This really highlights how much Jane has changed from the character we know from P&P. Darcy famously says that "the serenity of your sister’s countenance and air was such as might have given the most acute observer a conviction that, however amiable her temper, her heart was not likely to be easily touched." Jane as you portray her still has that serenity--remarkably, considering she has lost her husband and is living under threat--but she is more mature now and is prepared to meet frankness with frankness.
