I have never been particularly impressed by stories that seek to excuse Darcy's behaviour at the Assembly. JA certainly did not and Darcy himself admits that he was allowed to look meanly at those he considered beneath him. elizabeth was perfectly within her rights to call him on his behaviour and he indirectly acknowledged it.
