I can't decide what is more horrid in Mrs. Vardy - that she accustomed her daughter to have her mail read by another, that in congratulating her on her wedding, she accused her of Sapphic tendencies or that Madeleine didn't know what her first name was... (not that her first action, in arranging her daughter's marriage to her own lover doesn't beat all this, but little things add up rather horridly too)
