about a two hours. I've been really busy with the children and I love the work, but your help would be much appreciated Georgie.'
'Do you hold the tutoring lessons at your place too?'
Marianne nodded and Georgie agreed to do it.
'Wonderful! Here's my address. When would you like to start?'
'When do you need me?'
'Hmm... how about you start next Wednesday at 1? That work out okay?'
'Yes, thank you very much. I can use this as my extracurricular work for summer study too. Oh thank you, Marianne!'
'You're very welcome. Oh! You will also get paid for any children I transfer to you. This should help free up my time as well so I can plan for the wedding with more consistency.'
Laughing together, the four women finished their lunch within the half hour and then went to the nail salon for their much-wanted pedicures.
'That was fun. I'm glad you thought of this, Lizzy.' Jane said as she admired her toes.
'Oh thanks, Jane. I'm just glad I was able to take a few days off. Do you want anything to drink?'
Jane shook her head and sat down on the sofa.
'So... I was talking with Charles about this yesterday and we weren't able to come up with any ideas, but we were thinking that maybe you could provide some insight.'
Lizzy sat next to her sister and sighed.
'Ok Jane, spit it out.'
'What would you like for your birthday?'
Lizzy began to laugh as she anticipated the question would come up sooner or later. Lizzy's birthday was fast approaching; it was nearly the end of July and her birthday was the 31st.
'Do you realize that you ask me this question every single year?'
'Oh, I know I do, but you aren't really in want of anything from what I can tell.'
Lizzy sighed again, but much deeper than before.
'You're right, I can't really think of anything. I really don't think I need anything to be quite honest.'
'I was afraid you would say that.'
Lizzy started laughing at her sister, and Jane sort of frowned at Lizzy having no ideas.
'Oh Jane, why? You know I've never been good at that sort of thing. Why does it bother you now?'
'It always has! It's always very difficult to shop for you. Christmas can be such a nightmare!' Jane said with a straight face.
Lizzy looked at her sister calmly, then arching one brow, started to laugh again.
'Oh Jane! You know that's not true. If anyone is difficult to shop for, it's Mom! Goodness!'
Jane tried to keep her straight face, but soon joined in with Lizzy's laughter.
Jane soon shrugged and finally replied.
'I tried didn't I?'
'You most certainly did; and lost!'
'It's true though, Lizzy. Charles and I have a few ideas, but we want to know if you have anything in mind.'
'Hmm... I'll have to think. You two really don't need to get me anything though.'
'Hush. You know I always get you something and I always will. Think it over and let me know.'
Before Lizzy could respond, the front door opened and slammed shut.
Craning her neck towards the front hall, Lizzy saw Will run his hand through his hair and his other hand loosen his tie.
He mumbled to himself as he walked into the living to find Lizzy and Jane.
'Hi sweetie. Bad day?' Lizzy asked as she stood up to greet him properly.
After giving Lizzy a long kiss, he sighed and sat down on a chair across from Jane.
'It was hell! Pure hell today. Where's Georgie?' Will practically had snapped.
'Whoa there, tiger. Slow down. You're home first of all, so be at ease. Georgie won't be home tonight for dinner. After our afternoon together, Marianne took her to her place to go over a few things.'
'Go over a few things? Like what?'
Lizzy crossed the living room into the kitchen to pour Will a strong drink. When she returned, she calmly replied.
'I won't tell you exactly. This is Georgie's surprise for you. Now drink up. Charles should be here in an hour and when he gets here, we are going to dinner.'
Will grumbled as he accepted the glass offered by Lizzy and took a long sip.
'Well, I'm hungry. Charles said he was swamped today in meetings when I talked to him earlier. He'd better not be late.'
Jane hid a smile from Will and Lizzy by covering her mouth with a throw pillow. Lizzy, on the other hand, gave Will a grim look.
'What's with you? Charles is nice enough to drive out here to have dinner with us, and you're in a bad mood.'
Will looked up from his glass and studied Lizzy carefully before responding.
'I am.' He said indefinitely. 'And I'm not sure I'll get out of it soon.'
'Well you'd better, William Darcy! Otherwise you can stay home and make yourself something for dinner with Jack to keep you company.'
Before Will could respond, the front doorbell rang.
'It's open!' Will called out, not taking his eyes off Lizzy.
The sound of footsteps preceeded Charles as he walked in briskly with a tired smile on his face.
'Hello everyone! Are we ready to go?'
Will said something incoherent, getting Charles's attention.
'Come on now, Will. We are having a wonderful dinner tonight, and then we are going out to a movie. This should be fun!' Charles said as he sat down next to Jane and gave her a kiss.
'Sorry Charles. Will might be staying home tonight if his mood doesn't get better. I'd rather go by myself if he's going to be grumpy.'
'I'm not that grumpy, Lizzy. Let me just finish my drink and change.'
'Well, hurry up.' Lizzy almost whined. 'We should be leaving now. You can see Charles is ready.'
Will smothered a grin before taking the last sip in his glass. Once he was finished, he put his glass away and looked at the three of them lounging in the living room.
'I'll be down in fifteen minutes.'
Lizzy sighed as she looked at Charles and Jane with an amused grin.
'Come on, Jack!' Will called and up the stairs they went.
'Oh I can't wait to start! You have wonderful music for instruction.'
'I've collected some works since I was 15. My favorites are filed away in a secret spot.' Marianne answered with a lovely smirk.
'Well what level are the students you tutor?'
'All sorts, but mostly they are beginners. Nothing horrible in the least, just new beginners trying to get ahead.'
'Well I'm excited to start. I can't wait to tell Will.'
'I'm sure he'll be happy to hear about it.'
Marianne offered Georgie some coffee as they sat in the comfortable living room perusing all the music Marianne would be using to tutor her students. As they selected appropriate pieces and talked animatedly about their favorites from the bunch, Robert entered the room with someone in tow.
'Hello love. Working hard, I hear?' Robert said with a laugh.
Marianne and Georgie stood up to greet Robert, but stopped when they noticed the visitor.
Kissing him hello with bright eyes and a wide smile, Marianne looked quickly at Georgie and then back at Robert.
'Georgie's going to help me with my tutoring!'
Robert looked at Georgie and smiled.
'That's wonderful news. I'm only certain you will enjoy it as Marianne does.'
'I'm excited about it.'
Robert smiled before feeling a nudge from Marianne.
'Oh! Sorry. Marianne and Georgie I'd like you to meet one of my employees, Brad Craven. Brad this is my fiancée, Marianne Dashwood, and our dear family friend, Georgiana Darcy.'
Brad Craven stood at a good 6' 3", towering over his host and present company. With bright blue eyes, dark red hair and a wicked smile that was starting to melt Georgie, Brad kept his eyes on her for a moment longer than the rest and then spoke to Robert.
'I didn't mean to intrude, but Robert wouldn't take a no for his invitation to dinner.' Brad said lightly in his baritone voice.
Robert leaned closer to Marianne's ear and stated,
'I didn't think you'd mind and now that Georgie is here, we have a perfect set for dinner.'
Marianne's smile grew wide and she nodded.
'Of course you can stay! You are no intrusion at all. I have to tell you guys though, that I haven't started dinner yet. We were so busy talking about music and things that it slipped my mind.'
Robert grinned at both girls, then slapped his hands together.
'Then I guess we'll go out. My treat to you both. Are you two finished here, or should we give you a few more minutes?'
Georgie looked at Marianne for confirmation, and Marianne replied they were done and could finish talking later.
'Wonderful, then let's go, shall we?' Robert said and led the company out the door.
'I feel better after that shower.'
'Took you long enough.'
Will wrapped Lizzy into his arms as they waited to get a small drink before the movie for themselves and a small popcorn and drink for Charles.
'Oh, now why are you in a bad mood Miss Bennet?'
'I'm not in a bad mood, Will.'
'I'd beg to differ. You were fine when I got home and now you seem... ruffled.'
Lizzy tried to turn her head to look at Will and once she caught a glimpse of his face she turned back around looking ahead at the drink selections.
'I'm not ruffled. I just don't understand why you were in a bad mood when you came home. And now you're all happy!'
'Well didn't you want me in a good mood before going out?'
'I did, yes; and I'm glad you are, but that doesn't mean something wasn't bothering you before. Now does it?'
Will let his arms fall to his side and looked at the back of Lizzy's head with a somber face.
'Lizzy turn around please.'
Trying to make sure she didn't lose her place in line, Lizzy hesitated and then turned to face Will. She was slightly startled when she saw the grim look wash over his handsome features.
'What's wrong?' She asked lovingly.
'Lizzy,' Will let out a deep breath and ran his fingers through his hair before continuing, ' Lizzy, I lost a merger this afternoon after working on this contract for two weeks.'
'Why?' Lizzy asked softly.
The line moved ahead and both of them proceeded before Will replied.
'They wanted more money, after trying to negotiate with them and make them see that the company isn't worth the amount they want me to increase to.'
'So this is why you were in such a bad mood?'
Will gave Lizzy a strange look, and as she went up to the counter and ordered, Will finally answered.
'Well yeah. This merger would have been huge for the enterprise and we would have been able to help them from disintegrating.'
'Thank you.' Lizzy said to the server and grabbed a couple napkins.
'Here take this.' Lizzy said handing the drinks to Will.
As they walked towards the theater, Lizzy took a couple pieces of popcorn and munched on them. She then stopped at the door and looked up at Will.
'I'm sorry to hear you lost your merger contract. You didn't tell me about it, so I had no idea what was bothering you.'
Will's look softened and he kissed Lizzy on the cheek.
'I know, but I couldn't talk about it with anyone. Even the CEO has to keep his secrets at times.'
Will winked and guided Lizzy into the theater.
Charles and Jane waved them over when they saw them enter.
'Glad you guys finally made it. The movie is going to start any minute.' Charles said as he grabbed the popcorn from Lizzy's hand.
'Here are some napkins, popcorn hound.' Lizzy said with a giggle and handed him the napkins.
'What can I say? They have great popcorn here.' Charles said between munches.
Will took Lizzy's hand right after she sat down and kissed the back of it.
'So now that this merger has unfortunately fallen through, you can talk to me about it?'
'Not exactly.'
'Well, why not?'
Will took a sip of their drink and then looked at her.
'Because, my love, I'm not finished with them just yet. I still have a few tricks up my sleeve and might be able to secure it.'
'Well then why the hell were you in a bad mood if you knew that already?'
Will stifled a laugh.
'Because at the time I came home, I was upset that I had to play these games with them. The company desperately needs my help, but trying to make them understand that is difficult. I was also just in a foul mood. You know that when I get like that I need time to cool off.'
'You are so difficult, Will.'
Lizzy turned her eyes to the screen and paid attention to the trailers that started to play.
'You know you love it.' Will said in a hushed voice and smiled before he turned to watch the trailers.
'I hope Robert didn't persuade you into coming over by making you feel obligated, Brad.' Marianne asked as they sat down to coffee in the living room.
After dinner, the four decided to return to Robert and Marianne's place for coffee.
'Oh no, please don't think that. I actually don't live too far from here, and seeing as Robert has asked before, I really wanted to accept; but with my situation at home, I couldn't accept before tonight.'
Marianne's features scrunched softly in confusion. Georgie, admiring Brad and thinking him a man she like to get to know better, kept her opinions to herself, but hoped he would share.
'Oh?' Marianne abled herself to say.
'Yes. You see,' Brad cleared his throat, 'My uncle lives with me and helps me take care of my daughter.'
Marianne's eyes widened, but her smile tried to cover her surprise.
'You have a daughter, how old is she?'
'Seven. Well, she'll be seven in September. '
Georgie tried to hide her disappointment and silently cursed that this was always how it was for her; meeting men she liked and learning that they had other intentions or commitments. She was soon shaken from her reverie when she heard Robert speak up.
'Brad's daughter is an angel. Very well behaved, like her father.'
Georgie could only smile when she saw Brad's eyes fall upon her.
'What's her name?' Marianne asked sweetly before sipping her coffee.
Brad grinned at the thought of his daughter with her bright eyes and goofy smile.
'Staci.' Brad said proudly.
'Staci... that's a pretty name.' Marianne said before stealing a glance at Georgie, who was silent.
Brad seemed to notice, because he looked right at Georgie when he began again.
'My uh, ex-girlfriend, Tammy, Staci's mother; well we didn't get along very well. When was born, I hardly saw her. But her mother had an accident a few years ago, and she passed away, leaving me Staci. So now my uncle Rob and I raise her and take care of her.'
Georgie, at the end of hearing that Brad's ex-girlfriend had passed away, saw a flicker of hope.
'So, are you seeing anyone now?' Marianne finally came out with the big question. Robert's cup hit the coffee table as he placed it down a little bit harder than he intended.
'Marianne, don't you think that's a question you shouldn't-'
Brad's hand came up and stopped Robert from continuing.
'No, it's okay Robert. To answer your question, Marianne, I'm not seeing anyone. Not at present.' He replied as he looked at Georgie.
Smiling shyly, Georgie finished her coffee and got up to get more.
'Anyone else?' she offered cheerfully as she walked towards the kitchen door.
'I'll help you.' Marianne said and joined her.
When they felt the coast was clear, Marianne began.
'He's really cute! And single! You should go for him.' Marianne said as she nudged Georgie, who was pouring more coffee.
'He is cute. But I'm not staying in the states much longer, Marianne, I have school to finish. I can't have a long distance relationship. I would feel awful.'
Marianne rolled her eyes and made a clicking sound with her mouth before telling Georgie she was being silly.
'I'm not saying you should marry the man... not yet; but have a few dates, see what he's like.'
'Meh... I don't know. It seems too complicated.'
Marianne would have no more. and grabbed Georgie's hand carefully so she would not to spill the coffee in her hands.
'We'll see about this.' Marianne said, and before Georgie could react, they were back in the living room.
'Georgie, I was just telling Brad here about where you're from. He asked since he noticed your accent.'
'Oh right. Yes I'm from England.' Georgie wanted to slap her head into place. How stupid was that response?
Brad chuckled and grinned sweetly.
'Did you just move here then?'
Georgie tried not to answer with such sweet sadness, but it was inevitable.
'No, my brother lives here permanently, in Manassas, so I'm staying with him. I attend Cambridge and during the summers I visit my brother.'
Okay, so that wasn't a complete lie, right?
Georgie took in a deep breath and sipped her coffee as she tried not to watch Brad look at her with those gorgeous eyes.
'How long are you here now?'
'Well, my plans are not quite settled as to the definite date I leave, but I have fall term, so I'll have to return next month I'm sure.'
Brad looked at Robert and then back at Georgie.
'Have you enjoyed yourself so far?'
Beaming at the thoughts of her time here, she eagerly nodded.
'Oh yes. I have had so much fun since I came. I can't tell you how much I dread going back. I think my brother wants me to transfer to school here so he can see me more often.'
'That would be cool.'
'Anyone want something stronger to drink, or can I get anyone some desert? I think we have some ice cream in the freezer.' Robert offered as he stood up to move into the kitchen.
'I'd like some ice cream, please.' Georgie replied and Brad followed.
'Sure thing. Marianne, why don't you help me in the kitchen.' Robert said as he turned and walked out the room.
Marianne, grinning from ear to ear, left to follow him.
'Bye! Be safe! Call me tomorrow!'
Waving from the front porch steps, Lizzy was exhausted. It had been a long day, and now it was nearly 11 pm.
As she saw Charles's car drive away, Lizzy turned to enter the house and hoped to be able to just go to sleep.
Her hand was rubbing her neck when she entered the kitchen to find Will with a concerned look.
'What now?'
'Georgie's not home.'
'So?'
'It's late. It's almost midnight.'
'Will it's almost 11.'
'I know!'
'I'm sure she's fine. She's with Marianne, and most likely Robert is with them too.'
Lizzy turned from the island countertop and patted her left leg for Jack to follow her upstairs.
Will also followed, thinking the worst of his sister's whereabouts.
'Well she could have called to let me know she's okay!'
Lizzy slowly picked her legs up on each step and let her head hang back as she went.
'I'm sure she's fine. Don't fuss.'
'But I know my own sister. She might be hurt or worse she might be-'
Lizzy turned and faced Will.
'She's fine. Stop worrying, okay? You will see her again. I promise.' Lizzy said with a sarcastic undertone before continuing up the stairs.
'Oh, by the way Will,' Lizzy stopped in her place, and seeing Will looking at her as if she had any information on her whereabouts at that moment at all, grinned and said,
'Your sister grew up a few years back. Last time I saw her, which was this afternoon, she was an adult.'
Turning and walking into the bedroom, Lizzy called out for Jack and went to bed.
'I should probably get going. Knowing my brother, he'll be worried about me since I'm out so late.'
'Ahh yes... William can be quite... protective of his little sister.' Robert replied.
Brad stood at the front door too as he needed to head home as well.
'I'm sure he means well.' Brad said.
'He always has and always will. Our parents died a while ago, so I'm pretty much the only family he has, except our cousin Richard. Well and other more distant relatives; but we're very close.'
Brad smiled and offered to escort Georgie to her car.
Waving Robert and Marianne goodnight, both of them walked slowly to Georgie's car.
'Where's your car?' Georgie asked as she only saw hers in the driveway.
'Well, I did say I live close to here. In fact, I'm just up the street.'
'Do you want a ride?'
Brad looked at her and smiled.
'Sure. Thanks.'
Silently getting into the car, they both buckled up and Georgie pulled out onto the street.
'Just down the block and to the left.'
'Have you lived here long?' Georgie asked as she pulled up to the house he indicated was his.
'About 4 years. I bought the place right after I was hired by Robert, and I've lived here with Staci. My uncle came to live with us when his wife died of breast cancer about three years ago.'
'Oh, I'm sorry.'
Brad looked at Georgie.
'Don't be, please. We are all fine and happy. Healthy too. We just lead normal lives and carry on as always.'
Georgie smiled at Brad and put her hands in her lap. Brad cleared his throat and then began, 'Well, I should get going. It was great to meet you.'
'Nice meeting you too.'
Brad began getting out of the car, when he stopped and turned to look at Georgie intensely.
'You know, I've always been invited to come over more often to Robert's, but never had the chance. I now see what I could have missed, and am glad I didn't. Perhaps if you're free, we could meet again?'
Georgie lit up like a Christmas tree.
'I'd like that, Brad.'
'Good. I'll give you a call.'
Before Georgie could even give him her number, he was up the driveway to his house.
