Re: Gentlemen of Gloucestershire: Chapter 2

As a theatre major we once talked in class about all the ways fans were used to communicate "unspokens" in older times: a lot said with the flick or waving of a wrist. All those "minor" details we as moderns often breeze by were incredibly important to how people behaved and understood things, and while we might like the fireworks, I think it's important to show how often Austen's characters don't say aloud everything they're thinking, because realistically they would not. Unless, of course, you're just screwing around and being a jerk, though even Captain Tilney isn't as blunt as a contemporary guy might be (while still pushing the envelope for all its worth in this time).

Catherine here has some of the problems I think most of us have at 18: we want so desperately to be respected as an adult, while inwardly are still clueless or uncertain about so many things around us, and trying to hide it as much as possible. So yes, Catherine's going to do her best to be the best little parson's wife possible, even when she suspects things are going south.

As for the title, there's more to be seen as the book unfolds. Certainly there's a lot of ungentlemanly conduct all around. But how that gets processed, understood, and reacted to: well, we'll just have to see. winking smiley
