Chapter 9
The next two weeks went by fairly quickly and every night Lizzy came home she tended to Jack, ate dinner Jane made, and then crashed on the couch. Since she lived closer to her work, she stayed later so she could work overtime. So far it was draining. Lizzy was hardly around to do anything except to recharge her batteries at night in front of the t.v. and go to bed at ten. Besides it was all she could do to avoid the pesky little voice in her head telling her something she didn't want to hear.
Will and Lizzy kept contact through email and phone as much as they could, but being that Will was busy with contracts, the board, and other appointments and Lizzy busy with managing her team and filling out reports and getting her own personal work done, the two didn't have time to see each other. In fact they wouldn't be able to for another week. Will was going out of town to Houston for three days and then flying into Seattle for another four. Lizzy wasn't let down though. She decided to keep plugging through and they both decided that when he returned, they would see each other the next night.
Jane felt bad for her sister being that Charles had now become a frequent visitor and Jane would sometimes go to his place if she absolutely knew it was okay with Lizzy. Tonight was one of those nights. It was Friday night and Lizzy had just sat down to Jane's chicken pot pie and a tall glass of milk.
‘Lizzy are you sure it's okay?' Jane called from the kitchen as she cleaned up the cookware. Lizzy started to take her firs bite and almost rolled her eyes. Her sister was of a sweet and mild temper. She wanted to make Lizzy feel at home and to be there for her. However, Lizzy didn't need a babysitter and it started to bother her that Jane felt she needed to be cared for so carefully.
‘Jane really I'll be just fine. You and Charles go have fun and I'll be fine here with Jack. I really won't be good company tonight anyways. I'm exhausted and am not in the mood to do anything but sleep. That's the plan for tonight.'
Jane came to see her sister's face and saw bags under her eyes and a long face from working so hard.
‘Oh! I almost forgot. Charlotte called and told me that she was going to stop by tonight with some new music. She said she has a couple of songs she wants to rehearse with you. I told her to stop by after 7.30 since you get home late now.'
‘Thanks Jane.' Lizzy said as she drained her glass full of milk and gave Jack a bite of food.
‘I'm going to get ready for Charles and then be off. I left some brownies on the counter for you if you'd like some.' And then she went to her room. Lizzy cleaned up from her dinner and went to her room. Jack followed her started to lick her face when she put her head down on her pillow. She just stared out at the wall. Thinking of nothing really until Will entered her thoughts. She was frustrated that she would have to wait to see him, but she was too tired to actually feel anything beyond that.
Lizzy laid on her stomach some more with her feet hanging over the bed and her arms just resting by her head. Jack laid next to her stomach and promptly looked around the room with his head on her back.
After sometime the buzzer went off and Lizzy moaned. Jane scurried to the door. Lizzy could hear some laughter and then hushed voices. Soon she heard footsteps in the hall and Jack jumped off the bed to see who it was.
‘Lizzy, Charles is here. I'm going now.'
Lizzy put one hand up in a hard effort to wave goodbye.
‘Have fun.' She mumbled into her pillow and heard Jane chuckle as she left.
After the door was heard to shut, Lizzy moaned and then after a moment of hearing nothing, she slowly crept from her bed to stand. Not before she made it to her bedroom door did she hear the buzzer. Jack went wild and started to bark at the front door and then at Lizzy.
‘Jack stop.' Lizzy said as she went to answer.
‘Hi! You look awful.'
It was Charlotte. Smile on her face and her hands full of cds and a notebook she walked right into the apartment.
‘Jane gave me directions. Better ones than you gave me. Well did she tell you I was coming over? I hope so. I need you to take a look at some of the music I have lined up for us on Tuesday. Which by the way, they are moving it from Tuesday nights to Thursday nights. Which works out better for us I think.'
Lizzy stood by the door and closed it as she watched Charlotte seat herself on the couch.
‘Oh goodie.' She mumbled and walked towards the couch.
'Here...hi Jack...I brought over Marc Anthony's cd and then I brought over the schedule oh! and I have mix cd that we usually get our songs from.' Charlotte rattled off as she petted Jack. Lizzy picked up the Marc Anthony cd and looked at the songs.
‘Which one on here were you thinking?'
‘I need to know. It's a great song with a good strong beat. I think we would have fun.'
‘Have you heard any other songs on this?'
Charlotte shook her head and then the phone rang.
Without moving her eyes from the cd case, Lizzy picked up the cordless that was on the coffee table and answered.
‘Hello Lizzy. How are you dear? Is Jane home? I wanted to finish our conversation about her dinner with us and Charles.'
‘Hi Mom. I'm tired. Jane is out on a date with Charles and I'm sure she would be happen to entertain your ideas in the morning while I'm asleep.'
‘No need to get puffed up about anything Lizzy. But I am glad to hear that Jane is with him. She was so excited this afternoon that I can feel it for her. Have you heard from Will? Have you seen him?'
‘No mom haven't seen him since the move.' Lizzy was not about to tell her mother that they talked nearly everyday by phone or email.
‘Ahh...well you know...'
Ahh yes...here it comes! Lizzy thought.
‘Dr. Collins told me the other day that Will is the nephew of his most prized patient. Mrs. De Bourgh! Can you believe it?! I couldn't. I mean...she is rich beyond belief and they look nothing alike and Will is so kind and rich too and of course his wealth is nothing compared to Charles, though I know that he can provide very very well for our dear Jane. By the way...if you don't hook up with Will, which in my opinion is very stupid if you don't, you can hook up with my boss! That is splendid! I should book you an appointment for something so you can come in and meet him! I think he would make you happy. I really do-‘
‘Mom! Please! I don't need to be set up with him and I surely don't need you to tell me about his patients. In fact, I'm in the middle of discussing music with Charlotte and I-‘
‘Oh Charlotte! Charlotte Lucas?! Put her on.'
‘Mom...'
‘Lizzy put her on! If you won't see the good doctor than maybe she will. Since you are so determined to be uncivil and cold to my boss. She at least has good manners. Her parents are kind people, although they are artless when they show off their new home to us every time we have dinner with them. Lizzy I insist you put on Charlotte at once!'
Lizzy rolled her eyes and reluctantly handed the phone to Charlotte who looked at it with a confused look and refused to take it. Lizzy eye's went wide and urging her to speak with her mother.
‘eh...hel...hello Fanny? How are you?'
‘Oh Charlotte! I am well I am well. But enough of me, I was wondering if you would like to come into the office sometime and meet my boss Dr. Collins. He's very rich you know and very admired by his patients. Since Lizzy is too busy being independent (she said with an air) I was wondering if you would like to meet him. You're such a sweet and obeying girl.'
‘Uh...thanks Fanny. (she paused as she looked at Lizzy with resignation) I guess I can come by later next week.'
‘Oh wonderful!! I will let him know! Oh wear something pretty dear and I'll let you know when your appointment is. Ta!'
And the phone went dead with the dial tone.
‘What did you just do?!' Lizzy cried and Jack barked as he rose up from his spot near Lizzy's feet.
‘Oh come on...you're mother is trying to help me out. We've been friends for a long time now Liz. I'm not as young as you are...I might be able to benefit from this.'
‘Are you on drugs?! My mother just set you up!'
Charlotte shrugged. Lizzy rolled her eyes and blew out a breath. She sat back on the couch and closed her eyes. It was worthless. She didn't feel like arguing, but she didn't understand her thinking.
‘Let's just get to work on this.' Charlotte said and Lizzy snapped to attention.
They went over the play list, the songs they wanted to rehearse and which ones they didn't feel would work. It was two hours later and Lizzy was overtired and exhausted. Charlotte took her leave and Jack barked her goodbye.
‘Hey can I borrow this Marc Anthony cd? I want to listen to it and see how it is.'
‘Sure I have an extra copy. So you can actually keep it. Well I'll see you later! Nite!'
And she was gone.
The weekend started out pretty well at least for Lizzy. She was sleeping in until noon while Jane was on the phone with their mother about her date, the dinner date, Charles, and suggestions of a wedding. Poor Jane. Subjected to hearing her mother rant on about her love life and she had to share with her mother. It was such a task.
Lizzy woke around ten and padded into the living room where Jane was still on the phone with her mother. Lizzy grinned and went to the kitchen. She could hear Jane trying to wrap the call up to talk to Lizzy, but it didn't seem to go too well.
‘Yes mom I know...no I know...right...well why don't I-...no no mom I won't. No! You can't be serious. I won't do it! Mother stop it please! I'm going now mom. Yes...I have to do some cleaning and get a few errands done. Yes...yes...(sigh) yes...okay I will. No I will call him but I'm not going to do that. Goodbye mom. ‘ Click.
Jane sighed and then let out a frustrated laugh.
‘I love her Lizzy, but she can drive me wild sometimes...as much as I am patient with her.'
‘What does she want you to do?' Lizzy asked as she popped some bread into the toaster.
‘She wants me to invite Charles's sister over for dinner with us and I won't do it. Caroline is sweet but I don't think she needs to be subjected to mom.'
‘Might do her some good' Lizzy mumbled under her breath.
‘Oh! I took the liberty of taking Jack out this morning and giving him his breakfast. Since you were sleeping and all I didn't have the heart to wake you.'
Lizzy thanked her and asked about last night.
‘It was wonderful. We had Chinese and then watched some movies on tv. Very relaxing evening.'
Lizzy smiled and buttered her toast. She sat at the dining room table and Jane joined her with her cup of coffee.
‘What are your plans for today?' Jane asked softly.
Lizzy shrugged.
‘Well would you like to come shopping with me at the grocery store and help me get some food and drinks? I also need to stop by Target to look for some bins.'
‘Sure Jane. I'd love to go with you. Let me just finish my breakfast and get ready.'
The day progressed mildly well for both girls. They filled up their kitchen with food and drink, Jane got the bins she was looking for and all seemed well. By the end of the day, the girls had decided to have pizza delivered and watch a movie.
By the time eleven pm rolled around, both girls were tired enough to go to bed. As Lizzy put her pajamas on her phone rang.
‘Hello?'
‘Lizzy it's Will. I hope I didn't catch you in bed asleep?'
‘Not quite but fairly close. I was just about to go to bed. What's wrong? You sound worried.'
Lizzy's brow furrowed as she tried to understand him.
‘Lizzy I'm not going to be able to come home like I planned. My sister has run into some trouble in Africa and I need to assist her there. I didn't want to alarm you but I wanted to let you know that I'm sorry for having to break our plans coming this week.'
‘Oh Will is everything okay? Is she hurt?' Lizzy's voice expressed her concern and Will almost smiled at the sound of her.
‘Yes she's fine in health, but something uh...from the...past has come back. It's rather complicated really. I just need to get to her. She called me up earlier this afternoon and told me that she needed me to pick her up. She didn't think she would be able to fly home with the others due to her condition.'
‘Condition?'
‘Uh yes...' Will took a sigh in and let it out slowly. He wasn't sure what to tell her. Except he knew the truth wasn't the answer. Not yet at least.
‘Lizzy, I can't relay the particulars. At least not right now anyway. Just know that she is fine...I am fine...I should be back soon though.'
Silence filled up on both ends. Lizzy felt saddened by the news but her heart went out to his sister in hopes of her feeling better soon. Will was broken not to see Lizzy as soon as they both had planned, but his sister needed him. More than ever it seemed and now he had to tend to her.
‘I understand Will. Go...go to her and give me a call when you get the chance. Please be careful though.'
Will's heart started to swell at her concern and he promised to her that he would be safe and call her when he returned to England.
Will woke the next morning on his private jet to Kenya and saw the sunlight peaking through the shade that was half down. He sat up and looked out the window thinking of the situation brought to his door yesterday afternoon. He was in a meeting with one of his clients regarding a contract they had been working on for better part of a week now. He was close to coming to an agreement, when his secretary came into the room and announced an emergency call on line four.
Will picked up the call and was surprised to find Georgie on the other line.
‘Will...' her small voice broke loose and sobs immediately took over the line.
Will felt nothing but pain and concern laced with worry when he heard her.
‘Georgie! What's the matter sweetie? Tell me dear tell me.'
‘Oh Will...it's awful! I can't believe what a fool I am and how I should of never of come here! I need you to come here right away.'
‘But sweetie you're leaving for home in a few days. What has happened to make you so upset? Tell me.'
A few more sobs entered the conversation and patiently Will waited for her to calm down. He looked over at his client who decidedly stepped out of the room and he found himself alone with the phone call.
‘He...he found me Will...he's come back...here to Kenya. ‘
No more words needed to be said. Will didn't need to hear anything else. He knew exactly who his sister meant and he was glad that she had called to let him know.
‘I'll leave right away love. Did he hurt you? What did he say? Where is he now?'
‘He didn't hurt me physically but he threatened me and told me to watch my back. He said that he would hurt the people we care most should we not listen to what he wants. I don't understand how he could of found me. Oh Will please come. I want to go home tomorrow but the group isn't leaving until Tuesday and I can't wait that long. Mrs. Annesely said she would let me go home, but she can't get me a flight out any earlier.'
‘Where is he now Georgie?'
She paused.
‘Will...he left through the crowds of the camp. I don't know where he could be. I only saw him this morning. He came...he came...' Tearful sobs were heard and Will knew she could speak no more of it.
‘Okay sweetie...it's okay. I'll finish up my meeting here and while I do that, I'll have the jet readied and my luggage. Stay with your group Georgie! I will call you when I get there.'
‘Okay Will...thank you.'
‘Love you sweetie.'
‘Love you too Will.'
Immediately, Will called his jet to be fueled and ready within a couple hours, he called his apartment to have his luggage ready and then he quickly finished the contract meeting and set off for the airport.
On his way, he called Lizzy. Before the meeting this morning he was looking forward to coming home the following Thursday to see Lizzy and spend time with her. Now he had to escape those thoughts and think of longer amounts of time before he would see her. He thanked God for technology and to be able to call her at least. He did not think he would be so long away from her. But then again, his sister needed him desperately and he was flying to get her and go home to London.
Will was shaken from his thoughts by the attendant giving him his coffee and buttered toast with jam for his breakfast.
‘The captain says we should arrive in Kenya in about an hour.'
‘Thank you Doris.'
Will picked up the plane phone and made some calls to his lawyers and a private investigator. He needed to find him before any more damage was done.
Lizzy woke up Sunday morning to Jack licking her cheek. She didn't expect to feel ready to wake up so soon, being it was only nine am but she felt energized for activity.
‘Yes baby...I'm up.' And with a click, her tv was on with the morning weather report. Being a sunny and somewhat warm day, Lizzy was so energized she decided on a run throughout the apartment complex parking lots and then to the park that was nearby.
Jack happily accompanied her and they set off, leaving Jane still asleep in her bed.
Lizzy was glad to be out in the sunshine and as she warmed up she zipped her jacket closed and secured Jack's leash before breaking into a light jog.
‘Oh Jack...isn't it...a...beautiful...day? I can't wait...until summer...is here...although...I love fall the ...best....'
Jack seemed to be happy to be out and getting exercise and to Lizzy he didn't seemed all too interested in her part of conversation.
They jogged into a run and kept going for most of the length of the park that secluded a lake. By the time they reached a quarter mile to the end of the perimeter, Lizzy slowed the two of them down into a brisk walk to cool down. Here she thought of Will and his sister.
‘I only hope that she is not in immediate danger and that whatever it is...will soon be resolved and she will be okay again.'
Will stepped off the plane ready to search for his sister at the student camp and more relieved to hear that his lawyers were working on the case that seemed to breach. As he reached his hired car, he quickly dialed his sister's number and waited for her to receive the call.
‘Ello?'
‘Georgie...it's Will.'
‘Ello Will. Have you just arrived then?'
‘Yes...I'm on my way now to the campsite. Would you be able to wait for me at the gate?'
‘No Will...I'll be at the main tent. The gate knows to let you in and the main tent is on the left side of the camp. You can't miss it. I'll be in there.'
‘Right. I shouldn't be more than twenty minutes then love. Just stay put. Love you.'
And he clicked off. He felt better now that he was on his way to her. To save her, albeit much later and after the danger she was in.
Twenty minutes went by and he found himself nearing the gate of the campsite.
‘Sir, your name and business?' The guard asked sharply to Will.
‘Willam Darcy to receive Georgianna Darcy.'
The guard read his clipboard of notes and nodded to let him through. Will's driver drove him to the main tent and Will got out.
Inside he looked around and found many tables lined up with students talking, writing, studying, debating, and reading. He looked to the middle of the room where a table of four girls were silently reading and found his sister.
Head bent down and nose near her book, Georgie was throwing herself into her book to rid her feelings of disgust, despair, and hurt. Will quickly approached her and lightly tapped her shoulder. She jumped at his touch with her hand to her heart and a squeal seeping from her voice.
‘Will! How you startled me. Oh goodness! I'm so glad you're here.' And she bounded up to him to brace him with a hug. Will held her for a moment and then stood back to check the sight of her.
At arms length, he studied her. She was much shorter than her brother who was standing at a tall six foot two and she only at five foot six. Her frame was slender and small, but her eyes were dark brown and her light angel blonde hair pulled back out of her face in a binder. She didn't look hurt except inside she was and he could tell from the betrayal of her pout that hung on her petite pink lips.
She lowered her head and then wriggled out of his grasp a bit to grab her books. She said goodbye to her friends and said she would see them in a few days. The girls looked up and agreed and then went back to their reading.
Both brother and sister did not speak until they exited the main tent. Georgie turned to the left slightly and walked with Will in close tow.
‘Will I'm so glad you've came. I just need to head to my tent and grabbed my belongings and then we can go right? I am so sad to be leaving Africa, but I need to go home. I don't want to be here another minute should he come back again.'
‘Georgie, what exactly happened? You haven't told me the whole story.' Will said as he kept up with his sister who rapidly walked towards a cluster of tents across the south part of the campsite.
‘Yesterday morning I was finishing my breakfast and when I was leaving the mess tent (Bye Brittney...I'll call you next week), I left Penny and Amy to join up with my study group in one of the study tents. We were suppose to go to a local village and take notes on the local life. We boarded the bus and when we got there we went in groups of two. Well John was my partner and while we were (Bye Sam! See you next week!) when we were there, I saw a local merchant that I wanted to see for a souvenir. Well I went in and I looked around and then when I was about to pick up a cool looking pot, I heard a voice.' Here Georgie stopped and turned around. Will saw her eyes brimming with tears ready to fall.
‘His voice is not hard to forget. He softly told me hello and wondered why I was in Kenya. I asked him the same thing and he said that he was here on business. To be certain, business regarding me and you. I told him I didn't know what he was talking about and hushed the fact that he isn't supposed to be within 700 feet of me. Not even that but he was supposed to be in prison! I asked how he got out and he told me that he has friends within the legal system. Then he told me to shut up and listen to him. (Here the tears started to spill) Will...he told me that I wasn't very nice to tattle on him for his actions to me. That he was doing what I told him to do and that I need to pay for what I had done...that I needed to give him back what I took from him which was money and...oh Will...he touched me...he touched me on my arms and kissed me...it was disgusting! I...I...I'm so scared...I need him to be put away...I don't...I don't know how he found me...'
Her tears rushed her into sobbing and before Will knew it, Georgie was in his arms being soothed by the sound of her brother's voice calmly telling her that she would be okay and that he would find him and take care of the situation.
‘Darling Georgie...I will not rest until I find him. I have called my lawyers and a private investigator and we are searching for him. I have the right people on the case. I don't understand how he got to you or better yet how he got out, but he will be put away for good. I promise you love. I promise you.'
They stood this way for several moments and once her sobs had ceased into a quiet whimper, Will let go and held her hands. She looked up at him and smiled weakly.
‘I promise Georgie. Now let's get your things and take you home. The jet will be ready when we get there.'
Nodding and turning towards her tent, she walked the short distance and grabbed her things. Will took her duffel bag and sleeping bag and Georgie grabbed her backpack and other totes she brought with her.
They packed the car and got in. Will checked Georgie out with Mrs. Annesley and then they were off for the airport.
‘How long do you think it will take Will? I hope not very long. ‘
Will shook his head.
‘I don't think so either, but we must be patient. I have a few meetings I'll have to attend in a couple weeks and I need to go back to Meryton for a few meetings. If you'd like you can join me. Charles is there and everyone else. Just let me know darling.'
‘I have a classes to attend until May Will and then we have our summer gathering at Pemberley. Maybe I could spend spring break in Meryton? I'll have to see.'
Silence evaded them until they boarded the jet and once settled, Georgie had fallen asleep.
Will was glad to have Georgie with him again and happy to see her safe by his side. Now all he needed to do was find the man that hurt her again. Somehow...someway he knew it needed to be done...he just had to find the man.
‘Jane! We're home!'
Lizzy called from the front door and let Jack off his leash. The two of them were sweaty, tired, and happy to have gone out for a wonderful morning run. Jane walked into the hallway and saw Lizzy red from exertion. Jack barked and went to his water dish in the kitchen.
‘Well how was your run? You haven't done that in a while have you?'
‘No Jane...I haven't...but it was great! I think I might do that more often instead of working so late. Have you had breakfast?'
Jane shook her head and then turned towards the kitchen.
‘I decided to sleep in this morning and skip church. I didn't feel like doing much of anything except relaxing around home. What would you like to eat? Waffles? Eggs on toast? Oatmeal?' Jane had a smirk on her face, knowing all too well that Lizzy despised oatmeal.
‘Eggs on toast is fine and yuck to oatmeal. I'm going to take a shower and then I'll set the table.'
After a quick cold shower, Lizzy entered the kitchen finding Jane almost ready with breakfast.
‘Instead of eating at the table, how about we eat outside. It's rather warm for a March morning so I thought it would be different.'
‘Good idea Jane. I'll get us set.'
Once the sisters settled themselves for a good breakfast, Jane asked about the person who called last night.
‘Oh...it was Will.'
‘Will? Well what could he have to say so late?'
‘I guess he won't be coming home as planned later this week. His sister ran into a bit of trouble in Africa so he needed to pick her up and take her back to London. I wasn't able to get much detail from him besides that.'
Jane's faced betrayed her concern and worry.
‘She's not ill is she?'
Lizzy shook her head as she took a bite of her bacon.
‘No he said her health was fine in that regards. But I think it's something else. I'm not sure what, but it's something serious I imagine.'
‘Do you think Charles would know? I mean they are best friends.' Jane sipped her tea and looked to Lizzy for an answer.
She could only shrug.
‘Who knows. He might just know what we do or he might know more. I won't venture into a subject that I might not be welcome in, however, I can't say I'm not concerned.'
Jane only nodded. Lizzy was not one to fret over something she knew hardly of and as much as she liked Will and was concerned for him and his family, she knew that it would not help the situation if she even tried to worry, concern, or over analyze the situation.
After breakfast, the two decided to watch a movie and make cookies. By the start of the afternoon, laughter filled the apartment and Jack pouncing around trying to get a bit of cookie. Lizzy and Jane were decorating their cookies and watching the end of Must Love Dogs when the house phone rang.
‘Hello?' Jane answered and then smiled at the sound of the person's voice on the other end.
‘Hi Charles! How are you?'
‘Fine Jane. I was wondering if you and Lizzy would like to have lunch with me and then a late dinner after a stroll in town?'
Jane confirmed with Lizzy the plans were fine and after making the time to meet at the apartment within an hour, the girls finished their cookies, dressed and were ready a few minutes before Charles came to the door.
At lunch at a local seafood restaurant located on the pier of the town's river, Lizzy came out with a question to Charles should he of heard anything from Will.
‘Yeah he called me this morning to let me know that he would be out for a while. Seems that Georgie had a scare from a lost acquaintance of sorts. Guess he'll be gone for another week if not two more. Shame really. I was hoping to go to a tennis tournament with him and the three of us next weekend. Just a local dig.'
Lizzy pondered the words of ‘ scare from a lost acquaintance.' What would that mean? Who would scare here? And what type of scare is it?
Will and Georgie finally settled in the London flat that Will had when he had business affairs in London. Georgie had her own flat in Cambridge, but decided to take a few days off from school to find out what to do and stay with Will.
By the time the two arrived, Georgie decided to eat a light supper and then study a bit while Will called Charles to let him know he was safe in London.
‘Hello?'
‘Charles it's Will. I wanted to let you know that we have arrived at my flat in London. How goes it with you there?'
‘Ahh Will! Glad to hear that! The ladies and I were worried about you. We're fine here. Just about to have lunch. A bit late over there for you isn't it? Hope you can get some good rest. Any news on what your plans are from here on out?'
‘Uh...no. I haven't decided what to do next. I have a meeting with someone in the morning to determine why this happened at least on the prison's end. Are you with Jane?'
‘Yes! Jane and Lizzy. I thought I would treat them to some lunch and then who knows what later. ‘
‘Lizzy is with? Can I speak to her?'
‘Sure...Lizzy..it's Will.'
‘Hello?'
‘Lizzy, hi. I just wanted to let Charles know that I'm in London safely. I was about to call you and talk to you a bit but finding out that you are with him makes it easier. How was your morning?'
‘Good! Very good. Just had a run, made some cookies with Jane and am now out with Charles. I hope you're sister is doing better.'
‘Yes thank you she is. She is about to grab a bite to eat and then probably settle for the night. It's been a tiring day. I hope you're not too upset for me not being able to make it home. It's just that...well...Georgie is in a fragile state right now being that a certain ex if you will has made an abrupt return and it's difficult for her to cope with him being the situation as it was in the past. But anyways...I just hope you're not upset.'
‘No no! Quite the opposite. I'm worried about you and her. Granted I've never met her but I'm concerned since she isn't herself apparently. That's never good. Jane and I sincerely hope that things work out as you wish them to. Give our regards to your sister Will. Call me later if you can.'
‘I will Lizzy and thank you...both of you. Have a good day.'
‘Good night Will.'
Will put the receiver on the phone set and sat in silence for a moment.
‘I will find you...I will. And when I do...you will never hurt her or anyone close to me again....never.'
The phone rang and Will answered.
‘Yes.' He answered curtly.
‘Mr. Darcy? This is P.I. Marsh. Sir, I have a trail on him.'
‘Really?'
‘Yes sir. Seems he escaped prison last week and the notifications were hush hush until they could get a tail. But now that they have found one they are releasing more information to me and your lawyers. I believe we may be able to find him within the next few weeks should he be fresh enough to keep his tracks open as they have been.'
‘Good good...let me know how you progress.'
After a moment, Will called his top lawyer, Mr. Brandson.
‘Brandson.'
‘Frank it's Will Darcy.'
‘Ahh Will...yes...I just got an email on the release of the prison break. Seems that it wasn't just the fellow we are looking for...seems he had help.'
‘Really? Who?'
‘Hmm...a Jorge Jenkins and a Bobby Fallington. Both con artists in the way of computer science and accounting. One specializes out of Turkey and the other out of New York. Interesting...'
‘What? What is?'
‘Seems that your man here is quite the con artist himself. Seems he has help from outside. But I don't have the details.'
‘Right...well keep me posted.'
‘I will sir. By the way...is Georgie okay?'
‘Yes she is for now...a bit shook up but hardly unpardonable being the circumstances that lead up to this. I just hope to resolve the issue quietly and without attention.'
‘Believe me Will. We all do. It was hard to lock him up the first time. The second time should be much easier and more sedate.'
‘Let's hope so. Send me the email of release you have and I'll get back to you in the morning.'
‘Sure. Night Darcy.'
Within a matter of moments, Will opened the case file Frank sent over.
‘Smart bas***d you are...but not smart enough.'
Will printed the file and set it on his desk. After reading it over and over, he finally availed sleep and went to bed.
His mind was only on one person this night. And that was none other than George Wickham.
Georgie woke up Monday morning to the smell of coffee. She padded to the kitchen to see her brother scrambling eggs in a bowl and adding a bit of cheese.
‘Morning Will.'
Will looked up from the bowl and smiled.
‘Morning sweetie. Did you sleep well?'
Georgie nodded and placed herself on one of the barstools at the counter.
‘Good...glad to hear it. Now I have spoken with my private investigator, Marsh, who says that he is on the trail of Wickham and is following fresh tracks. Seems that George isn't covering up as well as he should. I think he may of stayed in Kenya after approaching you but not for long. ‘
‘Do you think he would of followed us here? Waited for you to come to me and then go from there?'
Will paused and thought about the whole situation. He didn't know what George was after but yet he did have his hunches. Usually with George it was money. Selfishly he would spend the money he borrowed from others and never pay them back. Will had seen this happen many times and instead of picking him up, he let George fall. Hoping that he would learn his lesson. But it was all for naught.
‘Will? Will...'
‘Sorry sweetie. Let me make this batch of eggs for you and then I'll let you rest. I have to look over a few things this morning.'
After he settled Georgie in with her breakfast, Will went to his den.
Two years ago...two years ago! It was so simple and yet so cunning on his part. Never had it entered his mind that George would partake in hurting his sister just for money and for seeing Will suffer a bit. Before Will knew it he was thinking of the past so vividly.
He was upset that he escaped prison, that he found Georgie, and that he wasn't able to track him down the way he wanted. His mind was reeling with possibilities and with worry. However, he knew that he needed to stay calm and show no emotion of worry, anger, or pain to Georgie. He needed to be strong for her.
‘Some part of me would rather be dealing with Caroline than this.' He thought as he opened his email files and created a new message.
When he finished, he shut his computer down and joined Georgie who was in the living room studying.
Lizzy found the Monday morning grind hard to concentrate on. She was thinking more about Caroline's performance that was interestingly enough rising in good productivity. To Lizzy, it was interesting to find that Caroline was more diligent in her work and not as showy in her personal life.
‘Lizzy, here is my morning report for the inventory of my clients. I also hope you see that I have worked on some of Krista's inventory while she was out the last few days. Hope that's alright?' she said with a sort of sarcastic flare.
Lizzy numbly took her report and thumbed through it.
‘Sure Caroline. It looks great. Could you finish your mail inventory today then? I need to have us caught up by the afternoon.'
Caroline gave her a pert smile and a slight bob of her head. Even though Caroline was working well, did not mean she was nice. She was civil as she knew how to be and that border-lined with just plain mean.
Lizzy rolled her eyes.
‘At least that hasn't changed.' She thought.
By the mid afternoon, everyone was caught up to speed and Lizzy was ready to report to John. Before she left for her meeting, her phone rang.
‘Dresden Soultions, Lizzy speaking.'
‘Lizzy...it's Will.'
‘Will? Hi, how are you?'
‘Better Lizzy, better. Say I wanted to let you know that I'm planning on flying into Meryton in two weeks. So I was wondering if our plans could stay on only for a different day.'
Lizzy smiled broadly.
‘Of course then can. I'll have everything ready. Just let me know the night you want to get together.'
‘Good. Hope work is going okay then?'
‘Yes...except...well...'
‘What? What is it? Something wrong?'
‘No...not entirely. It's just...' Lizzy covered her mouth with her hand so that no one could hear her.
‘Caroline has been working. Very hard and well...it's just surprising.'
Will laughed.
‘Oh Lizzy...Caroline may be a whiny duck at times and dress horribly, but she is a hard worker. She does know her stuff, well...work related at least...in some things maybe. Anyways, it doesn't surprise me in the least. Except what would surprise me is that she would be nice about anything. With Caroline, she always has to have her way. Sometimes it works, but rarely does it ever.'
‘Right. Well I'll have to let you go. Have a meeting with John. Take care Will.'
‘You too Lizzy. I'll call you later.'
Later that night, Lizzy found herself thinking about Caroline of all people.
If I was engaged to someone like Will and paraded around like her, I would expect the axe. But for her she must of thought she deserves him. Hmm...
‘Lizzy?'
Lizzy looked up and saw Jane standing the doorway of Lizzy's room.
‘Is something the matter?'
Lizzy smiled and shook her head.
‘Not exactly Jane. I just...I've been thinking about Caroline. I don't understand how she could be taking everything so well. I mean...she doesn't know about Will and I and she doesn't seem upset at all at the fact that Will broke up with her. Wouldn't you be upset if you were engaged and the man you thought you were going to marry just up and dumps you?'
Jane tried to smile but instead moved towards the bed to sit next to her sister. Jane hadn't always been thinking about Lizzy's situation, however, in the terms of Caroline she had heard of her pleasantness from Charles since the break up.
‘Well...I have to admit from what I've heard she has been pleasant but that doesn't mean she's not hurt. Maybe what Will said has sunk in and she is trying to be a better person.'
Lizzy tried not to laugh.
‘Well I heard from Charles that she has been going out with her sister and shopping mostly on the weekends but that some nights she stays home. I don't think she's changed in character but maybe she gets the point. I mean...she has had a long relationship with Will than we have known of him.'
Lizzy knew Jane was right. But she couldn't stop thinking about how Caroline's actions were bothering her. It just didn't seem normal.
Meanwhile, Caroline was at home for the night reading her new magazine of Cosmo that came in the mail. Charles found her in the t.v. room lounging in her Juicy Coture suit.
‘Are you planning on staying in tonight?' Charles asked almost sardonically. Caroline's mood was somber these past couple weeks and Charles was becoming annoyed yet worried.
Caroline slowly looked up from her magazine and took in the view of her brother.
‘Why yes Charles I had planned on staying in tonight. Does that bother you? Is sweet Jane coming over tonight? Would you like me to leave?'
Charles let out a sigh as he looked into Caroline's eyes. They were upset with raw emotion. Charles didn't understand. It was as if Caroline didn't care about the break-up yet she was scorned for being single. Somehow this wasn't what Charles had in mind.
‘Carrie, what's wrong? You have been acting so strange these last couple weeks that I don't know how to make you out.'
‘Why would something be wrong Charles?' She slowly drawled out in a high society aire.
Charles shrugged impatiently before replying.
‘I don't know Carrie...why don't you tell me? I'm asking you here and instead of an answer you're just being rude.'
Caroline flipped a page, looked it over, then shut it close. Her eyes then darted to Charles with a look of anger and almost jealousy.
‘If you must know I'm fine. Just because the man of my life...the love of my life has dumped me and left me for the dogs does not mean that I can't be okay on my own.'
Charles was tempted to roll his eyes at the sound of the reason for Caroline's behavior but decided against it. Instead he motioned to come into the room more and stood a few feet away from his sister. He knew it had something to do with Will...it always did with Caroline.
‘Ahh...well Carrie...I hate to put it blunt but Will doesn't love you. You have to respect his decision. You two have tried a relationship many times before hand and it never seems to work out. I think this has all happened for the best. Can't you see that? The world does not revolve around William Darcy. He's a great guy and my best friend but I can't say that I'm lining up to be just like him or wishing and praying to have what he has. I'm happy as me and you should be happy that you're you and that you're not in a relationship that would make you miserable.'
Caroline during the whole speech was looking away from Charles.
‘You know...being that it was a very touching speech and all...I still don't think you understand. I love Will. I did everything for him. We supported each other and now I don't have anything to fall back on. As much as I hang out with Louisa and do the things I used to do, I just don't care about anything but him. I think about him constantly! He won't return my calls or my emails or even keep the sorry flowers I sent. They were beautiful by the way...lovely orange lilies in a beautiful orange vase with dark lime green swirls in it...simply ravishing. But Charles you seem not to understand. You have it so wonderful with perfect Jane and I sit here trying to figure out a way to get Will back.'
Warning bells rang throughout Charles's head. He thought his sister was making progress but then it hit him. She was laying low trying to figure out a way to get him back. Uh oh! He couldn't believe he missed it! Memories from years ago when they had dated flooded his brain. After Will would break up with Caroline, she would go into a slump and it seemed as if she was okay with his decision, but in reality she was waiting for him to realize the mistake he made and chase after her. She never failed to think this twisted stuff up and as many times as Charles tried to talk her out of it, she wouldn't listen.
This time Charles was standing firm on not doing anything. He would let her fall once and for all without warning. He had a feeling that should things go well with Will and Lizzy, that this would definitely get her goose and she would realize that it was truly over. However he always cared and loved her, he was frustrated at how she was so determined to go after the wrong things.
‘Caroline, I won't stop you in anything you do, but I heed you warning. Will is a free man from you in terms of an engagement and you are free to see whomever you want. So why not go for someone who will actually love you back? I'm sure Will would understand and I know he wishes the best for you. Just don't do anything to hurt your friendship with him at least.'
‘Thank you so much for your touching endearment Charles, but I think I can handle myself. Don't worry about Will and I. He will be back before you know it.'
Charles shook his head and gave a sympathetic smile to Caroline and then left to call Jane. He wasn't going to stand in her way unless it was to protect Will, Lizzy, or Jane.
Will woke up from his nap on the sofa and went into the kitchen. He was a wreck. He hardly got any work done as his concentration was ruined with thoughts of Wickham. He hated that it consumed him. He wanted it to be all over. So far nothing was found on him. He was still out there...lurking wherever he was. Will had a feeling that he was waiting. Waiting for him to make a move that George could pounce on. He vowed he wouldn't make any mistakes while he was able to stay a step ahead. But how?
‘Will? I'm ready to go.'
Will looked up and saw Georgie looking curiously at him. He nodded and grabbed his keys and they set off.
Today Georgie was going to her place in Cambridge to settle in for classes. She felt better than Will did about her going back. She knew that at school she would have her friends to support her and her professors to watch out for her. She was ready. For Will however, he was unsettled. He wanted the matter to be done with. He didn't want his sister to be in any danger.
Georgie had a talk with Will to make sure that he understood that she was ready to go back to school and wanted to attend to her studies without delay.
Will could hardly refuse her but with reluctance he agreed after he expressed his concerns.
Now he was about to drive her back to her apartment and make sure she was settled before returning back to his place here in London for a few nights and then traveling back home to Virginia.
‘Will? Will are you ready yet?'
Will turned around from the sink to find Georgie all ready to go.
Nodding, he answered,
‘Yes I am. I just need my keys.'
‘Here there are. Oh and Lizzy called you earlier. Told her you were having a nap and that you would call her back once you woke. Do you mind calling her later?'
‘No not all. Thanks for the message though. Did you speak with her at all?'
‘Only a moment. She caught me getting the laundry done. She's such a sweet girl Will. I hope that she will make you happy as you have been doing with her. She invited me to come out sometime when I was free. I hope you don't mind but I invited her to come to Pemberley this summer should she be able to. I've had such a wonderful time getting to know her and talk to her. You did real well with her better than Caroline I must say.'
Will smiled and took his sister's hand. In the beginning of the past two weeks, Will would call Lizzy but be preoccupied with Wickham out there in the world roaming around. He would try so hard to listen to her about her work, the pub and her singing, her outings with Jane and how she would join Charles and Jane whenever they invited her to keep her busy and happy. But he would only give her one word responses and by the fourth night, Lizzy let him know that it was bothering her.
‘Will! Are you even listening to me?' Lizzy started as she got no answer from when she asked about his day.
‘Uh...oh sorry Lizzy. I really am...I've just been...uh...well distracted with this...situation.'
Lizzy let out a breath.
‘Will...I know we haven't known each other exactly very long, but I feel I'm getting to know you pretty well and you're not listening to me. You see off in another realm giving me hmms, uh-huhs, and yeps every time you seem necessary. I bet you didn't even register the bit about Charles wanting me to let you know to call him. What's going on with you?'
Here Will let out a sigh. She was right. He wasn't trying hard enough and instead letting this situation bother him more than it should.
‘I'm sorry Lizzy. I guess...this situation is getting a bit out of hand in my mind. I don't know how to solve it and I'm not getting very far with it. But I do care about you and I do want to know everything that is going on with you.'
‘Do you want to talk about it with me?'
Will let out a huff and paused.
‘Yes and no. The only reason I say that is because it's...complicated. It involves my sister and I just...I don't want to validate a breech of trust between her and I.'
‘You've told me a bit about her Will. She seems very sweet. Is she there with you now?'
‘Yes she is and thank you. She is umm...studying at the moment. Wants to get caught up on some of her work before she goes back.'
‘Tell her I say hello will you? I would love to talk to her sometime, should she want to speak with me.'
Will felt his mouth turn up a bright smile. Lizzy wanted to know about his family. She wanted to get to know someone dear to him.
‘I'll tell her. Thank you Lizzy. I also...oh Lizzy...let me try to explain things...'
‘Will don't. It's okay. When you're ready you can tell me. For now let us try to get you relaxed and your mind off of preoccupation. Tell me about your college days with Charles. He told me a few things about you when you two would play soccer together. Tell me more will you?'
Lizzy was able to finally get rein on his mind to track it to good thoughts and pleasure without actually being there with him. Soon she was talking to Georgie about all sorts of subjects. School, America and England, Will, and just plain life.
Their bond grew fast and instantly they were good friends. Will was eager to see Lizzy again to thank her for brightening her sister and his own life since the rough patch befell them.
Will saw his sister home and once he was assured of her safety and comfort, took his leave.
On the way back to his flat, he decided that tomorrow he would fly home and try to sort out the mess of Wickham from Virginia and stay close to Lizzy.
Lizzy found herself alone when the weekend came two weeks after Will called her to tell her he wouldn't be home. She was hoping that he would be coming home this week instead of calling to tell her he would still be detained. She was finding herself very happy with how their conversations were going every day when they spoke. She was being taken care of by Jane and Charles whose relationship was becoming stronger each and every day. She at first felt like a third wheel, but Charles found a strong attachment with Lizzy and himself. Like a sisterly and brotherly bond that he never had with his two sisters or brother-in-law. He found her exciting, funny, thoughtful, and very caring. He could see more and more every time they hung out or talked how much Jane loved her so. She would take care of Jane and Jane took care of Lizzy. Their sisterly bond was very admirable to Charles. He took it upon himself to see her happy with Will away.
Lizzy found work getting better but intense. She was able to concentrate on her tasks easier and without having to deal with Caroline so much since the inventory was increasing.
At night, she wasn't tired anymore and working herself to the bone. Instead, Jane insisted she come home straight away and spend time with her and Charles. Their father would join them for their weekly dinners and found Lizzy in a much happy mood than from the previous weeks.
Today, Lizzy was cleaning the apartment. She requested time alone to clean while Charles had wanted to take Jane sailing in his sailboat on the Potomac. Lizzy loved to sail but thought it best to let the lovebirds alone.
After her morning run with Jack, she set out to clean right after. She popped in the cd Charlotte let her borrow, the Marc Anthony cd and set away with cleaning the bathrooms first.
By the time the mid afternoon came around, Lizzy was vacuuming the bedrooms and living room. She was stuck on the song ‘You Sang to Me'. Over and over she would play it and soon began to sing along. The words leapt at her heart and electrocuted her soul into wanting to soar the skies.
It wasn't long until she was belting out the tune and playing it loudly throughout the apartment while vacuuming. She was so enthralled that she couldn't hear the door bell ringing.
Jack began to bark and soon Lizzy stopped her vacuuming, turned the cd player down and then registered the sound of the door bell.
‘Coming!'
Opening the door, she let out a giggle seeing Will on the other side with a huge grin on his face.
‘Will!! You're here!'
All before they could check themselves, Lizzy was hugging him with her thighs around his waist and kissing his cheek. Will immediately put his arms around her waist and laughed at the welcome.
‘Surprise! I thought I would head straight over from the airport to see you. I couldn't wait.'
‘Oh Will! I'm so happy to see you. Oh! But look at me. I've been working on the place all day and in my running clothes. I must look awful.'
Will took in her appearance with a smile. She was wearing her Nike running shoes, blue yoga pants and a huge white t-shirt that she looked to be nearly swimming in. Her hair was tied up in a messy ponytail and whisps and hair were about her face and neck that escaped her band. Her face was flushed and red from working and pouncing on him. To Will she looked brilliant.
‘Nonsense...you are beautiful. And here....these are for you!'
Lizzy saw in his hands a bouquet of white daisies just springing out a cheerful hello.
‘Oh Will! Thank you! Oh they're lovely. Let me get them in some water...please make yourself comfortable.'
Jack wagged his tail and soon stopped his barking (as he was happy to see Will too or anybody for that matter) and jumped onto Will's legs for attention.
‘Hello there Jack. Been a good boy I hope for Lizzy? Yes that's a good boy you silly pup.'
‘Come into the kitchen. You want a drink or anything?' Lizzy called from the room.
‘Yes thank you. Water's fine.'
Lizzy produced a large glass of water for him to drink and a can of diet coke for herself.
‘So you're back. I'm so happy and how was Georgie when you left?'
‘Great. Seemed better happy at school than my place. It was tough for both of us, but it got better. By the way, she told me that she invited you to Pemberley this summer. I was rather hoping to invite you myself, but she beat me to it. Would you come? Please?'
Lizzy looked down at her drink and smiled.
‘I told her what I'm telling you. I will have to see about my schedule but I would love to come. Especially to meet her. I wish that she would come here too being that she hasn't been to the States in a long time.'
‘Yeah...it's been a while for her. But I'm sure we can work something out. Are you hungry? I haven't eaten yet and it may seem that you haven't either.'
Lizzy shook her head.
‘I haven't eaten since breakfast you're right. Want to grab a late lunch?'
‘Those were my intentions.'
‘Just let me change into something suitable and we can go.'
Fifteen minutes later, Lizzy and Will left the apartment and Jack, to get some lunch.
‘So...how was you're flight?' Lizzy asked while they waited for their food.
‘Long, tiring, and boring. I slept pretty much the whole way over. On my way here from New York, I tried to do some work, but was too excited to see you.'
Lizzy smiled and played with her straw.
‘I'm glad to see you. I was hoping you would be home this week. I didn't expect you would be home this weekend.'
‘I'm glad to be home too. I was going to stay but decided that I needed to be near you. I wanted to see you again. That reminds me...Lizzy...I want to thank you for being so warm and nice to my sister. She has improved and is happier now being at school. You have given her more confidence and she is...well...thank you.'
‘Oh Will...it was nothing. I was happy to talk to her. She and I are becoming good friends. She is very bright and a wonderful girl. You have done a super job with her. She tells me that you have taken care of her since your parents' death.'
‘Uh...yeah...yeah I have. My cousin, Richard and I are her guardians. So it was only naturally that...'
Lizzy placed her hand over his own and gave it a comforting squeeze.
No words were needed and therefore none were spoken.
Before long their lunch had arrived and they were more intent upon their food than any conversation.
After their meal, Will got a call from Charles.
‘Hey Charles.'
‘Will! I just wanted to see how you were doing. It's been a few days so I thought I'd call you.'
‘Well I'm glad you did. I'm just having some lunch with Lizzy.'
‘Lizzy?! You mean...you're in town then? Back from London? That's brilliant!'
‘Yes Charles I'm quite happy to be back.'
‘Well we're all glad to hear you're back.'
Will heard Charles mention to Jane of his arrival and soon a small conversation was between them.
‘Say Will, how about you and Lizzy come over to my place for some light dinner?'
‘Will Caroline be there?'
Charles slightly groaned.
‘Uh...I didn't think about that. I bet she probably will be.'
‘I've got a better idea Charles. How about you two meet us at Lizzy and Jane's in oh say...an hour?' Will asked as he checked his watch. He looked at Lizzy who gave him a small smile and a curious look.
‘Uh...sure that'll work. Jane says that she wants to try a new recipe for a chicken dish. We're going to head to the store now and see you back at their place. Bye Will.'
‘Good. Bye Charles.'
He clicked off and took a sip of his water.
‘So...?' Lizzy began.
‘Jane's making us dinner tonight, however, I was hoping that later after dinner, you might want to come over to my place?'
Lizzy slightly blushed and then opened her mouth to speak.
‘Uh...Will...hmmm...'
‘You don't have to Lizzy. I wasn't trying to imply anything...I just thought that. ‘
‘No no Will...it's not that. I would love to go to your place. It's just a big step. I mean...I heard from Marianne that you don't have women taken to your place...ever. And since Caroline you hardly had even her over.'
‘Well that's true. I don't like people I'm uneasy with or people that I don't particularly like over at my house. But I like you Lizzy....quite a lot and since we are always around Jane and Charles...I just thought that since we'll be at your place along with them that we could afford them some privacy and I could show you my place. Don't worry though. I don't take offense and we can do it some other time. In fact, how about I make you dinner at my place on Tuesday night?'
Lizzy brightened by his understanding and his invitation and soon felt her head nodding in agreement.
Will and Lizzy enjoyed their last hour together by walking through a nearby park with their hands clasped together and light cool breeze blowing about their faces. Smiles were adorning them and they hardly needed to speak. Comfortable was the silence that embraced them.
They had completely circled the park and when checking the time on Will's watch, decided it was time to head back to ready for supper. Jane and Charles were already there unpacking the bags of groceries they had purchased.
Jane asked for Lizzy's help in the kitchen while Charles and Will caught up with each other's busy lives.
‘It's so good to have Will back isn't it Lizzy?'
Lizzy nodded in agreement. She was so thrilled that she was beaming. No words were needed from her. One look and it told all. Will was equally happy to be back and more importantly to be around Lizzy.
The time spent apart was painful and yearning in some aspects, however the phone call conversations helped ease the urges and helped their relationship grow stronger. Lizzy wouldn't of changed it for anything. She was quite happy with the way things were going and thought that it was a good break for them to be able to get to know more about one another instead of just jumping right in.
Will would agree. He was nervous at first about not being around to date her, but being able to talk to her on the phone, email her during the day and night and just plain right getting to know more about her, he felt at ease and when he saw her for the first time, no awkwardness was present and only a sense of home and completion was felt.
Lizzy and Jane joined the men while dinner was cooking and they all partook in a game of Pictionary. To Will's amazement and yet not at all surprised by Lizzy's talents that were forever shining through, he found her to be a skilled artist. At that moment, he noticed the art work on the walls of the girls' apartment. Most of them were drawings. He didn't realize that they were Lizzy's though. Not until now.
One especially caught his eye. It was quite large in fact, and hanging on the main wall of the dining room. It was a sketch of a tree with a light blue grayish sky and soft green grass. The amazing thing about the drawing was that it was in flowing lines. No hard sharp angles and points could be found. Instead it was all flowing swirls of different types to give it the look of a tree, grass and sky. Three basic colors were used, brown, green, and blue. It was beautiful actually. Very calming and serene to Will. He was swelling with pride when he realized it was her drawing and he could tell that from the signature at the bottom. Simple and plain but very Lizzy.
To say the least, Lizzy and Charles won. Will and Jane lost by many points, being that Jane was not a good drawer at all and Will, even though he was good with architecture, couldn't guess Jane's drawings in the least.
‘I'm so sorry Will. I've never had the art talent as Lizzy does. Most of her stuff is in a frame and mine in the trash. I'm better in the kitchen anyways.' She said as she was on her way into the kitchen.
‘No matter Jane. I think it was a fair game and we'll just have to beat them at a baking contest next.' He said with a smirk. Lizzy playful stuck her tongue out laughed.
Dinner was divine to them all. Roast chicken with a lemon herb curd sauce, almond honey glazed carrots, and wild rice were served and hastily accepted by all four. Desert consisted of chocolate ice cream and a warm caramel and hazelnut sauce that Lizzy thought would be so so in trying but turned out to be a favorite.
Charles and Jane had planned on staying in while Will wanted to stay with Lizzy alone. It was nearly 8 and while the four of them were settling down in the living room, Will casually asked if Lizzy would be interested in seeing a movie. Jane smiled and with her head nodded for her to go.
‘If we leave now we can catch an 8.30 showing I'm sure.' Lizzy said as she bounced off the couch and headed to her room to grab her fleece jacket.
‘Whichever works.' Will replied and gave Jane and Charles a wink.
‘Don't expect us back too early Jane. I've wanted to spend some time with Lizzy for a while now.' Will said somewhat surprised by his easiness with Jane.
She simply smiled and went into the kitchen to fetch Charles another cup of coffee and herself another bowl of ice cream.
Lizzy and Will soon left and Will helped her into his car. It was silent for most of the ride until he was closer to the theater.
‘Do you know of any movies out that you'd like to see?' Lizzy asked as he started to park his car in the parking lot.
‘No...I just thought a movie would be nice. Spend some time together as well as leave a certain couple alone.'
Lizzy smiled and nodded. She also blushed but hid it well from Will as she stepped out of his car. Will quickly came around to take her hand, as she had beaten him to opening the door, and pulled her closer to his side.
As they reached the theater entrance, they looked upon the movie selections and took all but two minutes to choose a drama film.
Will purchased their tickets and took them over to the concession stand.
‘Want anything?'
Lizzy bit her lip. Their dinner wasn't so long ago, but she loved movie theater food that she wanted just a little of everything.
‘I remember how you said that at movies you love the food, so I was wondering if you would like to get a small pop and popcorn and a candy to share. Something light but very good.' Will said as if he answered her thoughts.
She nodded and he also bought their snacks.
As they entered the theater where the show was playing, they saw a small gathering of people scattered about the room. Lizzy was leading to find seats and choose the middle row and the middle seats.
‘Have to have the best in the house.' She whispered to him and they sat down.
The movie wasn't starting for another ten minutes, so that gave them time to relax and chat.
‘Hey Lizzy...would you like to do something with me tomorrow? Perhaps have brunch with me?'
Lizzy was popping some popcorn into her mouth and looking down at their drink. Then a small smile crept upon her face and she gave Will a sideward glance.
‘Yes...I'd like that. ‘ She spoke slowly and softly. Will smiled and before they could continue with anything, the movie started.
Lizzy enjoyed the whole movie date. When the movie started, Will took her hand and never let go. His thumb would caress the back of her hand and her own thumb letting her know that he was there and enjoying his time with her. Lizzy could hardly concentrate on the movie but made herself do so. She smiled when she noticed that they would somehow bump each other's hands when reaching for more popcorn. She would find them brushing and touching each other's hands while reaching for the drink or candy. All in all it was a wonderful two hours.
When the movie ended, they discarded their cartons and headed for the exit. Will still holding Lizzy's hand, took her to his side and then let go of her hand to put his arm around her.
‘Did you like the movie?' He whispered in her ear.
Lizzy's face was warm from blushing and words could not be found so she nodded.
‘Good. I enjoyed it too. Should I take you home now?'
Lizzy didn't answer.
She was too busy thinking about her next move. Should she keep on with him or go home? She didn't want to go home but she didn't want to come in too late for Jane either.
Will asked her quietly again and was a bit nervous towards her response.
‘Oh...sorry Will, sure...you could drive me home.' She said lightly.
The drive back was comforting with Will's hand in hers and the sound of the still outdoors passing as Will drove them slowly back home. Lizzy was content, happy, and hoping for more dates like this in the future.
Will pulled into a parking space outside of her apartment and put the BMW in park. He then looked out the windshield and softly smiled.
‘What?' Lizzy asked curious to know.
Will shook his head slightly and then turned to face her.
‘I just...I can't believe all that has happened these past couple of months. So far this year in fact. It's all been...so...amazing for me.'
Lizzy blushed and turned away to hide it from his gaze.
‘No really Lizzy it's been just...amazing. First I'm with Caroline and thinking that I have everything I want with her and then I meet you through friends we have all had for so long but never met together, then I find myself breaking off my engagement and hoping to see you and talk to you every time Charles talks about Jane and seeing her. I really like you Lizzy, apparently you know that.'
Lizzy nodded with confidence and looked at him. She felt herself swell up inside and saw his eyes grow deeper with sparks and passion.
‘Lizzy...I'm finding myself...' Will took a breath and slowly took her hand.
‘I'm finding myself...fall-‘
A sharp rap on his window cut him off before he could say his next words. Lizzy's eyes closed and she let out a breath as she heard Will turn and roll down the window.
‘Will! Fancy you here. I'm just heading off. Have a good time at the movie?' Charles was standing outside the car door smiling at his friends and waiting for a response.
Lizzy's head was cocked to her right side as she regarded him and faintly smiled. Will started slowly talking to Charles and soon gained in a conversation with him.
‘What was he going to say...he's falling? Falling from what? Is he...does he...love...me?' Lizzy thought as she swayed her mind away from the movie comments and the evening Charles had with Jane.
‘Lizzy? Lizzy are you there?' Will asked.
Lizzy looked up from her staring at the glove box and smiled when she saw Charles grinning and Will looking confused at her.
‘I'm sorry. What was that?'
‘Oh I was just wondering if you liked the movie you and Will saw?' Charles said as Will turned the engine off and began to take his seat belt off.
Lizzy's bright smile made Will smile before she replied.
‘Oh yes! It was a wonderful movie...I had an amazing time.'
‘Good...good!' Charles replied as he stepped back for Will to get out. Lizzy unbuckled and let herself out of the car when Will opened the door for her.
‘Say Will...what are you doing tomorrow morning? Jane and I were thinking about going out to lunch. Would you like to join us?'
‘Uh...not tomorrow Charles, Lizzy and I are having brunch. But we might be able to join up later depending on how things go and all.'
‘Sounds fine. Well! I'm off. Have a good night you two.' And with that, Charles was in his car and drove off. Will and Lizzy waved goodbye and then started towards the front door.
Will followed Lizzy to her door of the apartment and once she was safely inside he declined her invitation to come in.
‘It's time I left anyways. I wanted to see you safely to your door.'
Lizzy tried to hide her disappointment but was unable to.
Will saw her face and brushed it with his tender touch of his hand all while standing in the doorway.
‘Lizzy...about what I was saying in the car...before Charles interrupted us...well...it can wait until another time. I just hope you understand that I'm happy with the way things are going with us.'
Lizzy looked up from looking at his chest and smiled softly.
‘I am happy when I'm with you Will. Our conversations are meaningful, fun, and interesting. The more I learn about you...the more I am impressed and happy to be able to understand you more.'
Nothing needed to be said. Only Will's lips soon pressing against her own were all that was needed. The passionate embrace was held for a few moments until the urgency of air was required. Will, with his head bowed down to look into her eyes, grinned and kissed her forehead before standing up straight to reveal his peak height that was so much above her own.
‘I'll pick you up around 10.45 tomorrow for brunch. You don't need to be fancy with dressing. The place we're going to is casual. ‘
Lizzy only nodded keeping her eyes cast down towards his knees.
‘Have a good night's sleep.'
Here Lizzy looked up and smiled brightly at him.
‘I can't wait for tomorrow. Just drive safely tonight and call---‘ Lizzy was interrupted herself by Jack who was at her leg trying to get her attention.
‘Oh hi Jack...how are you sweetie...'Lizzy cooed as she bent down to pet him. Will smiled and patted his head as Jack wagged his tail on his way to him to get his attention too.
‘Okay...I should go.' Will said as he rose from the floor and started towards the hallway.
‘Call me when you get home...so I know you're okay.' Lizzy asked and Will nodded with a smile.
About twenty minutes later, Lizzy received a text message from Will saying he was home safe and would have pleasant dreams of her. Needless to say, both of them were fast asleep and dreaming of good things to come.
Before Lizzy could sleep through a wonderful dream she was having about her and Will, Jane burst into her room with a panic expression on her face.
‘Lizzy? Lizzy wake up...I have to tell you something.'
Without an answer, Jane shook her almost violently to wake her.
‘Lizzy! Wake up!'
Groans came from Lizzy and before Jane could shake her again Lizzy's eyes opened and she acknowledged Jane.
Once she saw her face, she was curious.
‘What's wrong?'
‘Oh Lizzy!' Jane began and looked to almost cry.
‘Oh Lizzy I just got off the phone with Charles.'
She couldn't continue since her voice cracked. She only shook her head.
‘I really don't want to alarm you but what a mess I am. It seems that Charles was in a car accident.'
Lizzy quickly sat up and realized it was a good sign that he was talking to Jane but there seemed to be more.
‘What else Jane...tell me.'
It took a moment before Jane could respond.
‘Lizzy...Will and Charles. Will was in the front seat while Charles was driving. They were hit from side...(Jane's voice faltered) Charles said...he said...'
Lizzy felt a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach. She didn't want to think the worst. She didn't want to believe the worst.
‘Will isn't...dead. Is he?'
Jane started to cry and shake her head.
‘No Lizzy...no one is dead but Will is in critical condition and Charles...oh Lizzy Charles isn't hurt but he feels horrible. He wasn't himself when I talked to him. ‘
Lizzy stared at the floor. Her eyes were piercing with tears and they soon flowed down her cheeks. She didn't hear anything after ‘critical condition.' She glanced at the clock and saw it was 9.45 and jumped up to her closet.
‘Jane we have to go to the hospital. I have to see Will!' and then she muttered to herself how this couldn't be happening.
Jane and Lizzy readied themselves in record time of 20 minutes and flew out the door leaving a puzzled Jack behind with food and water. Jane was a mess but stable enough. Lizzy, however, was in a daze. She didn't know what to think. She was too worried about Will.
As Jane drove to the hospital, the two sisters contemplated on what happened since Charles hadn't told Jane what had happened.
When they arrived and parked, Lizzy flew out of the car and ran to the entrance of the emergency room with Jane in a steady tow behind her.
Lizzy didn't see anyone she knew in the waiting room and went directly to the front desk.
‘May I help you?' An older nurse hastened.
‘Yes I'm here to inquire on William Darcy and Charles Bingley please.'
‘Are you relatives?'
Lizzy paused but a moment until Jane came from behind and answered,
‘We are their fiancés.‘
Lizzy shook her head and blinked. That would have to do should we want to see them, she thought and looked worryingly at the nurse.
As she pulled up the chart to see if the two men where there, Lizzy felt Jane's hand rub against her arm.
‘Okay I have a Charles Bingley upstairs getting x-rays done and William Darcy...he's in the ICU being prepped for surgery.'
Lizzy's face went white and Jane asked the nurse if they could be seen.
‘You can wait here and when Mr. Bingley is done you can see him. Mr. Darcy is not responding right now so you will have to wait until after surgery.‘
‘Thank you.' Jane replied and moved with Lizzy to the other side of the crowded waiting room.
They didn't speak for many moments. Jane was feeling better about Charles thinking that he might not have any horrible injury, but was more worried for Lizzy and Will. She didn't receive much information from Charles, only knowing that the two men were planning on playing basketball this morning and then she and Charles were seeing each other for lunch. She looked at Lizzy finding her staring at the floor looking pale and her eyes brimming with tears. Placing an affectionate hand on her sister's back, she started to rub and tried to find the right words.
‘I'm sure he'll make it Lizzy. He's a strong man. He'll make it through.'
Absentmindedly, Lizzy whispered, ‘Yes.'
After waiting for nearly 45 minutes, Jane questioned the status of the men and was granted access to see Charles. Lizzy stayed in the waiting room and found an empty chair to sit in. It was located by the window looking out over the parking lot. The morning was bright and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky and Lizzy was melancholy and heartbroken, fearing for Will's life and hoping and praying for a safe and speedy recovery. She had no idea what type of critical condition he was in and she feared for the worst but prayed for the better.
‘Will...' she whispered to the glass while looking up in the sky,' Please...don't leave me...don't leave...'
It was nearly 35 minutes that Jane was gone and when she returned she seemed to gain color to her face. She found Lizzy and sat down beside her.
‘I talked to Charles.'
‘Is he okay Jane?'
Jane nodded.
‘He only has a broken couple of ribs that should heal soon.‘
‘Hmm...what happened?' Lizzy asked and then looked back out the window.
‘Charles and Will were on their way back from playing basketball at their gym when they were about a block from Will's house to drop him off. Charles said that he was stopped at a red light waiting to go straight and when the light changed, he started to go through. When he was about halfway through another car from the opposite side hit on the passenger's side...where Will was sitting. The driver of the other car is...dead. It's amazing Charles and Will made it...I guess the car's impact was more towards the back than the front. It wasn't a very hard hit, but it was an impact. He was only going about 45 through the light and Charles said he was gaining speed to go through the light and didn't see him. Oh Lizzy...I'm so sorry!' Jane said as her arms fled around her sister who was trying so hard to hold back the tears.
‘Jane! Did Charles say anything else?' Lizzy asked trying to shake herself out of her daze.
‘Only that when he looked up and tried to wake Will that he wasn't responding but he was breathing. He seemed to be groaning a bit but then he fell out of it. Charles called 911 right away. It was about two hours ago. Will is in surgery apparently. I don't know for how long.'
‘I can't believe this. I can't stand this!' Lizzy cried and wiped away the falling tears.
‘The nurse told me that you and I can see Charles in a bit. They are just putting him in a room for a time.'
‘Should I call Caroline?' Jane asked and Lizzy reluctantly nodded.
‘Yes...she should know. ‘
Jane called Caroline and dreaded hearing her gone on about her brother and then upon hearing Will's condition she responded that she would be there as soon as possible.
Jane and Lizzy were granted access to seeing Charles about twenty minutes later. When Lizzy saw Charles she immediately smiled weakly and tried to give him a hug.
She was terrified of hurting him, but felt relief in seeing a happy face as his when he saw Jane and Lizzy enter his room.
‘Thank you two for coming down here. I really appreciate it.' Charles began but his smile soon faded when he saw that Lizzy wasn't smiling anymore.
‘I'm so sorry Lizzy. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. It's all my fault.' Charles started but was soon stopped by Lizzy.
‘Charles...stop. You didn't do anything wrong. I just hope he makes it. I'm so worried-‘ her voice cut out on her as the tears choked her up and her head fell to her chest.
Jane went to her side to hug her and Charles gave a sad look to Jane in sympathy.
‘He will make it Lizzy. Will is very strong. He would not leave any of us. He loves us.' Charles said.
Lizzy looked up at him and half smiled. She took in his appearance. He had no shirt on, only white bandages wrapped around his lightly tanned torso. He was sitting up in the bed and looked stiff and slightly in pain. Jane sat next to him as Lizzy stood by the window.
The door opened a bit later and a nurse entered with Caroline in tow.
‘Charles! What happened? Where's William?' Caroline's face betrayed her worry but it was slightly dramatic.
Charles tried to explain the situation, but Caroline seemed to think it was Charles that was to blame. Charles, being patient, let his sister go on and stopped trying to convince her of the facts.
Jane silently thought Caroline dramatic and only interested in Will a bit too much while Lizzy was fuming with anger at the lack of compassion and sympathy for her brother and more so for Will's condition where Caroline's interest seemed to lie more. True they were together and knew each other for much longer a time, but to Lizzy, Caroline was more in tune with her own self, than anyone else, excepting Will who she knew afforded her lifestyle for so long.
After about two more hours of waiting, Lizzy was getting fed up. She couldn't stand being in close proximity with Caroline and was more fearing of Will's state being that the painful hours were passing with little word than just ‘He's in surgery' and ‘We will let you know as soon as we have news.'
Lizzy was about to make a mad dash for the door to find a doctor instead of a nurse and ask for some sort of status, when a nurse entered the room.
‘Miss? Are you Mr. Darcy's fiancé?' The nurse was looking at Lizzy, but Caroline stood up and answered her. Lizzy forgot about her excuse in order to see Will and almost went white in fear of Caroline knowing, but was more livid and paniced about Caroline standing up to say she was his fiancé.
The nurse looked at Caroline in confusion and then back at Lizzy.
‘Uh...no I am. Excuse me Caroline.' Lizzy said as she walked towards the nurse.
Jane looked at Charles, who she had immediately informed him when she first saw him of how they were allowed in, and Charles spoke up.
‘Nurse, that woman there is Will's finance. Please excuse my sister.' He emphasized and Caroline stood with her mouth agape at Lizzy's retreating figure.
‘WHAT?!'
‘Caroline...don't start.'
Lizzy was on the heels of the nurse with her heart pounding and her blood rushing through her veins at hearing something more than the word surgery.
The nurse didn't say anything to Lizzy until they reached the elevator.
‘Ma'am, Dr. Merth will be able to tell you the condition of Mr. Darcy. I'm just going to take you to the ICU, okay?' she said as she pressed the elevator button for the floor they needed. Lizzy merely nodded.
When they reached the floor, it was eerily quiet that and Lizzy felt cold and distant. She heard faint coughing and some footsteps through the corridor. They reached the ICU desk and the nurse put down the chart she was carrying and then went behind the desk to ask another nurse where Dr. Merth was.
While she was going to get him, Lizzy stayed put trying to strain to hear what the nurses were saying. Her ears perked when she thought she heard status on a patient.
‘Mary...patient in 103 passed just fifteen minutes ago. Seemed he was in a wreck and didn't make it through surgery.'
‘Damn...well let's get it checked and I'll call the family to have the doctor talk to them.'
Lizzy went pale again and felt sick. Her eyes were moist with tears as she heard the nurses speak. They didn't see Lizzy and they were just within earshot of Lizzy so they didn't think anyone could truly hear.
Before Lizzy could think of anything else, the nurse who fetched her from upstairs returned with an older man who had salt and pepper hair and glasses. He was taller than Lizzy but shorter than Will was. He seemed kind and when he saw Lizzy a faint smile appeared on his face.
‘Miss? Are you William Darcy's fiancé?'
Lizzy only nodded and then cleared her throat quietly.
‘I'm Dr. Phillip Merth, head surgeon here at Meryton Community Hospital.'
‘What news...what news do you have for me?' She spoke faintly.
‘Well...Mr. Darcy was admitted here with internal bleeding and a sharp blow to the head, however, after some surgery to help stop the bleeding, he's doing fine in a sense. Right now I have him conscious and he has requested to see you. I need to warn you though, he is slightly out of it with the medication I have him on right now. He's been out of surgery for about an hour and needs to stay here for a few nights for observation.'
Lizzy could not express in words the relief that washed over her but her eyes conveyed it along with her smile. The doctor smiled and nodded his head.
‘Yes...he made it just fine. He did wonderful in surgery and he should make a good recovery.'
‘Oh thank you! Thank you! May I see him? Please?' Lizzy asked with her hands clasped together and in front of her neck. Dr. Merth nodded and extended his arm for her to follow him.
When the reached the room of Will, number 111, Lizzy was escorted in and saw Will laying in bed that was propped up a bit for him to be comfortable. Ivs and monitors were hooked up to him and at the sight, Lizzy was in tears but slightly smiled.
‘I'll let you be. Take your time.'
Lizzy thanked him and waited for him to leave before approaching Will. Will's eyes were closed but a half smile lighted up on his face and his eyes opened when he felt Lizzy's hand on his.
‘Oh Will...'
‘Shh...I'm okay.' He said with a strained voice from hardly speaking.
‘You...you...'
He slowly put his hand on hers and looked into her eyes.
‘Sit with me.' He whispered.
Lizzy sat in a nearby chair that was close to his bed. They didn't speak for several moments. Will was fading in and out from sleep and Lizzy tried to keep him awake by drawing circles on his hand and arm. Will smiled and then attempted to speak.
‘I'm glad you came. Did Charles call you?'
‘Yes...he called Jane. She's with him now.'
‘He okay?'
Lizzy nodded, ‘ Yes only a few broken ribs. He should be out today or tomorrow.'
Will nodded slightly then tried to turn his head to face her.
‘Lizzy...I'm sorry about not having brunch with you. We were on our way to get ready...so I could see you...I'm sorry.'
‘Shh..shh...you have nothing to be sorry for. You didn't do anything. I'm just so thankful that you are alive and able to recover.'
‘I guess I'll have to be here for a while huh?'
‘Yes,' Lizzy smiled, ‘ For a few days. Just to make sure you're okay. But I will visit you everyday. I promise.'
‘Good.' He paused and then looked into her eyes.
‘Lizzy...I want to tell you...' Will swallowed and almost looked in pain while his eyes were closing,' I need to tell you...that...'
The monitor started to beep slowly and Lizzy looked worried.
‘Will? Will!'
Will's eyes fluttered open and focused on her face.
‘Sorry...Lizzy...I love you.'
Lizzy smiled and squeezed his hand. Before she could respond though, the monitor started to flatline.
Lizzy pressed the call button a few times and started to shout out for Dr. Merth.
‘Will! Will! Please wake up!' She pleaded with more fresh tears streaming down her tired face.
‘You have to wake up Will please!!'
Dr. Merth and two nurses fled into the room and immediately assisted the patient. Will wasn't responding and Dr. Merth was rapping out orders and directions to the two assisting nurses. Lizzy stood back enough to allow them room to work and watched with fearful eyes. Her hand clapped over her mouth and the tears soon stopped as she intently watched the staff working on Will.
‘He's in shock and he may be bleeding again internally. Get Dr. Verga in surgery now and call down for anesthesia.' Dr. Merth hurriedly checked the monitors and tried CPR but nothing was working.
As if on cue, Jane came into the room and found Lizzy in a corner watching the commotion. Immediately, Jane went to her sister's side.
‘Lizzy...'
Lizzy turned around and Jane saw the tears stained on her cheeks and new ones forming in her eyes. Her arms encircled Lizzy and then she could feel the silent sobs coming from her.
‘Oh Jane! He's not responding! He...he...he has to make it...I have to...Oh Jane!'
Jane held her close as she tried to watch Dr. Merth in action.
‘Doctor, we have everyone on standby in surgery.'
But Dr. Merth wasn't listening. Instead he was on his last pump of Will's chest and listening to his lungs. A small grin formed on his face and then he nodded at his attending nurse.
Lizzy's ears perked at a sound and turned to see the monitor register a heartbeat. Jane softly let go and Lizzy turned in her arms to see that Will was in fact slightly breathing.
‘Let's hold off on that for a moment...Miss...may I please?'
Lizzy nodded and Jane led her from the room and to a nearby seat in the corridor.
‘Lizzy...I came down here to see how he was doing and to let Charles know. I'm glad I came when I did. Are you okay?'
Lizzy's eyes were red and swollen, but her lips formed a small smile. Nodding, she let out a breath.
‘I will be. Oh Jane...I can't bear to see him this way. He just came back and now he's in the hospital? I've known him for such a short time yet it has been long enough for him to-‘ Lizzy cut herself off afraid of admitting what she had heard for fear of it being too good to be true so sudden.
‘For him to what Lizzy?'
Lizzy searched her sister's eyes and shook her head.
‘For him to become such an important person in my life...so soon.'
Jane smiled and put her arm around Lizzy's shoulders.
‘I know what you mean. Charles has become that for me too. Albeit, he and I have seen each other more than you and Will, he still means very much to me.'
The two of them forced a grin and then Lizzy wiped her tears with her hand.
‘How is Charles?' She asked trying to settle herself.
‘He's napping right now. He sent Caroline home to rest and when we hear anything we need to let her know. But somehow I think she can wait a while. I don't think she needs to know every particular about Will and his present state.'
‘Did she say she wanted to?'
Jane bit her lip with a grin.
‘Well after you left, she started to spout about the comment of fiancé being attached to your name. I tried to explain to her that it was the only way to see him and make sure he was all right but she didn't listen I don't think. Charles pretty much told her to stop and rethink the situation, being that they are no longer a couple. I think Caroline still feels something for him. She kept talking about him and how she wanted to take care of him once he was released.'
Lizzy merely rolled her eyes and started to shuffle her feet.
‘But,' Jane continued,‘Charles said it wasn't her place. Then he asked her to go so he could rest.'
Lizzy only nodded. They sat in silence for a few moments until Dr. Merth approached them.
‘Miss...?'
‘I'm sorry doctor. My name is Elizabeth Bennet. This is my sister Jane.'
Dr. Merth smiled and politely acknowledged Jane before turning to Lizzy.
‘Miss Bennet, it seems that Will went into shock. As you know I was able to revive him. He should be fine now...I sincerely promise you I will personally take care of him until he is fully recovered...even beyond the hospital doors.' He said and smiled to lighten the mood.
Lizzy let out a breath and smiled in return.
‘Thank you so much Dr. Merth. I didn't think you to be an unfit doctor in any means, I'm only thankful that you were able to save him.'
‘Yes...well, he's sleeping right now, so I think it best for you to return later this evening or tomorrow morning. I personally will check on him and have my nurses call you should anything take a turn for the worse.'
Lizzy nodded.
‘Just give Miranda over there your number.' He said and started to walk away.
‘Oh! Dr. Merth?'
Dr. Merth turned around and looked at Lizzy.
‘You know Miss Bennet...he is very lucky to have so much faith and love in you.'
Lizzy smiled.
‘Might I be able to just see him once before I leave this afternoon?'
The doctor almost frowned but then nodded.
Lizzy and Jane made their way to the nurse's station and found Miranda. After giving her Lizzy's number, the two girls walked in the direction of Will's room.
‘I'll only be a moment Jane.'
Jane nodded and refrained from entering while Lizzy slowly opened the heavy door.
The room was still and all that could be heard were the monitors. Lizzy felt a calm wash over her and she made her way to his side.
He looked so peaceful despite the tubes and everything surrounding him. Lizzy never took a good look before and now noticed a bandage on his left side of his head near his temple. She also took note of a bruised lip the shade of vivid purple and cheek that was turning bright blue and black. His left hand was bandaged up and there was a scratch on the right side of his face near his eye.
Lizzy gently played with some errant curls that were overlapping the bandage and then stroked his cheek. A soft tear fell from her eye and onto his head. Lizzy wiped another threatening one away and smiled down on him.
‘Will...please be all right.' She said and then reached for his hand to hold.
After looking at him intently for a few minutes, she gently kissed his lips.
Before she moved her face towards his right ear.
‘I love you Will.' She breathed and then squeezed his hand.
Jane and Lizzy decided that once they reached their car, they would get a bite to eat and return later in the evening. Charles was to call Jane when he woke up and was feeling better.
The two girls felt better about the situation and knowing that the guys were in good hands.
‘I wonder who hit them?' Lizzy questioned as she bit into her bread.
Jane looked up and slowly shook her head.
‘Whoever it was...it's still sad to know that they died. But what were they thinking? I don't think anyone else was in the car.' Jane replied as she put her spoon into her soup.
The girls decided on something warm and comforting, so Jane took them to Panera Bread for some soup and sandwiches.
‘I don't know. How would you find out something like that?' Lizzy asked.
‘Maybe Charles can find out once he is ready to be discharged. I'm sure he has a right to know.'
Suddenly a sick feeling came over Lizzy and she slowly took in Jane's eyes.
‘What if the press finds out about this? I mean...Charles and Will are known in the business world of things.'
Jane looked worried and Lizzy's mind was going non-stop thinking about it.
‘Look,' Jane said after a moment,‘ whatever happens will happen, but we can be their for their support. We can help them through this.'
Lizzy nodded and paid attention to her lunch.
After lunch, the two went home and took a nap. Later in the day, Jane went to see Caroline to make sure she was okay, while Lizzy decided to call Georgie and let her know about the accident.
After she relayed the details that she had so far, Georgie was quite upset.
‘Oh Lizzy! Please take care of him. I wish I could see him. Maybe I should travel over?'
‘Georgie you need to do what you think. I'm here for him and they say he's getting better. I called them before I called you and they say he's sleeping right now. I'm planning on visiting him tomorrow.'
‘I can't leave Lizzy. But I want to. Will you keep me posted? And when he can, have him call me?'
‘Of course I can and I will. I'm sorry this has happened.'
‘It's no one's fault except the man who was driving the other car. Why didn't he see the red light?'
‘Well it was a really sunny day out and the intersection that the accident happened at tends to be hard to see when your in coming from the side the sun is shining in on. I think that's what happened. That's my guess anyway.'
‘What happened to the driver?'
‘Apparently, he died.'
‘On site?'
‘No...Jane found out from Charles, that he died on the way to the hospital. Charles found out more information. He's trying to find out the name of the driver...to send his condolences to.'
‘Oh man...Lizzy...' Georgie started to cry. She didn't like hearing about death and especially hearing a close call on her brother.
‘Georgie I will let you know anything I know. I promise.'
Lizzy hung up with confidence that Will would be all right and giving that to Georgie to hold on to as well.
The next day, Lizzy decided to come home early and Jane walked through the door finding her asleep on the couch.
As soon as she went to her room to change, Jane got a call from Charles. She hadn't been by to see him that day since she was in class, but was planning on seeing him that night.
‘Hello?' She answered while trying to change her pants.
‘Hi sweetheart.'
‘Charles! Are you feeling any better?'
‘The painkillers are wonderful Jane. I am feeling rested after my nap and a snack. I'm able to leave tonight. Was wondering if you would like to escort me home?'
‘Of course Charles. I'm just changing now and I'll be on my way.'
‘Thanks Jane. How was Will?'
Jane bit her lip but smiled with being able to tell Charles that his best friend was doing better.
‘Surgery went well. He was given medication that he had a bad reaction to, but he is on the mend. Lizzy was terribly upset. When I went to visit her and Will, he wasn't responding, but the doctor was able to revive him and help him.'
Before Jane knew it she thought she said too much as Charles was silent.
‘Charles?'
‘Oh...Jane...wow...I feel terrible. I didn't---do you suppose that---‘
‘What Charles? Tell me.' Jane encouraged softly.
‘I just feel awful for this whole mess. I didn't mean for this to happen. It just makes me think...about everything.'
‘Oh darling...it's not your fault. You didn't know that the other driver was coming until he hit you. You can't blame yourself. I'm sure Will wouldn't want you too. He understands.'
‘Does he Jane? He's like a brother to me. An older brother and I don't know what I would do without him. His opinion means so much to mean and his friendship is...everything to me in regards to him and me.'
Jane rubbed her eyes and smiled.
‘He knows.'
Silence filled the line until Charles spoke quickly.
‘I want to see you Jane. I need you.'
‘Okay...let me get ready and I'll be there in half an hour okay?'
‘Please hurry.'
‘I will.'
After saying goodbye, Jane finished her change then went to wake up Lizzy. However, Jane found Jack licking her face and Lizzy trying to push him away.
‘Good job Jack...she needs to get up.' Jane said to Jack and then gently shook Lizzy.
‘Lizzy...we need to go to the hospital now. It's time to get up.'
Slowly Lizzy woke up and got ready. Within 20 minutes the girls were walking towards the main entrance of the hospital.
‘Did you want to see Charles with me or just go straight to Will?'
‘I'd like to say hi to Charles but I won't stay long. I'm hoping Will is up.'
The girls were they escorted to Charles's floor and upon entering they were greeted with a smile.
‘Thanks for coming. Lizzy, I heard from Jane what happened. Please let him know that I'll be by tomorrow.‘
‘Sure Charles. I uh...I want you to know that you're not to blame for this. But I thank you for all you did to save his life.'
Charles blushed and smiled. He then turned to Jane and reached for her hand.
‘I think I'll go check on Will now. I'll come by later?'
Jane nodded and as Lizzy left, she heard Charles say how much he missed Jane.
Lizzy went to the elevator and when the doors opened she let herself in.
The nurses at the desk of the ICU smiled when they heard whom Lizzy was seeing.
‘Quite a cutie Miss.' one of the nurses stated as she had Lizzy sign in.
Lizzy blushed and turned towards the room. Before she left however, she asked his condition.
‘I just checked on him a couple minutes ago and his vitals are good. He's sleeping right now, but I'm sure he'll be up in a bit.'
‘Thank you.' Lizzy smiled and went on her way.
Softly she knocked on the door and then entered after a moment.
Her breath caught sight of Will asleep and looking very peaceful. She sat herself down in the chair she had occupied so many times before yesterday and this morning.
Will hadn't been able to talk to her being that his condition was weak but getting better. She was able to openly stare at him for a good ten minutes before he started to wake up.
‘Will...'
Will's eyes were smiling yet they were forming tears. Lizzy had almost thought she was out of tears but was able to keep them at bay this time when seeing that Will was more to his normal self.
‘Lizzy...I...I don't know exactly what happened...but I'm terribly happy to see you.' Will said as his English accent slowly drawled.
‘Oh Will...Jane got a call from Charles this morning and we hurried right over. I never...do you remember me here earlier?'
Will slowly nodded.
‘I do remember but I wasn't feeling very well and some things I don't remember.'
‘Will...you basically died for a few minutes.'
‘I know...Dr. Merth told me. But I'm mending better now. Dr. Merth believes I should be out by Wednesday. You will visit me won't you?'
‘Of course! I would stay here with you if I could.'
‘Thank you. Now...I have to apologize for not being able to have brunch with you yesterday. I promise to make it up to you.'
‘No you don't have to. Will...are you able to find out who did this to you?'
Will paused and then grinned at Lizzy and took her hand.
‘I can certainly try,' he then raked his hand through his curls, 'I must look a mess.'
Lizzy smiled.
‘No you still are handsome as ever. My heart still skips beats.'
‘Well good thing you're in a hospital. Me as well since I know mine skips three times that much when I see you.' He looked ardently into her eyes making Lizzy blush and turn away.
‘Have you eaten?' He asked noticing his affect on her.
She shook her head.
‘Well maybe you could get us something. I'm sure I can have something to eat since I haven't eaten either. Care to join me for some hospital food? I can't promise it will be any good, but I can sure join you.'
‘I'd like that.'
After the nurse agreed to get some food for Will and Lizzy was allowed to bring some up from the cafeteria, they ate the drab food and started to laugh at the day's events.
‘This is utterly ridiculous. I can't believe this has happened.' Will said after laughing at the food he just ate.
‘I'm just happy to see you safe and well. I was very worried about you.'
Will took Lizzy's hand and pulled for her to come closer.
‘Lizzy...thank you for being here with me. I appreciate everything you do for me so much and I guess...this is the time to tell you---‘
The room phone started to ring and reluctantly with a bit of exasperation, Will answered.
‘Hello?'
‘Will! I'm glad to hear you're voice. Are you feeling...well...okay?'
‘Hi Charles, yes...I'm feeling much better. I think the painkillers are helping out tremendously. How are you?'
‘Just a couple broken ribs...nothing as serious as you have been through. I'm getting out tonight. Listen...I'm sorry about this. I didn't mean for any of this to happ---‘
‘Charles please...it wasn't your fault and I could hardly blame you. I just hope the other driver was okay.'
‘Actually...he didn't make it. Oh Jane I forgot to tell you...I found out who it was...Will since I have you on the line...I found out who the other driver was.'
‘Really?' Will asked and heard Jane's voice in the background.
‘I'll be right back.' Lizzy whispered and exited the room to use the restroom.
‘Okay Charles who was it?'
‘Elliot Clay.'
Will frowned at the name...somehow it seemed familiar.
In Charles's room, Jane went completely pale. Elliot Clay. Charles noticed her complexion and reached out to her.
‘Jane...Jane are you okay?'
‘What's wrong with Jane Charles?' Will asked.
‘Hold on...' Charles then turned to Jane,' Jane...honey...what's the matter?'
‘Elliot Clay? Charles...that's...Elliot is Lizzy's ex.'
Since Charles didn't cover up his end of the line, Will picked up on her words and the sudden realization hit him.
‘What was he doing here?' Jane asked to Charles and Charles sat in shock before hearing Will say he had to go.
‘Lizzy's ex?' Will muttered to himself. Now he felt horrible.
Even though he had heard about Elliot and how the relationship was for Lizzy, he would never of wanted this fatal end for him.
Will sat up a bit more and stared down at his hands and didn't look up when she returned.
Charles hung up the phone and took Jane's hands away from her mouth and into his own hands. He didn't speak for a few moments as Jane was in a state of complete shock.
Jane soon shook her head and motioned to sit down.
‘Jane...honey...'
She shook her head again and then slightly grinned.
‘You know...I used to really like him. He was such a great guy in the beginning. Lizzy was so happy with him. But it didn't last.' She let out a breath and then continued.
‘Charles...Lizzy is going to be...upset...when she hears this. If in fact this is the man that I know. I can't believe it though. I thought he...'
‘You thought what Jane?' Charles asked kindly, while rubbing his thumb softly against her knuckles.
‘I thought...that he was in Alabama. We never heard from him much. Not unless he needed to let Lizzy know he couldn't...she's going to be so upset.'
‘I'm sorry Jane...I didn't mean for any of this to happen.'
Jane looked up at Charles and smiled when she met his eyes. Those deep blue eyes were pleading apologies to her, but her smile softened them into love. Charles was then hit with it as if it was clear like the blue sky this morning.
‘Jane...I love you.'
Beaming, he continued,
‘This...today...has made me realize how much I love you...despite the events; I don't think I could ever let you go. In fact I never want that to happen.'
Jane blushed furiously and cast her eyes to their entwined hands.
‘Oh Charles...I'm...' Her back started to heave and Charles was worried she was crying.
‘Jane?' He asked worried and soon broke into a smile when Jane's face slowly turned up with a great big smile and she had a couple of tears trickling down.
‘I love you so much Charles. I think I loved you from the moment we met.'
‘I know I did...I do love you Jane.'
Lizzy's brow furrowed when she saw that Will wasn't speaking. She had returned to the room and sat down in the chair beside his bed for a near two minutes, which felt like eternity.
‘Will...is something wrong?' Lizzy ventured trying to get a good look at his face, which did not move from when she entered. He was entranced with his hands it seemed. He played with a bit of bandage that stuck out of the side and didn't seem to hear her so she repeated herself.
‘Elizabeth...'
Her breath was cut short be the use of her full name being heard for the first time by Will. She looked at him feeling her stomach do somersaults and flips. Waiting almost impatiently she nodded her head.
‘I need to tell you something that I really don't ...I'm not sure how you'll respond to this...but please know that I am here for you. That I ...I care so much for you.'
She swallowed hard and then tried to speak.
‘Wh..what...uh...what is it?'
‘Elizabeth...the man who drove the car...that hit us...Charles told me his name.'
Fearful dread hit Lizzy's mind as names of people she knew reeled fast through her head. Her mind couldn't choose any that she would think of. Will reached out for Lizzy's hand and tilted her chin up to look into his eyes. She nodded when she caught his stare and let a tear slowly stream down her face.
‘Who is it Will?' she asked almost as if she was preparing herself for the worst.
Deeply he focused on her eyes and narrowed his sight to make sure he was able to say his name. His thumb instantly stopped her tear and he leaned in to kiss where he wiped away the moisture. He squeezed her hand and then let out a whisper of a breath before saying,
‘Elliot Clay.'
