it's good oldfashioned word [2003] which does me fine most of the time; it looks just dandy on the template which I have all set up and formatted with the right size margins, gutter etc etc but when CreateSpace do the conversion to PDF it kinda squashes it down. I have no idea why. I can only assume it lies in the exigencies of file conversion. It happily embeds fonts, even the fancy curlicues I use for a segue as being prettier than stars, and if it had let me remove the line above the footnote, it would have been fine, since it's in a much smaller font. I'm pretty good at formatting as a general thing [I've been passed some dire documents to work with in my time by people even less fond of technology than I am] but the mysteries of file conversion defeat me. I thought the point of a PDF was to preserve the appearance...
Oh! something I want to pass on to other people publishing. If CS tells you there is an issue with 'unprintable markup' I discovered what this is, it's if you have place names, Word insists on tagging them if you don't uncheck the button which is hidden deeply in options, or alternatively, which is easier, you can turn all of them off as you go through proofing.
