I thought carefully about what would be written in the newspaper article, as I'm fairly certain they didn't have the same victim protection laws as they have today. So the news article itself does not reveal much on the identity of the victim.
The gossip pages though are a different story. From my research there was strong libel precedent in law, hence why they were identified as only 'Miss B'and 'Mr D', as it could be argued that they could refer to anyone, and not specifically by name, even though in Mr Darcy's case everyone would know exactly whom it was referencing. But it should have been vague enough to avoid a court case.
