Chapter 17
Will didn't have to wait to see Lizzy. Instead she had come over to Charles' place the next morning to talk to him. She called ahead first, speaking with Charles' and making sure that Caroline wouldn't disturb them. Throughout the night she was thinking about the whole day and about how humiliated she was in front of her friends and in front of Will. She talked with Jane that morning and only received the utmost support and understanding from her, like she knew she would. Jane relayed that Will was concerned the whole time about her and watched her incessantly throughout the day and evening. Lizzy, feeling even worse when she heard that, hugged her sister and told her she needed to talk to Will. She needed time for herself and with everything happening she didn't think a relationship would work. Jane stated she would support her, but also advised that Will wasn't Eliot and wouldn't hurt her the way she was hurt before. That Will was actually a good thing for her and to be with him. Lizzy however, was strong headed to disregard her sister's opinion no matter how much she wanted Jane to be right.
She was on her way over reciting what she would say through her head and once she drove up to 469 Bridge Wood Street, she felt better. Charles let her in telling her that Will was in his study waiting for her. As she entered the room, she saw Will dressed in a dark gray crewneck sweater and khaki pants with freshly washed curls dampening on top his head. His strong clean and manly cologne emanated her nostrils as she was taken up into this arms when he saw her enter the study.
‘Will...I have to talk to you.' She said.
Here he stepped back and took in her appearance. She was dressed simply in gray sweatpants, and a navy blue sweatshirt with red lettering on it. Her short hair pulled back into a clip again with little strands falling out. Her hair smelled so clean and fresh when he held her that is was hard to let go. Her dark eyes weren't as tired and distant as yesterday. She seemed more relaxed and yet stiff with how she was starting again.
‘I want to apologize for yesterday. I didn't...I didn't think Mary would actually be here. In fact, she surprised me with bringing her son and herself to the funeral. I just...the things said yesterday were things that are partly true and partly false. I wanted you to know...'
Will sat down on the sofa while leading her to sit with him. She did and smiled at him.
Lizzy then stood up.
‘I came here because...I need your help.'
‘In what way?' He asked easily.
‘I need you to give me time. I can't be with you until I figure everything out. No matter...no matter how much I love you.'
A sudden hush filled the air between them and then Will stood up and stepped closer to her.
‘Lizzy...you are so beautiful and I don't ever want to hurt you. I never want to see you sad or upset or bothered. Tell me what's wrong please?'
‘Nothing's wrong Will. I'm fine.' She said in a cool manner.
His finger slipped under her chin and lifted her up to meet his eyes.
‘Lizzy...' he said almost stern.
‘Will really...nothing is wrong. I just am preoccupied with other things right now.'
Will took a step back and looked at her.
‘Like what?'
‘Just...things. Things I can't explain very well and I don't want to talk about.' She sniffed and let tears be wiped away by Will's hand. His disappointment was never shown on his face, but livid in his heart.
Was it too soon to tell her?? Was he wrong?
‘I'm here for you Lizzy. I can help you. If you need money or if you need to talk.'
‘Money? I don't need money Will...I don't want your money! I'm not here because of money.' She snapped.
Will took a step back and took a breath.
‘Will...I didn't cheat on Eliot. I never was with anyone but him. He in fact cheated on me with Mary and not just once...all the time. He couldn't choose and when I threatened to leave he would stay and not talk to her for a while. When I found out that she was pregnant, that's when I knew I needed to get out. But it took so long. Eventually I did it and went through a horrible time to get there. My speech yesterday was true if anyone really knew him. His family did but would never admit it. He would abuse me...not just physically but emotionally and mentally. I used to second guess myself and now...I don't. I used to think myself nothing at all worth anyone but now I don't. I've learned a lot from him. For so long he had me captive. I used to be apart of my family and friends life. My brother and I were actual close. Now I hardly speak to him let alone see him. My dad and I are closer now, but it didn't always used to be that way.' She sighed.
Will led her back to the sofa and softly asked her to tell him what she was holding onto for so long. She looked out the window and then at the fireplace. She knew she wanted to tell him. Everyone had their bit about the story, but she wanted to tell him from her own lips.
‘I met Elliot when I was in highschool. He's always been by me. I was completely taken with him when we first started. Things went well for the first nine months or so, then Mary entered. Elliot is a couple years older than me and Mary was his first for everything. But I didn't want to let him go so I tried so hard to fight for him. During all this, I was neglecting my family and friends. My dad and I started fighting all the time, I didn't want to go to college, I didn't care about my friends, even Marianne was pressed at me for not truly being there. Not with my heart, only my body. It got lonely, but he was there right by me. After graduation I moved out and lived with Elliot. But I was so isolated with him and his family that I hardly got to see mine. My friends are still there, you know, Marianne, Elinor, and so forth, but...as the years went by I felt that I was being torn away from people I found myself yearning for and caring for more than Elliot.' She sighed and then continued.
'He wouldn't let me stay at my parents house for more than 30 minutes. Yet he would always stay at his dad's house or visit his mom. I went with thinking this is how things were to happen. But I started to realize that it wasn't true. He started to call Mary and get together with her and try to make me prove my love for him. It got so bad that I left him for a week and then I couldn't handle it so I came back. For punishment he locked me in a closet with him inside the light off to help me understand that I shouldn't do that. I told him he deserved to be slapped for what he did and so I did it but he punched me right back. It was horrible living with him after that. I didn't want anything to do with him but that was three years ago...it took me two years to leave him. Over those years, I found my strength and I found my connections. My lifelines if you will. Jane was always there for me and she would always support me. She had her boyfriend at the time come over, help move my stuff with his friends, then truck it back to my parents place, which wasn't much, not even as much as we moved to Jane's place and then Jane helped me get out of my lease with my apartment manager. My dad put out a restraining order on him and...well ever since then I've been living my life. It was hard at first but, I've been doing so well the past year that I can't believe I've even been through all of that. I just...'
Lizzy burst into tears. She didn't know why but she just let it happen. Letting the tears fall and then looking at Will she didn't know what was happening.
Will held her close and let her cry for nearly twenty minutes where she began to calm down and wipe her eyes.
‘Let it out Lizzy...it's okay to cry for him.'
Lizzy shot her head up.
‘I wasn't crying over him,' she stated harshly,' I've cried my tears for him long ago. No I'm over him Will. I have been for a long time. My grief for him was well over before we were even over.'
‘Then why the tears my love?'
Lizzy chewed her lip.
‘Because---I' she look at him with a fixed confidence and then continued, ‘ I don't know what to do.'
Hers tears dry and her face etched with pain, Will kissed her cheeks and then smiled.
‘Let me help you Lizzy. Please?'
Lizzy shook her head.
‘I can't very well let you do that. What must you think of me?' She audibly whispered.
Will inched closer to her and looked down at her.
‘I think perfect in every particular.'
‘I'm no Mary Poppins Will.'
‘Ahh yes maybe not, but you are wonderful, bright, intelligent, strong, vivacious, and may I even say beautiful?' Will said in his clipped and refined accent.
Lizzy smiled and blushed.
‘Let me help you Lizzy. I have good lawyers, I have resources to help you. I'm a very resourceful man.'
Lizzy stared at his sweater and wanted to kick herself for letting him in. She felt horrible and didn't want him to help him this way.
‘Will...'
‘Allow me this Lizzy. It's the least I can do.'
‘But Will my dad and my uncle even my brother are lawyers. They can help me. They are already working on the case. I called my dad the other night to let him know what was going on. I thank you Will. Which reminds me, if you want, you can come with me to my dad's place to help me through this. I'd like your support.'
Will nodded and smiled. No matter what, he would always be there for her and he always wanted to support her in anyway he could.
‘Lizzy...after listening to you talk about your past, I want you to know that I don't think any less of you. In fact, I find you amazing. You have such strength, such passion and I can only say that I am proud with how you have handled it. I understand...in terms what you feel about going through that. I know that well let's just say that it hit home in a sense.' He looked deeply into her eyes and then peered closely at her while she looked down to find something on her hands to occupy her. Will knew the effect he had on her. But he knew the effect she had on him was equally matched. He wanted to be with her so badly and yet she had said before that she didn't think it right.
‘Lizzy...Elizabeth...' Here he caught her attention as her head lightly snapped up and her eyes immediately met Will's.
‘You don't need to be alone with this. You aren't alone. You have so many people who love you. Jane, Charles, Marianne, Charlotte, Robert, Elinor, Edward, uh...your family, your co-workers I'm sure adore you, and you have me. You have me Lizzy. I'm right here and I never want to leave your side. Please...cannot we make this work? I know that we can. I know that I love you full force full mach 300 for heaven's sake! (Lizzy lightly giggled through glistening eyes) I love you Elizabeth...so much...so dearly. Allow me to love you...allow me to treat you as you should be treated. Better than any woman has ever been. You deserve that my love...you deserve so much...and yet...with everything I could give you...you still deserve more.' By now Will's forehead was kissing Lizzy's and her eyes let the tears fall but not for fear of the unknown, but for the realization of knowing how much her heart was flooded and overflowing with love for this man in front of her.
Will looked down at her hands and took them in his.
‘Lizzy...will you...will you be with me?'
After a firm thinking, Lizzy consented and after a kiss to seal it, Will hugged her tightly. He then, to break up the tension he could feel and to keep himself in check, looked seriously into her eyes. The dark green had turned light against the sunshine that poured into the study. Golden specks sparkled as she looked into his own eyes steadily.
‘Elizabeth...I must ask you something...terribly important. Something I can't wait to ask you a minute longer.' He slid himself off the sofa and onto one knee facing her, eyes still focusing on hers.
Lizzy held her breath. No...it can't be...can it?
‘Elizabeth Bennet...will you...would it be terribly too much to ask if you...would you have breakfast with me?'
Lizzy's mouth opened slightly to hold a breath and then she started laughing hysterically and pushing Will in the arm. Both of them laughed for a while and before she could answer, the study door opened.
‘Would you two quiet down! Caroline is in the dining room and she thinks the TV's on again. Everything all right though?' Charles smiled as he saw Will's face buried into Lizzy's tummy and Lizzy playing with one of his curls as they quieted down their laughter.
‘Everything's fine Charles. Thank you so much for...well...everything. Will and I were just...contemplating breakfast is all.'
‘Yes...I'm terribly hungry and wanted to ask her properly for breakfast.'
Charles, not understanding a thing but smiling just the same as if he did, shook his head and helped Lizzy up as Will got himself up.
‘Would you be terribly upset if we went somewhere else? I don't want to face Caroline today? Only at work or absolutely necessary events do I ever want to face her.'
‘Good point. Let me get my keys and meds and we can be off.'
Charles stood there and then on impulse gave Lizzy a hug as he saw her facial expression start to fade from happiness to loneliness.
‘Oh Lizzy...we care for you so much. You are like a sister to me now you know. And you never know...maybe Jane would accept me? Then it could be final!'
Charles looked down at her and received a smile.
‘You make her very happy Charles, as you are well aware. I hope you two are very happy.'
‘Well thank you Lizzy, but I have not proposed yet.
Although I wish to every time I see and hear her. Are you going to get a bite to eat with Will?' He said as he gently rubbed her shoulders.
Lizzy nodded. Another tear sparkled in her eyes and Charles drew her in for another hug.
‘There there Lizzy...we love you very much here. Even Caroline can't completely dislike you.'
Here Lizzy laughed and Will found them embraced in another hug.
‘What are you two doing?' he asked playfully.
‘Oh come off Will. Lizzy just needed a hug. Now that I'm here though I think I should find my appointment book. I wanted to get a reservation for dinner one night this week...special occasion you know.' He winked at Lizzy.
Lizzy grinned.
‘Do you want to join us? We're just getting breakfast.'
‘No no go ahead. I'm meeting Jane for lunch later and I'll probably see you two after that. Have fun lovebirds. I'm off to call Jane!' And then Charles left the room. Lizzy followed Will, holding his hand and looking at the floor.
As they exited the house, they decided that they would drive separately to Lizzy's and then take Will's car to breakfast.
When they reached the apartment, Lizzy turned into her parking spot and then transferred herself to Will's BMW.
‘I feel silly for this morning...for all of this Will.'
He took her hand and gave it a tight squeeze.
‘Please don't. I was only concerned for you and wanted you to be okay. I'm glad we got through all of this. I don't think I could stand to see you upset or hurt for another moment.'
After a light breakfast, to make room for lunch, Will took Lizzy back to her place, where they decided to watch a movie before lunch.
As she grabbed something for them to drink, Will decided he would call his lawyer, Frank Brandson to have him do a bit of checking on the Clays. He moved to the outdoor balcony and placed his call.
‘Brandson.' A dull voice answered.
‘Frank it's Will Darcy.'
‘Darcy! Good to hear from you. Uh...suppose you want to get an update on Wickham eh?'
‘Well I didn't call about it, although I would like one. Do you have any news?'
‘Well from what Marsh told me he's been on his tracks but hasn't found anything. Seems he's been real good at covering himself up. I wouldn't lose hope. Marsh has his men trailing Wickham's friends too. I'm sure something will come up. Sorry Will.'
Will frowned. He was worried about it, but with everything that was going on at here he had pushed it out of the way.
‘It's okay Frank, just keep me posted on this. If the case breaks I need to know. Wickham won't just leave us alone...he's after something...or someone.' He paused and then shook himself out of his reverie.
‘Anyways, I was calling because I have an important case I need you to help me with.'
‘Oh?'
‘Yes, it's regarding my girlfriend,' he said proudly and smiled at using the term for the first time,' she's in a bit of a spot you see.'
‘A girlfriend? Why Fitzwilliam Darcy! When did this happen? As long as I've known you...say weren't you engaged to Caroline Bingley?'
Frank Brandson was also the lawyer of Charles and therefore knew Caroline from his visits to town to go through cases etc. Caroline being very interested in what Charles did with his money, was always present at those meetings.
‘Uh yes, well...I called it off for personal reasons and it's been okay since. She's accepted it I dare say.'
‘You must then because I remember...oh well...anyways, what kind of trouble is your little lady in?' He ended with a chuckle.
After Will related the information, Frank advised him to keep Lizzy from contact of the Clays for a while until he could figure out a plan.
‘Well now Frank I just need you to do a bit of checking on it. I don't want Lizzy to know about this. Her father, uncle, and brother are lawyers too and she is having them handle the case, however, I thought that a bit of help from you wouldn't hurt since you have some hold on people.'
Frank chuckled.
‘Uh yeah I do but I'll look into it on my own. I won't let anyone know. Which lawyers is she related to?'
‘Her father is Thomas Bennet. I believe her brother is James Bennet.'
‘Hmm...Bennet and Gardiner Law I imagine. Only firm I know of a Bennet...' a lengthy pause was evaded on the phone and then right when Will was going to say something, Frank cried out.
‘Bennet!! I know who you're talking about. Yes...James Bennet his son is very talented. Works like a dog to get his case done right and is smart...very smart. Well I don't think your girlfriend will have any problems with this case. Her brother and father and even her uncle are very good at what they do. I know them a little. I'll keep you in touch with what I find though okay?'
‘Sure. Again though, this is confidential and not to be known by any Bennet or relation. Understand Frank?'
‘On my honor. I'll talk to you soon.'
Will hung up and went back inside finding Lizzy on the couch waiting for him with a smile.
‘You look adorable wrapped up waiting for me.'
Lizzy smiled.
‘Are you ready? I called Jane and she said that Charles and her were doing a bit of shopping and then they'll come back here for lunch.'
‘Good...that gives us some time to be alone...together.' Will said huskily and Lizzy grinned. But not for long did she grin, as his lips were firmly pressed against hers and soon the movie was forgotten by Will's kissing Lizzy.
Ahh but it did not last long as Lizzy's phone rang and she reluctantly pushed away from Will to answer.
‘Hello?'
‘Lizzy! It's Marianne. How are you? Did everything go all right?' Lizzy smiled when she heard Marianne's voice. The night she left Will's place she had met up with Marianne and the rest of the female wedding party as she actually forgot she had to do some planning with them. She related the events to Elinor and Marianne as they took a break from planning. Marianne was upset and Elinor concerned.
‘Actually it's a good story to tell you in it all but I won't go into it right now. What's up?'
Marianne sighed and then went on,
‘Well...I have some bad news. The church and reception hall we booked were already booked in advance so now we have no place for a wedding or a reception. I'm so livid I could scream...again.'
‘Oh no. Marianne I'm so sorry what can I do?' She asked and gave Will a look of concern which he answered with a look of curiosity.
‘I don't know. Robert doesn't know yet since I just got the call. I'm at my mom's right now and she's about to go frantic. Oh and to top it off, Margaret's dress was done in lavender and not peach like I specifically stated. Don't laugh at me Lizzy...it's not funny.'
Lizzy was indeed laughing.
‘If you think it's so funny, I'll have your dress in aqua. Wait...no then you wouldn't be in my wedding...ugh I hate this. What am I going to do Lizzy?' She asked determined.
‘I'm surprised you have such a cool about this. But you always were that way weren't you?' Lizzy sighed, ‘ I don't know what you're going to do. The wedding is in seven months! How could this be happening? Hold on Marianne.'
Lizzy covered the mouth piece and looked at Will.
‘To answer that look Will...Marianne is on the phone and the church and reception hall have been double booked so now she has no place for a wedding or party.'
Will frowned and Lizzy went back to the line.
‘Sorry, Will's here and he kept looking at me for information.'
‘Will? Wait...Will Darcy? Lizzy what the...you have some explaining to do!'
Lizzy shook her head and smiled.
‘I don't have to do anything of the sort. Now maybe we should get together and think this through huh?'
Will tapped Lizzy on the shoulder.
‘Let's meet with them tonight. I have a to see Robert anyways.'
Lizzy nodded.
‘Tonight okay? We could meet at...' She caught Will pointing to himself and then continued,' at Will's house. Is that okay?'
‘Uh...yeah sure that's fine.' Marianne answered with defeat. She was so beyond the wedding planning she was at the point of not having one at all.
‘Okay...let's say...seven tonight.'
‘You will explain everything Elizabeth Bennet...you know this.'
‘Of course I will...but now I have to snuggle with my boyfriend. Bye!'
‘What!' Marianne cried out but it was too late...the line was dead.
Charles and Jane returned with lunch from a local café and after lunch the four of them started talking about all sorts of things. Soon the subject turned on Marianne and Robert's wedding.
‘That's terrible! I can't believe that would happen to them.' Jane cried in horror when Lizzy told her and Charles what Marianne said.
‘What are they going to do?' Charles asked. Lizzy shrugged and looked down at her feet. Will, who sat next to her holding her hand, broke off his stare into space and smiled.
‘I have an idea.' He said.
Everyone looked at him.
‘I have something that might make things work.'
‘Well you can't say that in front of us!' Lizzy cried and let go of his hand.
‘I know what I'm doing love. Don't worry, you'll find out soon enough.'
Will had left early to get things ready at his place and Lizzy came to Will's with Jane and Charles. Jane had never been so when they got there, she was happily stunned.
As Will took her through a tour, Charles and Lizzy happily started opening up some wine for dinner. The wedding party wouldn't be there for another two hours, so they had time to have dinner.
After the tour, Will started dinner with Jane's help and Charles and Lizzy set the table and kept them company.
After dinner, there was enough time to clean up and wait for the rest of the party to come. Marianne and Robert were the first to come and then Edward and Elinor along with the girls mother Mrs. Dashwood and Margaret. About twenty minutes later, Emma and George sauntered in.
‘Well I'm glad you all could make it,' Robert started off in his deep slow voice,' and thank you Will for allowing us to meet here. Now I was told this afternoon from Marianne that the church and reception hall have been double booked, leaving us without a place so to speak for the wedding.'
‘Uh...if I may, Robert, I have an idea.' Will spoke up and grinned. Without any further ado, Will had Robert pulled into his office leaving everyone else in a hush and tense anticipation.
‘I wish he wouldn't do that.' Lizzy scowled and crossed her arms. Charles merely chuckled.
‘I think you'll like the surprise Lizzy.'
After a few moments, everyone started to gather in small groups to speak of different things, which Marianne used to get a chance to talk with Lizzy.
‘Lizzy...' Marianne hissed, ‘ tell me what's going on!' She drew closer to Lizzy and set her eyes straight for hers.
‘Whatever do you mean?' she chuckled and then became serious.
After relaying the events of the past few days, Lizzy finally felt a weight being lifted from her shoulders. She smiled broadly at Marianne who in turn was plastered with the look of love on her face for her best friend.
‘You and Will!! I'm beyond happy for you two. You deserve this! He deserves you! Oh I'm so glad he dumped Caroline way back when I was thrilled, but now I'm beyond that! Oh Lizzy!'
‘I know! I'm happy with him. He and I have such a great time together. He's always there for me.'
‘Sounds like it with everything that's happened since he got back. Robert told me he hadn't seen him since the pub and just when he got a minute to tell me, he said that he's glowing more than before.'
Lizzy blushed and was about to say something when Robert appeared behind Marianne and whispered in her ear.
‘What?! Are you serious?' Her lips broke into a wide smile and her eyes were shining. Lizzy looked on with confusion as did the rest of the room who heard her cry. She looked behind Robert and saw Will standing in the hallway with his hands in his pockets and a crooked smile on his face.
Marianne turned to Will and practically bounded onto him, after seeing Robert nod, and started kissing his cheeks.
‘Thank you thank you thank you! Oh you don't know how much this means to me...to us! Will how can we ever repay you?'
‘No need...I'm glad to help.'
‘Well?' Elinor asked from across the room and Marianne turned to see the panicked yet hopeful faces of everyone looking at her.
'Will has done the best thing ever!' Marianne cried and went over to Robert who gave her a huge hug.
Will searched for Lizzy's eyes, which didn't take very long since he was looking at her the whole time and she to him, and drank up her appearance at the look of shock on her face.
She didn't know what to do. Smile? Pout? Look confused? She searched his face for some answer. Instead she only got an all knowing grin and she started to look annoyed.
He nodded his head slightly while Marianne was still in a state of happy shock and then, stepping closer to the living room, smiled and looked at the happy couple before locking his eyes on Lizzy and making his announcement.
‘As my wedding gift to Marianne and Robert, should you both wish to do this, I would be honored if you would use my family's estate as your wedding ceremony and reception site.' Will said his eyes never leaving Lizzy's.
The whole room was in stunned amazement and Marianne was smiling like a fool although everyone seemed to be waiting to hear more.
Charles, however, as well as Robert, knew exactly what he was talking about. So did George who stood in the corner with Emma who was smiling and shining proudly at their close friend for such a wonderful gift.
Will seemed to notice that not everyone knew which home he was speaking of. Being that he had this one and the one in England, along with a place in Kentucky and New York, the people who knew him knew he had many places to afford a beautiful ceremony.
‘Uh...I'm talking about my estate in England...Pemberley.'
That was enough for everyone, because the rest of the party who was waiting to hear immediately cried for joy and soon Will was bombarded with Marianne crying out her joy and thank yous to Will.
‘Well I haven't finished. I also want to fly everyone out on my behalf. Everyone on the guest list including the wedding party and any one who is participating in the wedding. It's my gift to you Marianne...Robert.' Will said and shook hands with Robert. This part he hadn't told Robert and was news to everyone. . She jumped into his arms and immediately began to kiss his cheeks and smile goofy.
‘Oh Will thank you (kiss) thank you (kiss) thank you (kiss---a bit longer on the cheek)! I am so happy I feel I'm dreaming!'
Will blushed and then nodded with a laugh.
‘I don't know how to thank you Will. This is wonderful. I know that Marianne and I are quite...shocked at such kindness.' Robert stated calmly and grinned. Will came next to him and put a hand on his shoulder.
‘Anything for you dear friend. Anything at all.'
Meanwhile, Lizzy stood in her place completely shocked and unsure of what to do next. She was overwhelmed with happiness and felt her heart wrench at watching Darcy widely grin and blush at the thank yous he was receiving, the hugs and the kisses from the women who appreciated his gift.
Before she could react to anything, she felt Will place his eyes on her again and with a small smile, she started to jog across the great room and into his arms which he held open for her.
She immediately jumped onto him and began to happily sob. Instead of kissing him over and over and excitedly telling him thank you thousand times over, she just simply set herself down and hugged him. They stood there for what seemed days. Both of them didn't notice anyone around hugging each other, talking excitedly about wedding plans, or even laughing and daydreaming about what Pemberley was like. Instead, Will and Lizzy were caught only in their own romance of holding each other knowing exactly how the other one felt.
Will held her so close and rested his cheek against her soft hair. He took a slight breath in and smelled her hair of honey and soft perfume. He was so happy and he felt complete. He knew that this meant so much to her and to the rest of the party, but they didn't matter as much as she did. She was the only one he truly loved and cared for.
Lizzy inhaled his strong cologne and almost melted right there. She closed her eyes and held tightly to his broad and strong frame. He felt so good and she didn't want to let go. Immediately, she knew that this was right. Everything in her mind from Elliot to his family, to work, and to her future was simply lost to her. She only cared for him.
Will let break the hold of them together and held her at elbow length. He smiled down upon her and she looked up into his deep brown eyes. Her mouth was slightly open and she leaned up against him as he bent towards her. Into his ear she murmured thank you and downcast her eyes to the floor. He grinned and softly rubbed her arm while hearing his name called from the kitchen were everyone was assembled for a drink.
Will guided Lizzy into the kitchen and handed her a glass of champagne that Charles had found in the refrigerator.
‘Now I would like to make a toast.' Beamed Charles. ‘ To Will for the best gift that our dear friends have received to celebrate their wedding and beginning to a beautiful marriage. However, I would just like to say thank you to Will for having us all now try to find a better gift than this to top you with.'
Everyone laughed and clinked together and sipped their champagne. Marianne then spoke up.
‘You're attendance is merely a beautiful gift in itself. I don't need anything except you all there to share our wedding with us.' She said and smiled uncontrollably. She continued in the way the rest of the night. All of the present company were ecstatic for the beloved couple.
After many preparations were made with the wedding party, they all decided to call it a night and depart. Lizzy and Jane were the last to leave as Charles had received a ride home from George and Emma since he was very tired and didn't want to keep Jane from celebrating. The girls helped Will clean up and after the last glass was dried and safely put away, Jane went to don her coat and start the car.
Will held the door open and gave Jane a warm hug and a peck on the cheek goodbye.
‘Thank you so much Will. This is too much for words but it's so wonderful.'
‘Thank you Jane. It really is nothing I assure you. I wanted to do this.'
Jane hugged him again and told Lizzy she would wait outside and to take her time. Lizzy was slow at getting her coat on, not wanting to leave Will but very tired from the day's events. Will helped her with her coat and then placed her large hands firmly on her petite shoulders. He then slid his arms around her waist and rested his chin on her shoulder. He swayed her side to side humming softly and Lizzy closed her eyes and lightly groaned.
‘Will...on behalf of Marianne and Robert...from everyone here to tonight...thank you...thank you so much for doing this. Marianne is so happy and now she can have the wedding she wanted. They truly do not understand how much indebted we are for you making her so happy. I know that hearing her today I wasn't sure what she was going to do. Robert has money enough but most of it they can't get back because of the down payments and as we know Marianne's family has little to no extra funds to help pay for the wedding. I just...I am so thankful that you are doing this for her.
Will slowly pulled himself up and straightened. He then turned Lizzy around to face him and tried to smile which turned into a effort to grin.
‘Hmm...well Lizzy I didn't do this for her.'
Lizzy looked confused.
‘What do you mean? How could you not want to do this for her?'
Will shifted in his spot and looked away from her, before he answered he then turned his eyes determinedly at her own and stopped shifting his feet.
‘I didn't do it for her because...as much as I care for Robert and Marianne and I want to help them...well I didn't think of them when I did it. I wanted to do this for them but the reason for my doing all of this is for only one absolute reason.'
Lizzy didn't bat an eyelash. Instead she was firmly looking at him waiting for him to continue and firmly her shoulders turned square. If not for them then why?
He didn't need a verbal response to continue. Her face alone made it easy yet difficult to answer.
‘Lizzy do not thank me on their behalf. In fact if you will thank me let it be for yourself alone. Marianne, Robert, her family, everyone here tonight owe me nothing. As much as I respect them and love them, I know I thought only of you.'
Lizzy audibly gasped and her eyes faltered to the floor. She didn't know what to say. Slightly embarrassed yet overwhelmingly happy, she droped her shoulders and they started to shake. Her head thrown down to her chest, Will immediately didn't know what to do. Was she crying? Was she laughing?
Before he could ask, Lizzy lifted her head and Will saw a tear escape her beautiful eyes and a smile spread across her face.
‘Will...you did? For me? Out of everyone you could of done this for you did this for me?'
Will let out a deep sigh at seeing her okay and smiled. He then shrugged as if it was apparent and smiled.
‘Oh Will!' She cried and leapt into his arms.
‘Lizzy I love you...seeing you this afternoon confirmed that might I be able to make you happy in any possible way, I would be able to make many more so. But your happiness is all I want. Whether it be with me or not at all. I only want you truly happy. Tonight...this announcement is nothing to what I am prepared to do in making you pleased. You deserve so much and I am only too delighted to be the one to do anything for you my...darling love.' He burst out and held her tightly.
They pressed against each other until Lizzy heard Jane's horn beep. She jumped back a bit only at hearing the sound and Will started to laugh.
‘Go on...we can talk later. Please be safe and call me tomorrow.'
Lizzy nodded and left but not without kissing her sweetheart goodbye for another full few minutes.
The Monday morning grind wasn't as bad as Lizzy had expected. Albeit she was rethinking over and over her weekend. She was most particularly thinking about the conversation that led up to Will's decision about Pemberley for the wedding.
‘I can't believe that the places were double booked. I have no idea what she's going to do.' Lizzy said as she lifted her head from Will's chest. It was only 30 minutes after the phone call and she couldn't stop thinking about it. What would happen? How was she going to fix this?
‘Darling I'm sure Robert and Marianne can figure something out.'
‘Will I'm not so sure. Marianne wanted to get married on this day she has planned since he asked her. It's already a really booked day from all the other places she went to. They don't have a ton of money but I know that Robert is paying for pretty much everything. He even dipped a bit into his 401k to help ease some of the expenses. Not that you probably don't know this already but I just...I know how much this means to her and if she won't get married that day I'm sure she would wait another year to do it again. I just can't believe a double booking! Who does that?'
Will was silent as Lizzy lay tense next to him thinking about Marianne. She deserved this so much. After Willioughby, she vowed never to marry or get involved again, but when Robert came to her side to comfort her and just listen to her...he changed her life forever. She found herself in love before she knew it and he was already in love the day they met years prior. They were destined for each other. And now she was going to marry him after a year's engagement and it seemed to be crumbling in front of her.
‘She didn't sound at all well when we were on the phone. I only hope that she will find something soon. I feel so heartbroken for her and even more so should nothing turn up for her.'
‘She's your best friend?' Will treaded.
‘Apart from Jane yes. She and I are very close. She deserves this happiness as does Jane who deserves an equal happiness if not both of them deserve more. They are two wonderful loving women.'
Lizzy smiled at the thought that this would have been his maker and not breaker to his decision. She was thrilled and Charlotte noted upon it when seeing her in the hallway on her way to lunch.
‘What's got you so happy Lizzy?'
Lizzy smiled and shook her head.
‘Nothing that I can describe into words. Only that Marianne will be married to Robert in England and all due to Will.' She said dreamily.
Charlotte, not really understanding a thing, raised her eyebrows and mouthed okay before diving into her own news.
‘Well I have something to tell you Lizzy.'
Lizzy, who tried hard not think about Will and what he was doing or even the past weekend, looked at Charlotte with interest.
‘What is it?'
‘Well...remember a few weeks ago when your mom wanted me to meet her boss, Dr. Collins?'
Lizzy sighed and nodded.
‘Well...I saw him and after one visit, he said he needed to see me again and so I did. And after that visit---‘
‘Is something wrong Charlotte? Are you okay?'
Charlotte half grinned and half smirked.
‘Yeah I'm fine...but anyways...I saw him again and after that visit he asked me out on a date. So I went and --‘
‘What?! You went out on a date with that toady! What the hell were you thinking!?'
‘Lizzy really...he's not that bad...in fact, we've been seeing each other a lot lately and to tell the truth...I think he's the one.'
‘What!' Lizzy shrieked and covered her mouth with her open hand.
‘What the hell Lizzy. Why can't I see him? He's sweet and kind, is a person who could possibly take care of me...I like him.'
‘I can't believe your saying this. Charlotte this is Dr. Collins. The man who is my mom's boss. The man I tell you horrid stories of and ones that you hear from my mother. How could you do this?' Lizzy hissed.
‘Easily. I just did. Look Lizzy...I might not have the perfect boyfriend like you do with Will and I might not have the wonderful looks like Jane or anything...I'm not a romantic freak like you and Marianne. I want to be taken care of. I like my things...I like my lifestyle and if that's what he can provide, then so be it. I choose him.'
Lizzy was shocked. She couldn't believe that Charlotte was actually seeing her mom's boss. A slimy gross man who was arrogant and impossible beyond all belief. If she thought Will was arrogant then he was angelic to this toad.
‘I-I Charlotte.' Lizzy paused for a breath and the right words. ‘ I shouldn't be quick to judge. I'm sorry, but I just...I think you could do better. You might not be romantic but you do have a heart and I'm sure your heart yearns for love...true love.'
‘Lizzy...I know what I want. He can provide that for me and should everything go as planned I'll be happy. I'll be content. Can't you be happy for me...just once?'
Lizzy bit her lip and slowly nodded. She gave Charlotte a hug and then after a few minutes of awkward sentences of meaningless conversation, the two departed.
Lizzy's day was restless. She couldn't get anything done thinking about Charlotte and Dr. Collins. Even Caroline was confused as to why Lizzy would send out a meeting reminder four times in a row for the same meeting. Caroline was back to her old self, dressed in her tight orange outfits and dark make up plastered to her face. She looked like a china doll, just not very pretty. Touch her and she might break.
Lizzy wasn't even aware of her nor anyone else for that matter. So when she got home later that day, she was surprised to find Jane not home at her usual time.
After feeding Jack and getting dressed in more comfortable attire, she was still puzzled at Jane's disappearance. She shook her head and called Jane's phone.
No answer.
She tried her work phone.
No answer.
Lizzy stood in bewilderment at the kitchen floor trying to think of where she could be. She then looked up and saw a note on the fridge door.
Lizzy-
Staying at Charles tonight. See you tomorrow after work.
Love
Jane
Blast! That's right. Jane was invited to Charles for dinner and a movie. No wonder she was staying over...
Lizzy laughed bitterly and looked to Jack who offered nothing but a wag of his tail and a plea for more food.
Before she could respond to Jack the phone rang in her hand and she answered.
‘Hello?'
‘Lizzy! Have you heard? Charlotte and my boss are together! I dare say he will propose to her very soon. I know that he likes her very much.'
‘hi mom...yeah I heard. I don't believe it...well...I can't think why she would want to be with him...but that's not something I should thin---‘
‘Oh stop it Lizzy...you could have had him you know but instead you have Will Darcy! Now that's a fine catch my dear. Just make sure to get a ring before Charlotte which I think will be very soon so you might want to---‘
‘Mom! I'm not going to listen to you go on about this nonsense any further...what do you want?'
‘Oh...well I called to see if Jane was home really. I wanted to ask her what shirt size Charles is. I found a beautiful sweater I wanted to get him and I --‘
‘She's not home. She's with Charles but I'll give her a message if you'd like.'
‘Oh! Splendid. No no...I'll call her tomorrow. Why aren't you out with Will darling?'
Lizzy sighed in frustration.
‘Mom...I had a really weird day today could I talk to you later?'
‘Oh sure Lizzy but don't forget to call Will!' And with that she hung up. Lizzy stared at amazement at the phone and then shook her head letting out a groan of more frustration before getting herself dinner and feeding half of it to Jack.
Later that evening, Lizzy got a call from Will. She was trying to watch a movie but failed and gladly accepted the interruption.
‘Hi love. How was your day?'
‘Hmm...Will did I ever tell you about my mom's boss? Dr. Collins?'
‘The one you seem to label as Toady? Yeah I remember him...why?'
‘Well Charlotte is dating him and I'm not very happy with it.' Lizzy frowned and Will chuckled.
‘It's not funny Will. I'm serious. She doesn't need to be dating him. Of all men...him?!'
‘Lizzy really...don't you think you're overreacting a bit? Charlotte has ever right to date whom ever she chooses and if Toady is the one she wants...then more to her. Aren't you glad your mother will stop trying to set you two up now?'
‘She hasn't been since she found out about us dating.' Lizzy blushed at saying it out loud.
‘Well I think that's a wonderful thing. More for me!'
‘Will! Stop it. I don't get it she could do so much better! Why him? Why her? She doesn't think she's a romantic person, or beautiful, or lucky...but she could be if she applied herself.'
There was a pause before Will responded.
‘Lizzy listen...she might not see what you see and telling her differently isn't going to help unless she wants to know. If she feels this is the way she wants to live her life then you have to let her. You can't make her own choices. You have to live your own life too.'
Lizzy stayed silent. For the first time since the beginning of her friendship with Charlotte, she felt she never knew her. Just then did she realize that they were never great friends as she thought they had been. Instead, they were merely two women who tried but failed at a close relationship. Charlotte was going to have to make the mistake that Lizzy saw her making through her eyes. However, to Charlotte, this was no mistake, just acceptance of the real world and she was determined to make the best she could of it.
After not hearing anything on Lizzy's end for a few minutes, Will ventured to speak.
‘Lizzy...I'm sorry about this. Really I am.'
‘Will it's okay...I just...I thought I knew her better than this. Instead...I guess I really don't. No matter though. I can't change it and I won't let myself get wrapped up in it any more...how was your day?'
‘Fine,' Wll said through a sigh, ‘ busy but good. Progress made as usual. But I'm not calling to talk about work. I was calling to talk to you.'
‘Just talk huh?'
‘Yeah...well that and about my sister. I just got off the phone with her. I wanted to thank you for calling her after the accident and letting her know. She's upset with me that I never called her until later but she's thankful she knew from you.'
‘How is she? I haven't talked to her since last week.'
‘She's good. She's working hard in school but very happy to hear that she's going to meet everyone and see old friends this summer.'
‘Oh good! I'm excited to meet her too.'
Will fell silent when he noticed an email come through on his laptop. He clicked on it and noticed it was from Frank Brandson.
The subject title was Found. Quickly Will opened the email and scanned its contents. Lizzy heard a deep sigh that sounded like he was holding onto it for ages emanate from Will's lips.
‘What's wrong Will?'
He shook his head and quickly spoke into the receiver.
‘They found him. I have to go Lizzy. I love you and will call you later if not tomorrow.'
Before she could respond, he hung up.
Jane and Lizzy were very thankful that the week was done and even more so that the weather was changing into spring quicker than it usually did. Marianne, Elinor, Emma, and the sisters gathered at a local restaurant after Friday's busy work day to vent, sigh, rejoice, and relax. Charlotte was unable to come and it seemed more and more distant between the two for Lizzy and her that they saw each other or even talked. In fact, Charlotte had told Lizzy that she wasn't going to be able to do the weekly singing at the pub since Dr. Collins and her had planned other things for those nights.
Lizzy was bummed but quickly reverted to her old self and shrugged it off. She would miss Charlotte but understood that this was the way it would be and for the price of being happy, she would have to accept that both her and Charlotte had different views.
Lizzy decided to pause on the local singing and concentrate on her schoolwork and friends. Tonight she was happy to be able to spend with her friends and sister and just relax. It had proven to be a interesting week. Will had left town to go to Paris where he had some urgent business to attend to on Tuesday morning. He didn't know when he would be back, but would keep in touch and did so through constant emails and phone calls to Lizzy and occasionally Charles.
She was very happy that Jane was able to come out and noticed that Jane always made time to be with the people she was with before Charles entered her life. Tuesday nights were always their night, dinner with dad seemed to slowly halt but that was due to a case he was working on with Nicholas and his brother-in-law. To tell the truth it was Lizzy's case, but she was told not to worry and didn't, knowing that things would work out...or so she hoped.
Jane was happy to be with her friends and sister too. She loved being with Charles, but she also treasured the people she spent so much of her free time with before her new blossoming relationship. She was happy to see them all delighted with how things were going for each other and themselves.
When they all finished their dinner and sighed at their decision to accept dessert, Emma spoke up with a smile on her lips.
‘I'm really glad we were able to do this.' She said and flicked back her long blonde hair to stay on her slender back. Everyone nodded and then fell silent.
‘Well...I know that this group means the world to me. Yes it's nice and actually quite wonderful to have a man but you all are so much to my life that it wouldn't matter who I was with should I not have friends to share it with.' Elinor stated.
‘Hmm...yes...isn't it odd how we all have a man now? Quite...interesting.' Marianne piqued and then felt a napkin hit her head. She turned to Lizzy and laughed.
‘Oh come on Lizzy you have to admit it!' She cried out with her eyes sparkling.
‘What women say when their in love! I don't think I ever want to hear you again speak about hooking people up, Marianne, when you know perfectly well that it will work out for them in their own end.'
‘Now Lizzy what's that supposed to mean?' Marianne quipped back.
Lizzy smiled coyly and started to blush.
‘It just means...that things have a certain way...to happen for people no matter what. We all have a story to tell and we all are in love. I just don't think that hooking people up had anything to do with it even though you like to take credit for it at times.'
‘Lizzy! Whatever do you mean?' Marianne tried to feign innocence but the group laughed at her.
‘I think you've got a point Lizzy. Edward and I didn't get on through anyone. Even though Marianne insisted it was all her.' Elinor stated as she popped a forkful of gooey chocolate from her plate into her pink mouth.
‘Exactly. You didn't do anything Marianne.'
Marianne started to pout and when she looked up from her crossed arms, she started to giggle as did everyone else.
‘Fine! So I didn't hook everyone up here but don't say I didn't try!'
They all laughed again and after the bill was paid, they gathered at the front of the restaurant.
‘Would you guys like to come back to our place?' Jane asked and they immediately agreed.
Once inside of the apartment, the ladies made themselves comfortable and started to chat about their men.
‘I really wish you guys could see how happy you are when you're with him...I mean your guy.' Jane said as she sipped her glass of water.
‘Yes same for you too Jane. I think we can all safely say that we are truly blessed and should be happy for each other as we are for ourselves.' Elinor proudly stated calmly and rubbed her hand on Jane's forearm.
‘True. What a happy thought indeed!' Lizzy said and smiled as she thought of Will.
‘Well I know that you Lizzy are quite lucky to have a man like Will. Of course we all are but you must be very happy to have him. Especially after Caroline!' Marianne said.
‘Hmm...I didn't steal him away from her. He ended that quite on his own I dare say. But I am lucky. In fact, I'm very blessed with him and I care for him so dearly.'
‘I wonder how much longer before you all get proposed to!' Marianne cried out and upon hearing this Jack's head came up from resting on Lizzy's feet and he started to bark. This made everyone giggle.
‘Well I don't know about that, but it would be nice.' Emma said.
‘Oh come on Emma. You and George have been dating a while in fact.' Elinor said turning her head to look at her.
Emma smiled elegantly and then looked down at her glass.
‘Yes we have. Three years in fact. I just...I thought he would by now but I haven't seen anything and I don't think he's going to.'
‘Why not? He has to!' Marianne called out.
Emma blushed.
‘Well maybe he will. It's just not something we have talked about. You never know though. I know we all deserve it.'
Lizzy smiled but inside she wasn't sure. Marriage? She wasn't sure she was ready. True she loved Will, but she wasn't through with school, she wanted to travel, she wanted to live on her own for a while and support herself. She wasn't able to do that ever. In fact she was looking forward to it. She decided to not think about it as Jane declared it was time for a few drinks.
Soon a few drinks led to a few more and then a few more led to empty bottles and tipsy women. Jack was in wonderment while watching Lizzy and her friends and after getting no attention except a few pats on the head, he retreated to a corner to try and sleep.
Elinor and Emma were cold out on the couch and floor. Leaving a very drunk Marianne in the company of Jane and Lizzy.
‘Liz..zz..zzy...I ju-us wannnt to telll youu that Willl is a very very lucky mann...' Marianne slurred while holding her last shot of vodka in her hand.
‘You...you are lucky tooo' Lizzy tried to manage better though than Marianne.
‘In fact...I have...have...it...on (hiccup) on real auth---thorittteee that Will...oh jane! Jane Jane Jane!' Marianne giggled and put her weight on Jane's side as she tried to hug her. Jane wasn't as drunk, but she was feeling effects from her shots.
‘I want yyyooouuu to knoooowww....that I have hear-hear---dd that Charlllesss is going to propossee to you...in fact, he's going to do it...Eeek!!!' Marianne let out and Jane instantly felt sober. Upon hearing this Lizzy felt more sober but still took her last shot.
‘What?!' Jane asked with a grin.
‘Yep! Jane and Charles...engaged!' Marianne smiled and raised her hand with her glass and then took her final shot.
‘Are you sure?' Jane asked and Lizzy straightened up and smiled at Jane.
Marianne turned her shot glass upside down and frowned as she shook it to find no more left.
‘All gone...' She whispered sadly and then giggled.
‘Marianne! Are you sure?' Lizzy cried at her friend who stumbled back and fell onto the floor. In an instant a peel of laughter was heard from Marianne and Lizzy knew she was beyond sober hope. She turned to Jane and smiled.
‘Jane...oh Jane...if it is...' She let herself stop.
Jane looked around the room and was in bewilderment herself.
‘Oh Lizzy! Oh Lizzy...if it is...I will be...oh Lizzy...I would be the happiest woman in the world!'
Later on the next morning, Lizzy woke up with a screaming headache and blinding vision. Sunlight streamed into her bedroom where she found Marianne and Jack trying to sleep. She quickly shut her drapes and groggily got out of bed. There was a ringing in her ears that wouldn't go away. It was pause for a minute and then return.
Her bedroom door opened and a half asleep Jane walked into the room with a phone in her hand.
‘Here...it's Will.' She said deadpanned and walked back out of the room shutting the door after she thrust the phone into Lizzy's barely grasping hand.
‘Hello?' She tried to manage.
‘Lizzy? It's Will. Is...everything okay?'
She paused and tried to run a hand through her knotted hair that was already half up and half down. She must of slept with it up during the night.
‘Uh yeah...yeah everything's fine. What's up?'
‘I just...I didn't get a call from you last night and was wondering if everything was okay? You seem out of it.'
‘Oh it's nothing.' She swatted her hand in the air and closed her eyes tight.
‘I just woke up and have a headache...I can't see very well either.'
‘What? Well where's Jane? Have you told her? Why don't you go to the ER?!' He said hurriedly and was stopped by Lizzy's giggling and then a hurt ‘oww stop talking'.
‘What? Lizzy what's going on? Are you hurt? Who's there with you?' His tone was firm and this made Lizzy sober a bit more.
‘Will I'm fine. I just...I have a hangover from last night.'
‘A hangover? What were you doing?' He asked hurt.
‘Uh well...a hangover is caused from drinking too much. So I guess that's what I did.'
‘With who?'
Lizzy winced at the tone of his voice and then realized she did nothing wrong.
‘With some of my friends. In fact if you must know, with Marianne, Emma, Elinor, and Jane. Happy now?' She retorted.
Will was silent. Lizzy felt a growl come from inside but it wasn't from hunger. There was nothing said by both of them. Lizzy soon volunteered to invoke a response from him.
‘Will?'
‘I have to go Lizzy. I'll call you later.'
And before she could reply, he hung up.
Lizzy let the phone drop onto her dresser and she slowly walked out of her room with Jack following her. She let him out and then went to the kitchen seeing on her way Emma and Elinor still asleep.
‘Morning.' Jane tried to say quietly.
‘Murn...' Lizzy couldn't speak. She didn't let it register for a few moments what her conversation with Will was, but after her first sip of hot chocolate, she sobered and realized what had happened.
‘Call him back.' Jane offered after Lizzy heatedly told her what happened.
‘Why?' Lizzy bitterly replied.
‘Why should I call him back? I didn't hang up. I didn't do anything wrong. I'm of age to drink and in my own home.'
‘I don't think that's what he's thinking. He knows you are. But I think he was just...hurt but not knowing.' Jane tried.
Lizzy scoffed.
‘Well I don't need to tell him everything I do do I? I'm my own person. I can do what I want' She called out a bit higher than her usually speaking voice and then stopped when her head began to hurt.
Jane smiled. She was feeling better and then started to think about Charles.
‘Do you think he'll propose soon?'
‘Hmm? Oh oh...well I think he's thinking about it. I don't know when, but Jane I'm sure you will marry him and have ten children! Which I will happily watch while you two go out and be romantic with each other.'
Jane smiled and then took another sip of her tea.
‘I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding with Will Lizzy. Give him a call.'
Lizzy smiled defeat and nodded. She took a shower, got dressed and woke up Marianne who was the last to get ready. Emma and Elinor were already in the kitchen having tea or coffee and Marianne slowly joined them. After they all got ready, they decided to have some brunch and went off to go to the same restaurant they had dinner at to have brunch at. Emma, Elinor, and Marianne were too grogged and hungry to notice they had worn the same clothes as last night to care. They enjoyed the warm simple food they were served outside on the patio where the cool warmth of the sun shined on the crowd. Jane was the most sober one of them all and the rest were slowly coming back to life.
After brunch, Emma decided she would need to go home and sleep the rest of the afternoon. Elinor and Marianne agreed to the declaration and they all laughed.
‘I think we're going to head on out. I feel fine to drive you two home.' Emma said and after goodbyes were made, Lizzy and Jane headed back to their place. On the way Jane kept encouraging Lizzy to call Will saying that an breach between them wasn't good if it could be mended. Lizzy knew Jane was right even though she was confused as to why he was acting coolly to her on the phone but decided to call him anyways.
When they returned, Lizzy grabbed the house phone and punched in his mobile number. She crouched up on the couch with Jack laying on the opposite side.
No answer came from his mobile phone, so she left him a message.
‘Will...it's me. I just wanted to let you know that I don't really understand what happened this morning, but I was out with the girls last night for dinner and then we came back to my place and had a few drinks. I'm okay and I feel better I just...' quickly she sputtered the words until she head the doorbell buzzer. Jane went to answer the door while Lizzy was trying to concentrate on what to say next. When Jane opened the door and trying to hush Jack from his incessant barking, she found a delivery of fresh cut white daisies cheerfully saying hello. Lizzy went over trying to say a few more words before getting cut off and then when Jane said they were from Will as the card inside had stated.
Lizzy quickly scanned the card.
Lizzy-Sorry for this morning...
Love always,
Will
She then breathed into the phone as her mind was reeling with confusion and delight, ‘Thank you.' and heard the tone of the message ending.
Will was astonished when he read his lawyer's email. He felt relief, comfort, and anger wash over him. A huge weight was slightly lifted but ever present on his shoulders.
He was quick to let Lizzy go since he was wanting to attend to the matter at hand immediately before time was to be wasted. He hadn't meant to cut her short and leave her confused, but after writing the necessary reply back to Brandson, making immediate departure plans and checking in with Georgie, he wrote her an email to tell her of his apology and information informing her he was to go to Paris for the week at least and not sure when he was to return. He promised to write and call her whenever he could.
He had to read the email from Brandson once more before signing off and getting dressed to leave.

Darcy-
Marsh got in touch with me letting me know that he has trailed Wickham to Paris. Seems that's where his friends so to speak are hiding out too. Unsure of details. You might want to plan on coming out here just so you can get the closure you need and to make sure we can settle this.
According to the information Marsh transmitted to me, Wickham is staying in Paris for as long as he can. Seems to be cooking something up.
-Brandson
Will smiled but understood that he wasn't finished yet. This was only half of the game plan so far. He needed to actually catch Wickham and put him behind bars. Somehow he felt that the chase and the trial would take a good long time. Knowing Wickham, it could take months. It already had been weeks to search him without getting caught. Now he needed to plan carefully and make sure he was one step if not more ahead of him.
Will shut his computer down and went to his room. It was near nine o'clock and he was to leave in two hours for Paris. He packed his clothes, made sure everything in the house was safe and secure and left. Instead of taking his BMW, Will decided to take a hired car. He ordered it an hour previous.
He loaded himself into the hired car awaiting him and then was off to the Dulles airport where his private jet would be waiting.
Once he arrived in Paris, he was tired, but determined to catch up on the events. Brandson was to meet him at the hotel room he had booked for Darcy and himself.
Will checked in at the elegant hotel and sauntered up to his suite. He had a feeling that this was going to be home for a long while. He had the bellhop put his bags on his extra bed and moved to the bathroom where he freshened up.
A rapped knock was at the door and Will moved to answer. In the hallway stood a tall man in his late forties with dark red hair and a broad mustache. He had a broad frame and wore a light gray suit and dull black shoes. He grinned at Will and slipped on through.
‘Uh...yeah...hello Will.' His English gruff voice started as he took in Will's tired appearance.
‘Brandson.' Will replied and moved into the bathroom to put his hand towel away.
‘I thought I would catch you up with Marsh's improvements since your flight over. Ah huh I had the front desk phone me when you would get in. My room's just across the hall.'
Will nodded and sat down in the desk chair ready to hear Brandson out.
They went over details and plans. Brandson called Marsh who was at a hotel across town that faced the little flat Wickham seemed to be renting.
‘Okay...here's the story,' Brandson started once he was off the phone and Will, who was on his computer emailing Lizzy, paused to regard him.
‘According to Marsh, Wickham leaves his flat mostly at night and only once during the day. The time he usually leaves is around 11 am and at night anywhere between 10-3. He is always back at his flat before 5 am. He doesn't carry anything with him as in bags or anything like that. Instead he always wears a blue baseball cap and a rugged leather brown coat. He seems to wear the same clothes everyday. Probably stolen. He has no weapons that Marsh can speak for, but we are to be careful on this because he could have them hidden. Marsh is trying to figure out a way to search his place without being seen, but since he keeps such odd hours and is usually there most of the time anyways...it's hard to say.'
‘Any of the other two entering the building or leaving?'
‘We don't know. We haven't got any information on that.'
Will didn't speak. He shook his head. Silently saying a quick prayer for this to be swift and simple. Yet with Wickham nothing was simple.
‘Well we just need to watch and wait. Thanks Brandson.'
‘Now I don't want to go into particulars, but I can't say in all honesty that this is going to go smoothly. I'm here as your friend, but also to keep you out of trouble. Now I know that we made an agreement about this, but I can't say that I completely think that he is going to crack anytime soon. Therefore I don't think it would be a good idea, as your lawyer, to advise you to be on the scenes per se.'
Will frowned. He needed to watch every moment of this. He couldn't stay here and wait. He might as well go home then.
‘Look Frank...I know that we agreed that I would be apart of this anyway I can in all possible measures. I also feel that this is one of them. I need to be there and personally do this. If not he could slip away.'
Frank frowned with him and shook his head, hands on his hips and not saying a thing.
‘Will...just be safe. I don't need to go to trial for a murder case okay? And be conscience. I can't afford you to get out of everything...you're not completely perfect.'
Will laughed and slapped his hand on Frank's shoulder.
‘Count on it Frank, my perfection is nothing to your persuasive words.' He laughed again.
By the time Friday came, Will was beat. He was tired and nothing was happening at Wickham's flat. While waiting for him to make a move, all week Will was making preparations for the wedding at Pemberley. Guest rooms arranged, food ordered and the menu prepared. Robert was in contact with Will and emailing him, faxing him, and calling him about certain preparations that were needed during these crucial months. The wedding was only seven months away but Pemberley was a grand estate...a grand estate indeed and the better the preparation time, the better the event. Will had planned the wedding party to be there for a week at least and the guests would stay for the weekend. He made all the necessary arrangements with his housekeeper, Mrs. Reynolds and made sure that things would be perfect...more so for Lizzy.
This would be his time to proudly show her what meant so much to him. To show her where he grew up at and in the summers where he vacationed. The place he truly called home.
While he was on the phone for what seemed like the fiftieth time that day with his housekeeper, Frank barged into the room with a sack of lunch and two drinks. He set them down on the kitchenette counter and strolled over to where Darcy sat. He scanned the heavy notes Will had made or were making, looked and found a guest list and almost laughed out loud.
‘You're not getting married are you Darce? So soon?'
Will waved him off and Frank ignored him reading on down the list.
When Will finally got off the phone, he roughly threw a hand into his hair and then grabbed the list from Frank.
‘Frank...please. No I'm not getting married...not yet at least. This is for a few friends. Robert Brandon and Marianne Dashwood.'
Frank, who was now eating his sandwhich, nodded his head and said, ‘Ooohhh...yeah...Brandon and Dashwood. Hmm...Well what about your girlfriend how did this happen now?' He said with humor.
Will sighed and grinned.
‘I thought you were with Caroline Bingley.' Frank continued.
‘I was engaged to her. But I broke it off.' Here Will could tell Frank was looking for more and started to stammer.
‘Yes well...you see...Elizabeth is very special...she is nothing at all like Caroline Bingley. She's quite the opposite. Very charming, strong, gentle, and a very alive type of person.' He stammered through and wearily looked at Frank.
Frank held his gaze at Will knowing he wasn't explaining the whole truth. He looked down at Will who was a full two inches shorter than himself, and then smiled.
‘Admit it man...she's beautiful. You love her no doubt or you would never of broken off your engagement with that old duckface now would you!' Frank laughed and Will turned red.
‘She is beautiful, but damnit Frank that's not the only reason why I am with her. Caroline and I were over a long time ago. She's only after my money...my status. She doesn't know who I really am and Lizzy...well she does. She takes the time to learn, to understand me and to appreciate me. She sees more than money and status.'
‘So she knows about your other homes then eh? And you wealth and your companies and your --‘
‘Yes yes Frank...I've told her everything I can think of. I wanted to be honest with her and I am. I'm not an idiot. But I didn't tell her that to get her attention. She was surprised but that didn't change her affection towards me.'
‘Of course not. Of course not. I would never think of it. I only know though that finding someone with all your capital and status, funds and well...just by who you are...it's not easy for her I'm sure. But if you two truly loved each other, or even cared for each other...that wouldn't matter. I'm proud and happy for you Will.'
Will smiled and Frank handed him his sandwich.
Will hadn't heard from Lizzy like she had stated in her email earlier to him. While he was ordering dinner, he decided to give her a call since it would be nearly lunchtime in Virgina.
When it had picked up Jane answered.
‘Hello?' She whispered.
‘Jane? It's Will. Could I speak to Lizzy?'
‘Hmm yeah...just a minute.'
Will could hear muffled sounds and Jane padding into another room. He then heard Jack and then heard Jane announce it was him on the phone. There was silence until he heard Lizzy slowly answer hello.
‘Hello?'
‘Lizzy? It's Will. Is...everything okay?' He said concerned.
There was a pause and he heard her making some sort of hush sound.
‘Uh yeah...yeah everything's fine. What's up?'
‘I just...I didn't get a call from you last night and was wondering if everything was okay? You seem out of it.'
‘Oh it's nothing.' She sounded groggy.
‘I just woke up and have a headache...I can't see very well either.'
‘What? Well where's Jane? Have you told her? Why don't you go to the ER?!' He said hurriedly thinking the worst. Before he could go on, Lizzy started giggling and then as if she was talking to someone else she seemed to be whispering
‘Oww stop talking'. She almost whined.
‘What? Lizzy what's going on? Are you hurt? Who's there with you?' He tried to be firm so as to get a reaction from her to answer.
‘Will I'm fine. I just...I have a hangover from last night.'
‘A hangover? What were you doing?' He asked hurt. Was she with another man? What was she dong getting drunk? He never knew her to do that sort of thing.
‘Uh well...a hangover is caused from drinking too much. So I guess that's what I did.'
‘With who?' His mind was racing and he felt a pang at his stomach.
‘With some of my friends. In fact if you must know, with Marianne, Emma, Elinor, and Jane. Happy now?' She retorted.
Will was silent. He had been wrong but he still felt upset that she would do something like that.
‘Will?'
‘I have to go Lizzy. I'll call you later.'
And before she could reply, he hung up.
After he ate his dinner he thought over his conversation with Lizzy. He then laughed at himself for being so stupid.
She's a grown adult! She can do whatever she wants and she was with friends. Close friends at that. How stupid he was to jump to conclusions. But moreover he was worried. He was hoping that she wasn't out getting drunk and was being responsible for drinking. He didn't want to lose her to stupidity like drunk driving. Jane sounded okay but then again, she didn't say much and usually she chats with him while getting Lizzy.
He decided that he made a pompous a$$ decision and that he was wrong for taking things so far. Immediately, he dialed a local flower shop in Lizzy's area, a number he had on hand from when he was with Caroline, and ordered a dozen of daisies and a card to be sent over straight away. He felt like a fool.
He only wanted her to be safe. He hoped she would get them in time.
As he was about to go to bed, he received a call. Thinking it was Lizzy, he answered with hope.
‘Lizzy?'
‘Mr. Darcy? It's Marsh.'
‘Oh hello Marsh. How can I help you?'
Darcy let out a small sigh as he waited to hear any news developing...if any.
‘Two men have just entered the flat and they look to be the other two who escaped with Wickham. I've called the local authorities to be on stand by since they know the situation. I wanted---‘
Marsh couldn't continue since Will interjected him.
‘No Marsh, please call off the authorities. I'm not having them involved directly. I'll call Brandson and get over there. I might be able to take care of things myself.'
After Darcy hung up he went to get Brandson who refused for Will to go over there himself.
‘I have to do this Frank. I can talk to him and persuade him for a time.'
‘No. I won't have it. You could get hurt and we don't know what he has over there. Besides that we should leave this to the authorities. We're not apart of the law like that. I'm not at least. I have no badge and let me remind you that you don't either.'
Will frustratingly sighed at Frank and then urgently let his mind rapidly think of other ways to persuade him.
‘Frank, okay we could have the guys come in and take over, arrest them and take him away, but why not send me in there and let me talk to him. Maybe I could get him to tell me something about what he's up to. According to the system he's technically free. Therefore he can't really be arrested without reasonable cause.'
Frank pondered but refused slowly. He shook his head and after a few more minutes of debate, reasoning, and an agreement of officials going in to join him while he went in, Frank agreed.
Will was quite pleased and went to get ready.
Marsh was waiting for Darcy, the officials, and Brandson to meet him while he was watching Wickham. It didn't seem that they were doing anything out of the ordinary but then again, maybe they were and just weren't displaying that. Marsh was sure that he wasn't seen by Wickham or the other men, so they should be showing their true actions.
Wickham then made some movements that made Marsh's eyes keep on him. Wickham seemed to be holding a white envelope and was leaving the flat with it. Marsh watched him as he exited the building and went to the mailbox right outside in the front. He didn't deposit it there and instead he walked on.
Marsh quickly went to follow him and tried to keep up as Wickham was pacing quickly through the streets. He would stop every once and a while as he made his way a few blocks and then when seeing a mail box across a street, made his way and delivered the letter.
Marsh made a mental note to remember the box and left to follow Wickham who lead him back to the flat but not after stopping by on the way to pick up some cigarettes, cheap beer, and take out.
When Marsh got back to his hiding spot, he was welcomed by Darcy along with Brandson, who was scouting out the well stocked fridge Marsh set up, who was there before the others.
‘Where have you come from?' Darcy asked him.
‘Sir, I just got back from following Wickham running an errand if you will. He dropped a letter off at a mailbox about 14 blocks from here and then got some food and drinks to take back just now.'
‘Brandson I need that letter.' Darcy stated as he watched Brandson sipping on a Pepsi.
‘That's wonderful Darcy and I agree that it probably is important, but you can't just break into the mailbox. That's a huge no-no.'
‘It could be serious...and dangerous. At least to see who the sender is.'
Brandson shook his head.
Will let his head down and put his hands on his hips while trying to figure out his next move. A feeling crept up inside him.
‘Fine. Let it go. I think I know where it's going anyways.' Darcy said and then sat down on the sofa.
Within ten minutes he was asleep.
Panting from the steady pace of the run and squinting to keep the sun out of her eyes, Lizzy held a tight rein on Jack and tried to get Will off her mind. It had been five days since she last heard from him. It was bothering her and she was beginning to get frustrated at the lack of attention from him. Even Charles wasn't hearing from him. It wasn't unusual according to Charles to not hear from Darcy for a few days and so he thought nothing of it. But to Lizzy it was harder. She knew she was being silly, and therefore found herself putting him to the side in her mind while doing her favorite hobbies, but still failing.
She cursed under her breath for her silliness and as she rounded the corner to the apartment, she shook her head and petted Jack as they slowed down for a cool down. As she walked slowly around the parking lot she noticed Charles's car parked in his usual spot. Now that his ribs were healed, he was back to driving, which made him an even more frequent vistor.
When Lizzy woke up, the sun was shining brightly through her window and it was still early yet. However, a newfound energy was surging through her and she was determined not to waste a golden opportunity like this in enjoying the peace and quiet of the neighborhood with a good run. Jack was more than willing, in fact he was eager to get out and stretch his little but strong limbs.
When Lizzy finished cooling down, she went up to the apartment and let Jack loose to greet Jane and Charles.
‘Oh Lizzy! We were wondering if you would like to come with us to a movie today.'
Lizzy, slightly out of breath, declined as she shook her head.
‘Not today Jane. Sorry Charles, but I just feel like hanging around home. Besides I have some schoolwork to get done. I'm almost done for the semester.'
‘Are you taking more classes this summer?' Charles asked while Jane tried to think of a way to get Lizzy to join them.
‘No. I need a break. Work is picking up and there are other things I want to do right now. Besides, I have my part in the wedding to prepare for.'
‘Are you sure you don't want to join us? I mean...it might do you some good to get out.' Jane persisted.
‘Really I'll be fine. You two go have fun and when you're ready for dinner, let me know, unless you two have plans?' Lizzy grinned.
‘No no plans for dinner except having it with you. Okay then Jane, let's get going. I have a few things I want to get done before the movie. See you Lizzy.' Charles said as he squeezed her arm and move past her to the door. Jane followed and smiled empathically at her sister and then left.
Lizzy let out a sigh and then looked at Jack who was drinking out of his water bowl.
She then made her way to get a drink, petted Jack some more and then stood by the fridge thinking about Will.
Her thoughts were interrupted by Jack who barked at her and wagged his tail, trying to get her attention to pet him. After a few strokes down his furry back and a few scratches behind his favorite spot, his right ear, Lizzy announced for shower.
‘All right all right...time for a shower!' she said as she put her glass down and went towards the bathroom.
Will was right. The letter was for Georgie. But it was sent to Pemberley instead of her flat at school. This made Will relax a bit more but was still on guard. It had been five days since the letter was sent and nothing was happening. But when Mrs. Reynolds called him per his instructions, he wasn't very surprised to hear the letter address to Georgie. Mrs. Reynolds made sure it was sent promptly to him that same day and when received, Will called Georgie to obtain consent, although he knew he didn't need it, but Brandson was insistent.
The letter was sitting in front of him and he was cautious before opening it. He wasn't sure what would be in there. It wasn't packed with anything. It seemed only to hold a letter. But that guarded Will all the more. Anything could be contained. Therefore Brandson pulled some strings to have the letter examed for anything potentially harmful.
With the letter sent out and Brandson gone with it, Will was left in his room to his thoughts. He was tired of being cooped up in his hotel room and with no one around. He wanted to be home. He wanted to be with Lizzy and his friends. He missed them...especially her. When thoughts of her evaded his mind, he shook his head and went to his phone.
He dialed her number but got no answer and instead left a voicemail.
He then dialed Charles's number and was happy to hear his voice on the other line.
‘Darcy! Glad to hear from you. It's been a few days. How are things going in London?'
‘They're progressing, slowly, but progressing. How are things there?'
‘Wonderful. Jane and I saw a movie today and then went to the park for a couple of hours and now you are catching us having dinner with Lizzy. We're at the Olive Garden. One of Jane's favorites.'
‘I see. Wish I could be there. Is everyone well?'
‘Oh fine...just fine. After this we were thinking about going to the pub and seeing who's around. Too bad you're not here. We miss you.'
‘Trust me Charles, I wish I was there instead of being here. Cooped up in a hotel room for the past few weeks and still many more I'm sure.'
‘Really Darce? You think you're going to be there much longer?'
‘I don't know. I've gotten some information but not enough to get this case wrapped up. But I got a somewhere today. I'm having the information processed right now. Hopefully this will get me closer.'
‘I hope so. Well would you like to talk to Lizzy? She just got back from the ladies.' Charles said with a grin.
‘I'd love to Charles.'
After a few moments of waiting and hearing an inquiry as to it was, her angelic voice came onto the line.
‘Will?'
‘Lizzy. How are you my love?' He said and as he said her name it sounded as though all his worries, his pain, and his tension was immediately gone. Lizzy heard it too and felt a longing for him. To comfort and console him.
‘How's London?'
‘Terrible without you. I wish I wasn't here. But I have to be and it's for the right thing. I can't leave just yet. I'm sorry I haven't been in contact this past week. I've been so determined and concentrating on this case that I, well I'm sorry.'
‘Don't apologize. I was frustrated, but when Charles told me that you can do that at points when you're stressed or extremely busy, I tried to understand. I'm glad you called though. I was more worried than upset.'
‘Well no need to worry too much. Things are going along as I told Charles, but I wish they could move faster. Anyways. Having a good time with the lovebirds?'
Lizzy laughed a bit and watched Jane and Charles snuggling up one another and feeding each other bits of their food.
‘Wonderful time, although I wish I could be doing what they're doing right now with you.'
‘Oh really...and what would that be?'
‘Hmm...' Lizzy blushed and smiled as Jane and Charles continued with their scene.
‘I see. Well I should get Wickham to hurry up so I can come home.'
‘Wickham?' Lizzy asked puzzled.
Will didn't mean to let it slip. It wasn't that he didn't want to tell her, but not at this point. He rather wait until he return and he didn't want her worrying. Charles was kept in a confined loop that meant little to no information.
‘Tell me Lizzy,' Will started in attempts to changing the subject,' are you as lonely as I? I mean...without me there...with you.'
His voice was stammering at first but then at the end of it he was resolute. Lizzy's heart started to beat faster and she could feel her face blush fiercely. It took a moment for Lizzy to find her voice and when she did her tone was soothing, wanting, and low.
‘Yes Will. In fact, I am missing you more than I thought I would have. I miss you very much.' She ended slowly.
This brought a smile to Will's face as he felt his own heart pound heavily within him.
‘Lizzy...I-‘ He was so determined to be with her. But at that moment he was interrupted by Brandson bounding into his room.
‘Will! Come quick! You won't believe our fate my friend.'
Will's brow furrowed and he was rendered speechless. It must be about Wickham, a break in the case perhaps? Will was not welcome to the intrusion, but somehow he felt he would be in time.
‘Lizzy I'm sorry. It seems I must be going urgently now. My lawyer needs to speak to me. I'll call you later tonight okay?'
Lizzy was holding onto that moment before he was taken away and let out a deep sigh.
‘Yes go go. I don't want to hold you back. Call me whenever you get the chance. Good Night Will.'
‘Good Night Love.'
Lizzy handed Charles his phone and slightly smiled as she did so. Their food came a few moments after and before Charles could ask Lizzy anything from the conversation.
After the server left their table, Charles pulled out his fork and while looking preoccupied with his food, as he saw Lizzy actually was when he looked up from his plate, he ventured a query.
‘So Lizzy. What did Will have to say? Any hopes of returning earlier than he led me to believe? Of course his coming home wouldn't be for my benefit although I miss my friend greatly.'
Lizzy stab her pasta with her fork in determination not to blush, but is was hopeless. She slowly brought her gaze up with her eyes bright and gave a knowing smile to Jane as she looked as though she didn't know Charles's meaning.
Charles knew full well what he was insinuating and waited for her reply with pursed lips to stop a smile from forming.
‘He didn't say when he was to return and for any reason that he would. He said that he had to go since his lawyer came in to talk with him.' Lizzy's smile faded and Charles tried to get information rather than push on her newfounded pain of him not there.
‘Lizzy? I heard you say Wickham? What was that about?' Charles inquired curiously.
Lizzy shook her head.
‘I haven't a clue. He only said that he should get Wickham to hurry up soon so he could come home.'
Charles slightly paled but soon recovered for Lizzy or Jane not to see.
‘Ahh...well I'm sure he will be fine and that he will be back sooner than we think. That's Darcy for you. Always full of surprises.'
Lizzy paused and turned to Jane who looked curiously concerned at her sister for the turn of conversation. Lizzy thought about what she knew and then thought about what she didn't know. She decided to stick with what she knew and felt confident in his return home to be the opposite of Charles prediction.
Will walked to Brandson's room puzzled as to what the new break was but eager to hoping it was good news.
‘What is it? What has been discovered? Is he moving? Has he done something?'
‘You won't guess. It's quite...well...hold on.'
Brandson was keen on keep his triumph to himself for a bit longer steeling it away from Will. But as soon as his friend and client become irritated, he relented.
‘Marsh just called. Seems that Wickham and his goonies were in a bit of a brawl at the flat. One of them shot the other and the other fled who wasn't in the fight at all. The twerp who shot the one offending him was Jorge Jenkins. Bobby fled but the police caught him since Marsh had them called by that time.'
He waited to see if Will caught on. He searched his face and knew Will to be quick which was definitely the case here.
Will's eyes opened wide and then quickly covered his surprise as he peered at Brandson.
‘Is he dead?'
‘Ahh...you don't think it would have been that easy do you? No he's not dead. But he is in police custody. All three of them! Wickham is being taking to Barnes Hospital. ‘
Will's mind was overflowing. He could not believe how happy, nay, pleased he was to hear that Wickham was in custody along with the other two. But before Will could say anything, he knew he had work to do.
Will entered the sterile hospital with a grim face hiding his actual feelings of triumph that Wickham was actually in custody and wouldn't be going anywhere for a while. He went up to the room number Brandson gave him and remembered to check himself.
He knocked at the door and then entered finding Wickham in a sad state of tubing, monitors, and a sour face.
‘Well well...if it isn't the hero? Come to save the day have you?'
Darcy didn't respond. Instead he stood in front of him for a moment and then took a seat on the opposite side of the fairly sized private room.
‘What are you here for anyways? Come to tell me my days are numbered? To tell me never to touch your sister again...even though...she didn't say no that last ti---‘ Wickham wasn't able to finish his sentence with Will's vice grip on his neck.
‘Jorge Jenkins may have had the pleasure to shoot you, but I can have the better pleasure to kill you if you don't shut up and listen!' Will seethed and hissed low into Wickham's ear. He pulled back and saw the purple face of Wickham look small and meaningless. He then let go and took a calm breath while listening to Wickham fight to breath again.
‘I ought to have you charged for that! You can't come in here thinking you can do anything to me. I'm protected!'
‘You aren't anything of the sort. You are being held against your will here. You are under arrest for escaping prison for heaven's sake! You won't get away from anyone now.'
Will then started to pace about the room in anger.
Wickham tried to get comfortable but it was of no use. He hated having William Darcy of all people in his presence
.
‘What makes you think that you can barge in here and demand anything from me? I'm in a hospital bed for crying out loud. I've been shot!'
Darcy rolled his eyes and snickered.
‘You really expect me to have any sympathy for you? You who are not worth mentioning to anyone? Who can't even do something for someone else unless in the name of your own benefit? I really think you ought to think things through. You have the time now to do so. You won't see daylight as a free man ever again.'
Wickham was put off at hearing this and slyly smiled.
‘You know...as much as this may give you great pleasure to abuse me this way...I must say that it was worth it. In offending you through Georgiana and her wild behavior with me. It was such fun Darcy. I can't think of a better time I had then hearing her call out my name when we...well...you know how mother nature works Darce.'
Will was determined not to let his anger rage again, though the pain he was feeling at the words George spat out quickly boiled to rage and he stopped in his place and turned to Wickham.
‘George, I know what you're doing. You won't get away with it. Georgie is safe from you. You may of caught her in Kenya with your simple scare tactic, but you will never harm her again. Your lies of passion with my sister are regretfully for you your own mistake. If my sister truly did care for you, you would of won and would not be here.' Will paused to see how Wickham reacted. He did just as he thought.
Wickham paled and his face turned resentful. When he didn't say anything but look out the small window in the room, Will permitted on.
‘You're schemes are pale to my truth and my existence in knowing you will never have the glory of my family, my fortune, or my life. Your jealousy and anger are all for nothing. I will see to it that you are locked away for life if not worse. You know that you don't stand a chance anymore.'
Wickham was quick to turn his head and stare with venom into Darcy's eyes.
‘You're quick to judge Darcy! But I believe that I have won. Maybe not your money or the chance of throwing down your fame and pride, but I have the knowledge that wherever your most beloved sister goes she will be tainted with the image of me, with the mere wonder of if every other guy will turn out just like me. I may not of won her, but I know that I will always be in her thoughts. She has lost the trust of men and that makes her weak! Weaker than you could ever protect!'
Darcy rung his hands behind his back trying not to strangle Wickham again.
Suddenly the image of Lizzy entered his mind, instantly calming him.
Her bright, expressing eyes beaming at him and her beautiful smile encouraging him. He took a deep breath and then the image of Georgiana happy and never in pain closed his thoughts and he took a deep breath.
He looked straight at Wickham and walked to his side. Will noticed handcuffs linked to his hand and to a solid post on the wall. He then observed that Wickham slightly coiled as Will drew near him. Will looked into his eyes with a calming rage and spoke in low even tones. His teeth gritted against each other and his face turned red.
‘I'm not here to hear you go on about you're empty dreams of ruining the happiness of the people I love. If you knew what real love was you would not be so quick to say the things you say. I came here to tell you that you have lost, that I will not be at your trial and that you are no longer apart of any lives that I am in contact with. I wish you nothing but what you deserve and I hope you feel it extremely. I should never see you or hear of you or from you again. I am confident I never will. And should I...I will not be careful in how I act so long as you are dead in the end.'
Wickham swallowed hard and was white as the sheets he laid upon.
Will slowly stepped away and took one good look at the lowlife that lay in the bed, wounded.
‘Yes you may be right about one thing George,' Will said as he went to leave the room. Wickham only turned his face to him with no words to say and only a deep fear brightly shining in his eyes.
‘I might not be able to protect Georgie from any other man, but let it be known that when a real man actually enters her life, I know that he will also be there to protect her.'
And Darcy left.
After Will left the hospital, he immediately called Georgie to relay the good news.
‘Oh Will are you serious?! We are done from him for good?'
‘Yes my love we are. I know that Brandson is going to make sure this is a sealed deal and that nothing will ever prevent what's deserved of him. How is school going?'
‘I can't talk about school right now! I'm too...relieved and just...happy it's finally over.'
‘Yes it is. I want you to remember that. No one will ever harm you again my love.'
‘Thank you Will. For everything you have done to keep me safe and for being there for me.'
‘I would do it over and over so to keep you protected. Now let us think of happier times ahead. I don't want to think of Wickham anymore.'
Georgie giggled but reassured her brother that she would be and was thinking of better things.
‘I refuse to let him get to Will. Not anymore at least. I'm just happy he's caught.'
‘As am I.'
‘Are you going back to America then? To Virginia?'
‘I will yeah. I'm leaving later this week. I want to ensue that this is final and then I will be on my way.'
‘How about we meet for lunch at my place then on Wednesday?'
‘Sounds good sweetie.'
After he hung up with Georgie he felt himself soaking in relief of the whole ordeal. He was finally done with him.
He was able to live his life again. Not that he hadn't but since the recent turn of events, he wasn't able to enjoy it. So much had happened to him since February.
He met Lizzy, broke up with Caroline, Wickham came back, the car accident, catching Wickham, the wedding at Pemberley he was planning for his friends...but there was one more thing that happened.
Something more dear to him than anything could ever amount to. Something that was a life altering event. A moment in the past couple months that just hit him with joy and warmth. His falling in love with Lizzy.
It was true. He was falling in love with her. He was falling more in love with her each day even when they weren't together. As soon as he thought of his love for her, he yearned for her. His heart was happily aching for her to be with him. Near him.
Now was the time he could be with her, without unwanted interruptions. Without worrying about protecting his sister from so far away, although he was still rather protective of her. He was able to let his guard down a bit.
He wanted more than anything to be by her side. He missed her laugh and her sweet smell, her vivacious eyes and her singsong voice. He wanted to hear her voice that instant.
However, it was too late to call her but he would talk to her soon enough and better still he would see her when he got home.
