ow' is old, which isn't necessarily a sign of age, a little ow' mauther is a young girl. Mauther tends to be younger, mor is used as a form of address to an older woman as bor is to a man.

And this is some of the extra few thousand words my editor has been having me write "Get some fluff in it for goodness sake" so yes, in the rewrite, I have had them discussing botany, the odd brush of fingers. Marianne isn't unattractive, she just has a rather strong chin and unfortunate eyebrows. Without them she'd be vapidly pretty with no personality.
